Morning Rays

I visited the beach after dropping my daughter off at work today.  It was so beautiful!

After the storms last night, the lake is very calm this morning.

20180804.beach.sunrays.2

Though I am far from a morning person, I enjoy driving my daughter for her early shifts and being able to visit the beach this early.  I hung around, taking photos, playing Pokemon Go, and looking for interesting rocks, for about half an hour.  By 8:30 a.m., the beach was already getting crowded.  There were even people playing beach volleyball!  Well, it’s Saturday on a long weekend, so I guess that’s to be expected.  Especially a festival weekend.  There’s an annual festival held on the first weekend of August in town that has been going on for the last 80+ years here.  I remember going to it as a child and teen, and it seemed to get smaller and smaller every year.  By the time I moved away, I honestly wondered how much longer it would continue.  Trends changed over the years, though, the the town wisely took advantage of them, and incorporated a viking village with re-enactors (turns out there’s a whole community of re-enactors that travel from festival to festival across Canada), complete with mock battles.  It’s become quite huge.

Which means we’ll be avoiding it, as much as possible! LOL

As early as it still was, I headed home faster than usual because of the growing crowds, where I found another ray of sunshine waiting for me.

Morning at the beach

A couple of photos of the lake, taken this morning.

20180728.beach120180728.beach2

The water was so still this morning!

While it’s usually quiet in the mornings, there isn’t going to be any swimming for beach goers for a while.  Several beaches at this area of the lake are now closed.  It seems some pipe got damaged, resulting in untreated sewage draining into the lake.  From what I’ve read, the water tests were still testing safe, but the province closed some beaches to be on the safe side.

This is unusual only in regards to the cause.  The usual reason for beach closures are high algae levels, which has been an ongoing problem on the lake for decades, or high e. coli levels from bird poop.

And that, kids, is why we use chlorine in pools! ;-)

Windy Beach

One of the bonuses of dropping my daughter off at work for an early shift is taking a quick stop at the beach before heading home.

It was very windy off the lake today, making for some awesome waves!

20180720.beach1

As I parked, I could see a guy struggling through the waves near the water line, carrying an oar and dragging what I at first thought was a kayak.

20180720.beach2

Passing him on the sand a few minutes later, as he fought the wind to put it on its wheeled carrier, I saw it looked more like a surf board.  So I’m guessing it was a paddle board.

20180720.beach3

The combination of the lake’s size and how shallow it is, makes it one of the more dangerous lakes to sail on in rough weather.  Today wasn’t too bad for boats, but I would not have dared go out there on a paddle board in these conditions!

It sure is beautiful, though.

Beach Views and Power

After dropping my daughter off at work this morning, I went by the beach and took a bit of a walk.

20180714.beach.sun

I was able to catch a whole lot of seagulls, just as they were taking off!

This morning, our power was hooked up to the garage and barn.  Yay!

20180714.pole.bottom

In order to detach the existing line from the old pole, the old pole had to be pushed down.

Despite being broken already, it was not easy to do!  That core was still hanging on pretty hard.

20180714.pole.top

That platform that broke off the top of the pole once held a bird house.  My late brother built the birdhouse, then scrambled up the pole to install it, many years ago.  We didn’t have a ladder tall enough to reach all the way, so he climbed the pole itself for the top few feet – somehow bringing the bird house and the tools he needed at the same time!

The new pole is even taller, so no normal vehicle going under there will ever get caught!  And there’s almost no sag in the middle at all, either.

Then the power got hooked up to the barn, which meant new line from the main pole to a secondary pole, then to the barn.

So happy it’s finally done!

Unfortunately, there seems to have been an unexpected victim of the power being shut off twice while the work was done.

My husband’s CPAP no longer works.

It wasn’t on while the work was being done, but there is still power going to it.  Perhaps a fuse got blown?  No matter.  It’s dead.  And he just got replacement hose, nose piece and filters for it!

Thankfully, now that my husband is sleeping on a hospital bed, he can adjust it to sleep in an upright position; he should be able to breath that way until we can replace the CPAP.  We do have insurance that covers most of the cost, but we’d have to buy it first, then send in a receipt.  So that will have to wait a couple of weeks!

