I finally got through to my mother. While we were talking on the phone, it started to crackle loudly. We had to cut the call short.
Now it’s back to “home line busy.”
*sigh*
I don’t know why I’m so hesitant to call the phone company. I just am really loathing the idea. I guess there’s always this thought in the back of my head that they’ll decide it’s a customer problem, and we’ll end up with a massive repair bill. Given how things have been for the last couple of years, that would not surprise me at all.
The Re-Farmer

Sounds to me based on the previous post that the phone itself has a short in it. DO you have a second one that you could swap out and use as a test / replacement?

We used to have a corded phone. Stopped using it long ago, when we discovered a cat pissed on it. I thought we had another one, but I thing it went into storage. I can’t find it.

I’d get the cheapest junk phone Walmart has as a test device. Also check if the current one is back in hold mode again, lol

Oh, I feel ya on being afraid of a bill – esp since I’m still gighting to get my $150 back!
My phones have acted like that when water got into the connections at the telephone pole.

That’s sort of why we thought the cats may have sprayed on a jack, but the only two unused ones thar could have happened to are no longer hooked up at the hub, so that rules that out.
I went into the storage house and found two phones. One is a rotary dial. I remember the other one, which was in use when we moved in, made noises. We ended up buying the cordless set we have now. I’ll test the corded phones later. If they work, thar means it’s the base on our cordless set. If they don’t, the problem is somewhere in the line itself.
