Some cuteness, and an unplanned outing

First, the cuteness! I came into the sun room and spotted this ball of adorableness.

I sometimes like to add some kibble onto the feed bag stuffed with packing material they like to use as a bed. They have a proper bowl, but they can’t all fit around it. Especially when some of the adults decide to eat from it, too!

The kibble bin was running low. We bought four 9kg and two 11.6kg bags of kibble during our last Costco trip. The kibble bin for the inside cats just got refills, which left the equivalent of less than a bag for the outside cats.

All that, and it’s only July 11!

So I made the trip to the nearest Walmart, at the smaller, nearer city, to pick up more. I ended up buying their last three 11kg bags, then two more 9kg bags.

All the bags were the same price. ๐Ÿค”

Of course, I took advantage of the outing and got a few more things we needed. A smaller case of wet cat food for the cats in my room and the kittens – I’m now seeing other kittens eating the wet cat food, too! The replacement coupling for the hose I needed. That sort of thing. But I completely forgot to look at shoes! I need a pair of work shoes that are not boots. ๐Ÿ˜

Gas prices I saw were pretty high. Passing through the town my mother lives in, they’re at 158.9ยข/L, and in the city it was 157.9ยข/L. I took a chance and took a different route home, in hopes the prices were still lower in the town we usually go to. Sure enough, the prices are still 149.9ยข/L I don’t know why this one town has prices that are so much lower than elsewhere, but I’m not about to complain!

One thing I did before heading out was leave a message at the garage, asking if they’d had a chance to assess what’s going on with our van, yet. It was something they were going to do in between other scheduled jobs. Still no word, though. I hope I hear something soon! As much as I appreciate being able to use my mother’s car – and the working air conditioning! – I much prefer driving the van. Especially when we need to get things like 5 or 6 big bags of cat food!

Of course, it’s entirely possible that noise I was hearing in the back will require more expensive repairs, and we’ll have to decide if it’s worth fixing at all.

Just a few more months of using my new credit card and paying it off every month, and my credit rating should be good enough to apply for financing on a newer van, with an interest rate and payments we can afford.

It’s taking a while, but we’re getting there!

It all comes down to the weather

Well, my plans for the day changed again.

We’ve got high winds today, with an expected high of 29C/84F. I wanted to get the transplants out, though.

With the wind direction, I was able to use the picnic table under the old market tent by the fire pit. They won’t get full sun, but with the expected heat, that’s quite all right. They will still get some wind, which is good for them, but not enough to send them flying across the yard.

The next while is expected to continue with high temperatures, with high winds and a possible thunderstorm tomorrow, though only one of my weather apps is predicting that. Overnight temperatures are also expected to be quite warm.

I decided today was a day to do some direct sowing, while also raking up some of the grass clippings to lay down some much needed mulch. If we’re going to be getting thunderstorms, I want the soil protected as much as possible. If we don’t get the thunderstorms, I want the soil well mulched to keep it moist, and from getting too hot!

I set up the extra phone to take time lapse video, so that will be put together for another post. With the peas, I planted the free Hedou Tiny bok choy from Bakers Creek and Jebousek lettuce I got for free from Heritage Harvest. As the peas grow up the chain link fence, they will shade and shelter the lettuce and bok choy. Then I prepped and planted the Tom Thumb popcorn.

I don’t know if I’ll have the energy to get back out there again today, but I’d really like to transplant the Black Beauty and Indigo Blue Chocolate tomatoes. They are getting quite large, and I’d rather transplant them than pot them up again. That and it would mean a fewer trays to take in and out every day! As it is, there were some Spoon tomatoes that didn’t make it, and removing the pots meant I could combine 3 trays into 2, with some judicious rearranging. When I transplant the bigger tomatoes, I want to transplant some of the onions in with them, too. The Black Beauty tomatoes are determinate, but the Indigo Blue Chocolate are indeterminate, so I need to consider the different types of support they will need. I also need to resist transplanting all of them, if I start running out of space. We had very good germination rates and few losses, and it’s the paste tomatoes that I want to have a lot of. I can always give away the extras! It’s the same for the remaining peppers. We have a 100% germination rate on all but one variety, and of that one variety, there’s only one peat pellet didn’t germinate – and I only planted one seed per pellet!

With the way things are looking, we may have to start doing outside work in the morning and late evening. The hottest part of the day tends to be around 3pm, but stays hot until about 6 or 7.

In my youth, I wasn’t bothered by the heat the way I am now. Makes it harder to get things done!

Changes in plans, and so many kitties!

What a crowd while feeding the yard cats this morning!

There’s a bunch of them that really prefer having breakfast on the roof! ๐Ÿ˜

I counted 29 of them this morning! Unfortunately, I found the ramp board into the cats’ house was knocked down. I fixed it, but I think the bitty baby ended up spending the night under the cat house instead of in it. You can just see his head poking out near the counterweight, where I leave some kibble. Quite a few of the smaller kittens prefer to be under there.

Last night, my husband let me know that a couple of my orders were in at the post office, so once I finished my morning rounds, I headed out. One of the packages was the lysine powder!