*sigh*

Views

While driving my daughter to work this morning, we saw some pretty incredible views.

Right now, a couple of flax fields we pass are in bloom.

20180712.flax

My daughter was able to get some photos of this one out her window for me.  The canola fields are in full bloom right now, too.  So we are seeing this amazing purpley-blue in the flax field, framed by brilliant yellow.  There’s a wheat field that’s starting to turn from green to gold, and other crops in differing shades of green that we pass along the way, broken up by groups of trees sheltering farm yards or planted as shelter belts.  So gorgeous!

After dropping my daughter off, I parked by the lake for a bit, got a bit of Pokemon Go in while also enjoying the view.

20180712.beach

It’s tourist season right now, so later in the day and on weekends, things get very crowded on this beach. This early in the morning on a weekday, there were very few people out, so it was quiet and peaceful.

Where we lived before moving here, we had some pretty impressive views over a river valley, even though we were downtown.  But for me, growing up in the prairies, nothing beats the wild open expanses out here!!

Good thing we have two driveways

We have ourselves another scorcher today.  I had hoped to mow the inner yard today, but I don’t want to risk the riding mower’s motor overheating in these temperatures.  So it will wait.  I was also thinking of doing the last bit of the clean up I had started doing around the storage house yesterday, stopping when it got just too hot to be working outside, but nope.  Not gonna happen in this heat!

Despite the heat, both cats are very cuddly.  DaBoy spends his nights upstairs, taking over the bottom of one of the girls’ beds.  You’d think, with his fur coat, the last thing he’d want to do is be in the hottest part of the house, snuggling up to warm feet, but he does.

At least his mom is doing it in the coolest room in the house; the master bedroom.

20180626.cat.pillow

She was using my ankle and foot as a pillow.

Being the suck that I am, I was “trapped” for some time by the adorable fur ball.

My husband has been having a very bad pain day today, so he asked me to go into town to pick up something to help.

It’s a good thing he did.  Otherwise, we would not have known until we were heading out for his medical appointment tomorrow, that we were locked in.

My younger daughter came along with me, and when the girls are along for the ride, they typically go ahead to the gate to unlock and open it while I get the van and drive through, then they lock it up again.  This time, I drive up to the gate, and she’s still struggling with the gate.

The lock is a combination lock; the only thing we had handy at the time my mother asked us to start locking the gate.  Of the 4 tumblers, three weren’t turning.

We tried using tools.  We tried oiling it.  Nothing.  Those tumblers would not move.

Thankfully, we have another driveway, and that gate has a key lock on it.

This other driveway is not normally used.  I’ve mowed a path to it, because we still need to rebuild the barbed wire gate and just haven’t gotten around to it.  Right now, the lock and chain are the only thing keeping it upright and closed.  It’s a rough drive to the gate, the the driveway itself is overgrown.  I knew the path to the gate was clear, because I’d just mowed it, but we double checked the driveway itself to make sure there was nothing that would blow a tire on us or something.  It was good.

So when we got to town, our first stop was at a hardware store.  I picked up a new key lock, plus heavier duty bolt cutters.  It was funny as we went to pay for them.  The cashier joked about using the bolt cutters to cut a lock, then replacing it with a new one.  We told her that yes, that’s exactly what we were doing!  Then we explained that our lock was a combination lock, and the tumblers weren’t turning.  I added in, “Either the weather got to it, or someone tampered with it.”

Her response was, someone probably tampered with it.  When I commented that we live in the middle of nowhere, she just nodded and said, yeah; that’s where it’s most likely.  Then she told us about her brother, who has a trailer out in the sticks, and someone had broken into his locked gate and stole a quad.

An unfortunately reality of living in the sticks.  You’d think it would be safer, but people know that chances of getting caught are much lower, and the police are at least half and hour away.

I couldn’t see any sign of tampering on our lock, but unfortunately, I can’t rule it out.  For it to suddenly stop working like this, it actually seems more likely to be the cause than weather.

