Brined Turkey with bacon

I was interrupted while making our Thanksgiving dinner today. I got a call from home care, telling me that there had been a sick call, and no one would be able to do the meal assist with my mother.  I did confirm that she would still be getting her bed time assist, then said that I could go over to do the meal assist.  So I turned all over to the girls to finish, and headed out to help out my mother.

Everything was ready by the time I got back, so we went straight to setting up for dinner.  I half carved the turkey before I realized I forgot to take a photo! :-D  So here is half of our bacon covered, brined turkey! Continue reading

Happy Thanksgiving!

It’s Thanksgiving Weekend, here in Canada, and our turkey is ready for the oven. :-)

Though Thanksgiving is officially tomorrow, we decided to have a quiet family dinner today.  A large family dinner is being planned for later in the month.

The turkey was brined overnight, rubbed with lemon halves (which were then tucked into the cavity) and covered with bacon.

A trick I learned from my late mother-in-law. :-D

And Now for Something Completely Different

So based on the amount of food that’s been disappearing overnight, we’ve been fairly sure that we had “other” visitors apart from the cats. As I was getting ready to go and cuddle with them, I took a quick look outside and thought better of it…

I have to admit that the only thing that’s keeping me from going out there and trying to pet it, is common sense.

Visiting kits and cats

While getting photos of the birds, I saw Jim at the base of the planter and started taking pictures of him, as well.

Then The Outsider came through from the other side and posed!

It looks like The Outsider has moved right in with our cats.  It seems a bit odd that a lone kitten would show up like this.  It may be from a neighboring farm, but in that case, I would expect it to go home and only show up once in a while.  Alternatively, he may have been abandoned; something that still happens, unfortunately.

Whatever the reason, we are happy to have him, and so are the other kittens!

Then we have our other visitors.  Like this guy.

It seems to now be a pretty sure thing that this is “dad cat”, that the girls would sometimes see while raking the yard.  We’d never really seen his face before, so no one recognized him when he showed up in the sun room a while back.  He’s coming closer to the house more often, and not just to quickly grab some food, and we’ve been able to get a better look at him and his rather distinctive face markings!

There is a grey cat that also comes around.  The grey and Dad Cat got into a big and nasty fight under our living room window a few days back.

I would not be surprised if we find ourselves with more kittens in the not too distant future. :-/

Good news, Bad news…

So the good news is that most of the kittens are comfortable enough with me at this point that they will sit there and eat while I’m still rummaging around; they were pretty much exactly like this while I was opening up a new bag of food for them.

… the bad news is that they seem to now treat the sunroom as their own very large personal thump dump area. I found no less than three landmines this morning.

Heeerre birdie birdie

So it looks like corvo has discover that hunting for Birds is a fair bit easier right after I feed them. This is the second or third time now that he’s taken up residence on the bird feeder and tried to take swipes at whatever birds come around.

And they do come around, flaring at him and otherwise showing there displeasure at his taking over their Roost.

… Funny as hell.