I’ve got two of these, so they should last a while. Depending on how things work, I might order these every month or two. They came in almost a week early, so we still have tablets left, too. I think I’ll switch to the powder right away, though. I think it’ll coat the kibble better than what I get after using a mortar and pestle on the tablets. I’ll test it out when we do their evening feeding. I really hope this stuff works. Even the bitty baby is starting to get gooby eyes. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

A couple of days ago, I’d asked my mother if she needed any help with errands today. Especially for a grocery trip. She didn’t think so, but was supposed to call yesterday to confirm. She didn’t, but I did get a call this morning, telling me that she was good and didn’t need anything.

Several hours later, she called back. Was I still available? She figured we might get snow soon, and decided it was a good idea to stock up.

I think she got the flier in the mail and saw some good sales, which made her think of it, too.

Which as no problem at all. I had just finished lunch and hadn’t started anything outside yet, so nothing was interrupted. With having me available to help carry things, and her car to bring them home, she stocked up quite a bit. It’s just for herself, so she doesn’t really need much. Plus, we got to visit for a bit, and neither of us were in any hurry!

Once I got home, I had an adorable sight greeting me. A whole pile of kittens mashed into the cat bed by the east facing window of the cat shelter. I took a peek in the south facing window, and there were even more of them!

I’m not sure if there are 7 or 8 in here. The picture I took of the kittens in the other window had too many reflections on the plexiglass to see well, but I think there was another 4 or 5 on that bed.

You can see the bitty baby right by the window above, next to Colin. Most of the white and grey cats are hard to tell apart, but Colin (Mochrie) has a distinctive “hairline” on his forehead. He’s also the only one of the grey and whites that is mostly socialized. There is one other that we can sometimes, almost, sortof, pet, but that’s it!

I think we need more cat beds for inside their shelter. ๐Ÿ˜„

Pretty faces, and most of a day gone

Just look at who I got to say hello to, this morning!

The beautiful Nosencrantz let me pet her, but wasn’t too happy about me coming any closer, so I let her be.

While this handsome gentleman (yes, we have been able to confirm Agnoos is male – and I may as well spell his name phonetically! LOL) was the opposite. He started off stand-offish, letting me pet him, but moving away, letting me pet, moving away… Then I straightened up and was about to move, then I felt a cat winding around my legs. Yup! Agnoos actually came over for more pets, and I was even able to pick him up and cuddle him!!! Yay!!!

I had a bit of a change in plan today. I had called my mother last night to see if she needed any help with grocery shopping. She said no, but then mentioned the heat wasn’t turning on at her place, and it was very cold. She had just been talking to my brother and he had said something to her about it, for me to check. She couldn’t repeat what he had said, and I couldn’t figure out her paraphrase. But it wasn’t a big deal, she insisted. I didn’t have to come over. She would wait until my brother came out to check it. *sigh* It was a short call, as her program was about to start, so I called my brother immediately after I got off the phone with her. It turned out he wanted me to check the breakers. Which I could never have been able to figure out from what my mom had said! I mentioned her saying she would wait for him to check it, which just left us shaking our heads. Why make him drive almost 2 hours after work, when I’m less than half an hour away and can do the same thing?

So this morning, I did a short version of my rounds, then called my mother up about coming over. It turned out she’d had a sleepless night, so she asked me to come in the afternoon. That gave me enough time to finish my rounds and grab a quick lunch, then I headed over.

The breakers were fine. She though she’d turned her thermostats up to 25C, but it was only at 20C, and wasn’t turning on. So I turned them up. Then, since she knew I would be coming this afternoon, she asked if I could help her with grocery shopping.

I had used her car, just in case that would happen!

So we did that, but as I was folding up her walker in and out of the car, I noticed the seat was falling off. Once back at her place and the groceries were put away, I checked it out. The seat is attached to the frame with a pair of loops, so it’s like a hinge. I could see both screws were getting loose, but one was falling out completely. I flipped it around to look at the other side, and discovered that both loops were already missing their screws on the other side!

Of course, these aren’t ordinary screws. For starters, they needed a hex key to tighten them, which I didn’t have, but I did have a screwdriver with Robinsons tips (square tips: it’s a Canadian thing), which worked well enough.

While I was working on that, my mother made tea, so of course, I had to stay for a visit. ;-) I don’t mind, since I know she is lonely will all the social activities still banned in her building. Still, by the time I was leaving, I had to rush to get to the post office before it closed, to pick up a package.

Oh, and I remembered to turn her thermostats down before I left. When we got back from grocery shopping, the apartment was way too warm, so I turned it down just a few degrees. Hopefully, she will be happy with that!

By the time I got home, I noticed that, while we have a nice, warm and sunny day, the wind has picked up a lot. I had intended to be working outside today, but have missed the best hours for the work. Ah, well. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get some of it done before it starts getting too dark, and the weather holds over the next while. In fact, now that I’ve finished grabbing a quick supper, I’ll be heading out now!

So much work to go, so few daylight hours to do it in!