After getting the new lock and bolt cutters, we finished our errands, then did a bit of quick Pokemon Go.  We paused to battle a gym at the beach, sitting outside at a picnic table as we played.  Oh, what a lovely breeze off the water!

20180626.beach

The temperatures were 28C, with the humidex putting it at 32C, but the lake it still quite cool, and it made for such a pleasant time outside.

We didn’t stay for long, though.  Once at home, we cut the broken lock off and put on the new one.  I’m going to have to cut copies of the key, so we all have one, plus an extra in the house.  I’ve kept the old lock and will see if I can find a way to open it up and see why it stopped working.

We did stop at the post office on the way home, and found a nice little surprise.  We got our reimbursement for our vehicle registration in our previous province.  It was enough to cover the cost of the bolt cutters, at least. :-)

For now, we keep cool inside.  Looking around in the basement, I found an oscillating fan that actually works, though it needs a major cleaning.  That’s what I’ll be working on, next.

While having lunch with my brother and his wife on the weekend, I found out about something I had been wondering.  In the old part basement, at the window that we used to throw wood through, is a platform.  I had no idea why it was there.  It turns out my brother built it to hold a fan.  There is a screen to replace the window that’s there now, and the fan was used for air circulation to help keep the house cool.  The basement doors would be left open to help cool the house down, but we can’t do that until we’ve cleaned up the new part basement so it’s safe if the cats get down there.  We talked about getting a cheap screen door in the short term, to keep the cats out until we can do that.  The door is a standard size, so we could actually do that.  Something to keep in mind!

My brother described the fan he had on the platform, and none of us could remember seeing it, so I went looking around today.  Which is why I found the oscillating fan.

No sign of the fan he’d built the platform for.  Like so many other things, it has gone missing.  Another thing that came up in conversation, since I’d mentioned my search for a pitchfork in the past, is that there had been about 6 or 8 pitchforks stored in the barn.  There is no sign of them, now.

It’s a good thing we are living here now.  Too many things disappeared while this place was empty. :-(

We got rain!

A chilly day today – enough that we actually turned the furnace back up again – but that’s okay.  We got rain!

Not much, mind you, and I never actually saw it rain, but things are damp out there, which is so good to see.  Tomorrow, we’re supposed to get more.  I certainly hope we do!  As nice as what we got today was, it’s no where near enough, though we are still supposed to get more now and again, throughout the night.

We saw a new bird this morning.  I just barely got a few photos before it took off.

2018.05.17.american.goldfinch

An American Goldfinch.  I’ve seen them at my sister’s bird feeder, and was hoping they would show up in our area, too.  Just the one, so far, but at least I know we can expect to see more of them.

Though we did get rain today, there is still a burn ban, and we haven’t done a burn in ages, so our trip to the dump today included stuff that would normally go into the burn barrel.  We also got another load of paint out of the garage.  One more trip should clear out the last of what’s there right now.

After going to the dump, my daughter and I went into town for an errand, taking advantage of the trip to play some Pokemon Go.  Which meant our regular stop at a Pokegym at the beach.  The lake was so choppy in the wind, I had to go and get pictures.

20180517.beach.groomed

The town has finished grooming the beach.  It all looks like a giant Zen garden right now. :-D

20180517.beach.waves

Definitely not boating conditions!  The water is still very cold, and the wind off of the lake was pretty chill.  Neither of us had jackets, so we didn’t stay long!

With the chill and the damp, this evening sounds like a good time to sit with a hot cup of tea and catch up on some crochet. :-D

Windblown

Oh, what a windy day it has been, today!

Hot, as well.  It’s past 6pm as I write this, and our temperatures are at 28C (82F).  Inside the house it much cooler, though, which is awesome!  We were actually cold last night.

Speaking of temperatures, I asked one of my brothers about the remote sensor on the clothes line pole.  It is, indeed, for weather.  He found a photo of the complete set, so we know what the receiver inside would have looked like.  It had the time, temperature and other information displayed on it.  I don’t recall packing anything like that, but we packed so many things, I doubt I would have noticed something the looks like a digital clock.  He thinks it was set up by our late brother, which means the remote sensor has been out there for more than 8 years – probably more like 10.

