We got visited by a whole bunch of deer this morning!
This is some of them…

We had 7 in total. I was able to get some video.

Continue readingSo yesterday was a pretty full day! Before I get into it all, though, I wanted to share these pictures, taken on our way home yesterday.

I’m always thrilled to see the bison this close to the road. Such beautiful creatures!

They are quite well insulated from the recent cold…

…and quite enjoying themselves; earlier, we had seen some of the littler ones running and jumping around in the snow. Even though these would be the ones born last year, and not quite their adult size, they’re still massive enough that seeing them running and jumping is an amazing thing!

The cold snap finally broke today!
Though we woke to temperatures of -31C and wind chills reaching beyond -40C, by the time I got outside to do my rounds, it was a balmy -26C, with no wind chill.
We are supposed to continue to warm up over the next couple of days, with more snow on Monday and Tuesday. Since I have to go into town on Monday, then pick up the snow blower on Tuesday, today was the day to clear enough of the driveway that I could get out of the garage without getting stuck.
Continue readingIt seems that every morning, when I check the weather, the cold snap keeps getting pushed further and further into the upcoming days. We should have been in the low -20s and high minus teens by now, but instead I woke up to -31C with a wind chill of -42C, and the cold is now supposed to continue through Monday. Last Monday, it was supposed to extend until today, then start warming up.
Ugh.
Continue readingBeep Beep really likes that platform feeder.

Definitely the one we see up there the most often (the next photo is taken on a different day).

One day, she had company!

Rolando Moon decided to join her. Which was a bit of a surprise, since Rolando Moon is usually doesn’t like being that close with the other cats.
Beep Beep is judging me. And you. And the world!
Since switching up rooms, I have come to appreciate the view in my new office space. I’ve got my desk against the north wall, which means I can see out the window with my peripheral vision.
Turns out, it’s pretty active out there!
Every now and then, some motion catches my eye, and I look up to see a cat – or several of them – making their way through the trees, to and from the roof, or just… sitting there.
Continue readingMy older daughter took care of feeding the critters this morning, so it was an hour or so before I headed out myself.
By then, the outside water bowl was already mostly frozen.

When I first got there, Beep Beep was sitting with her front paws in the bowl, on the ice.

My phone distracted her. :-D
Then I used the ice scraper to break up the surface of the ice in the water bowl. Next thing I knew, there were three cats drinking out of it!
One of my usual morning rounds had been to pick up all the twigs and branches in the yard that had fallen overnight. Once the snow got deep, I left the smaller stuff for spring. After yesterday’s winds, however, I went around and picked up some of the larger branches that had come down.
Trudging through unbroken snow is much more difficult than it looks. :-D