So that mystery has been cleared up. :-)

This morning, we discovered a bit of wind damage in the spruce grove outside our living room window.

20180515.broken.tree

The piece stuck in the branches is actually the top of the dead spruce tree on the right.  The top was already broken, but this part was broken free in the wind.  I did a check around the yard and, aside from smaller branches in the yard here and there, there was nothing else broken.  I kept an eye on it throughout the morning, and by afternoon, the wind had shaken it loose from the branches holding it, enough that it’s not standing upright on the ground, looking for all the world like it had grown there.

A run into town to pick up prescription refills was an opportunity for my daughter and I to play some Pokemon Go and check out the lake.

20180515.sailboats

One of our regular stops is at this park near the marina, where the van was buffeted by the wind, and we watched as several of these sail boats were blown right over onto their sides, help up only by other boats, before rocking back again.

20180515.beach.grooming

We also stopped to visit the beach, which was being groomed today.  You can see the equipment for in the distance.

On the way home, we stopped at the post office, and part of my younger daughter’s birthday gift came in.  Her birthday is next month, but we’ve never held much to the days themselves, and spread out our recognition over time.  Which means she got her gift right away. :-)

20180515.birthday.gift

A very pretty set of throwing knives!  We’ve already discussed where we’d want to set up a target for practicing.  We would like to get an archery butt, and have found the perfect place to set it up.  Eventually, we want to get into archery again.  My husband and I used to shoot regularly, before we had kids.  I shot recurve, my husband shot a compound.  The girls are interested, too, so this would be a family affair. :-)

Well, the sky is getting dark outside my window.  I’m hoping that means the predicted rains (only 40% chance, though) will finally come.  If not today, by Friday, they are saying there is an 80% chance of showers, 60% chance on Thursday.  Any little bit will help.  I found out this morning that there was another fire to the Northeast of us yesterday.  In the early evening, some buildings were lost.  From what I’m told, the land had just changed ownership, and no one was living there, so at least it wasn’t someone’s home that was lost.  I hope the new owners had insurance, though.  There were still hot spots going today, and in these winds, there is extreme danger of sparks jumping the road.  At the moment, the general fire ban still allows for fire pits and BBQs, but if we don’t get rain, I foresee that changing soon.  At least the winds are dying down, as the evening progresses, but I’m still seeing trees swaying out my window.

We shall see what tomorrow brings us.

Beach Weather!

The girls and I had to make a run into town for them to pick up and sign their tax paperwork (no unhappy surprises for them, thank God!).  It was a gorgeous day, so when we took advantage of being in town to play some Pokemon Go, we also took advantage of a Pokemon Go gym being right at the beach.

It’s 21C in town, and the cool breezes off the lake made it perfect for enjoying the sun and sand!  There were quite a few people enjoying it.  Come summer time, when the tourist season kicks in, this beach gets quite crowded, so I much prefer to visit it now!

20180512.beach1

My younger daughter decided to go right into the water – as did others we saw on the beach.  The ambient temperature might have been nice, but the lake water is still ice cold!

20180512.beach2

You can just barely see it in the above picture, but there is actually still ice on the lake, way off in the distance – the tiniest patch visible near the top left of the photo.  To the right of centre, you can see someone in a power boat.

20180512.beach3

One of the places we regularly stop to play Pokemon Go is the parking lot for a park, the yacht club, and marina.  Today, there was a whole forest of masts on the hillside of the park, as people were bringing over tiny sailboats to prepare them.  We could see more being brought over as we played the game, easily carried by only two people. The parking lot itself was quite full of people tending to their boats, both for commercial fishing and for casual use.

The population of this town basically doubles in the summer, with all the people who come out to their cottages, some for a couple of months, others just for the weekends from the city.

When it’s quiet like this, I like to keep on the lookout for interesting rocks, such as “fairy stones” (rocks with holes in them, typically bored by local bivalves, the shells of which also dot the beach) and sometimes small fossils that get driven onto the beach by the tides as the ice melts.  Yes, this lake is large enough to have a tide.

This is one of the things about the move back that I am looking forward to enjoying!
