There be Deer here

It seems that putting the feed out in the evening, instead of the morning, has been a good idea.  Three deer came by, about half an hour after I put the feed out, when none at all showed up during the day.  Which means they had plenty to eat, since the birds didn’t get a chance to eat it all, first! :-D

2018-05-14.deer1

I think it’s the same trio that showed up last time, but I’d have to compare photos to be sure.

2018-05-14.deer2

Just look at those little baby antlers! :-D

2018-05-14.deer3

This one has such a loooong smooth face.

The fur on all of them was looking pretty rough.

2018-05-14.deer4

This one had gone over to the edge of the trees and started nibbling on the new leaves on the wild roses, but it kept getting distracted.  Then its fur got all puffed out as it kept staring in different areas.

The other two starting checking out the distraction, too.

Eventually, the source of their agitation emerged…

2018-05-14.cat

It was funny to see Nasty Crime Boy start crouching down in stalking position while staring down the deer!

2018-05-14.deer5

When the deer showed up, I just started taking as many shots as quickly as I could, hoping I’d get at least a few good ones.  I ended up taking over 100 pictures in the short time they were here.  I got several of this deer making funny faces like this, with this one being the clearest.  The deer was chewing on something that seemed to be giving it a hard time, resulting in photos that look like it’s having a good laugh!

2018-05-14.deer6

There was the one deer with the long, smooth face.  Then there is this one, with the lumpy, bumpy face.

Too cute!

I’m Sensing Something – or not!

While cleaning up around the yard, one of the girls reached the far post of the clothes line and called me over to look at something.

Hmm…

20180514.sensor1

So… we have a National Geographic remote sensor, attached to the clothes line post, with electric tape.  (The rope is there because the post as started to lean over.)

There isn’t really anything to say what it’s there to sense.  A search has turned up nothing; this thing is so old, nothing even close to it is showing up.  Most of what does show up is weather related, but they look so completely different, I can’t even guess that this is also some sort of weather sensor.

20180514.sensor2

The wire from the sensor is also attached to the pole with electric tape.

This has been there long enough for that bit of lichen above it to actually overlap it!

I’m guessing it was sending a signal to a receiver inside the house at some point, though I can’t recall finding anything that could be a receiver while we were packing up my parents’ stuff.

20180514.sensor3

Though this device isn’t going to be sending signals anywhere, anymore!

I’m going to have to ask a sibling about it and find out what the story is!

In other areas…

Along with the clean up, we’re gathering a fair bit of stuff that normally would go into the burn barrel.  We haven’t done a burn in ages, with good reason.  There is a total burn ban in the area, and while approved fire pits and BBQs are still allowed, we aren’t going to take any chances.  Sure, we could hook up a hose, now that the outside taps have been turned on again, and spray the area around the burn barrel, but why take chances?  This stuff is just going to have to go to the dump.

I also did the meter reading today and sent that in.  I then went back over the last 5 readings and worked out the differences from month to month on our power usage.  This gives me some idea of what we can expect on our next electric bill.  It was quite interesting.  Our highest bill was just under $600, then the next one was about $550 or so.  Those two months can predictably be our highest consumption periods, though this also included the weeks we spent heating water every day, until we could get the new hot water tank.  The next month saw a consumption drop of about 1/3, and the month after that showed another slight drop.  That’s when we saw bills of just over and just under the $400.  This month?  The consumption dropped by almost half – more than 2/3s less than our highest month of consumption.  So our next bill, I am thinking we will see just a bit more than $200.  It should be interesting to see how much it’ll drop when we are at our lowest consumption period over the summer.

Interestingly, I found that we have been living here long enough to qualify for the electric company’s “equal payment” plan – with monthly payments of only $44.  !!  Based on the last 6 months of meter readings, including the one I sent in today, I just don’t see how they came to that number.  Unless I’m just not understanding something about the plan.  I think we’ll give it a few more months and see if that changes, before we apply for it.

Our electric bill is much, much higher than it was when we were living in the city, which we expected.  I’m just glad we’re not living in Ontario.  I know someone there who got an electric bill of over $2000 – about double what they paid in the same month the previous year, with less consumption!  So I’m definitely not complaining about our power bills, that’s for sure!  Still, we will be examining our options to see what we can do to bring the bills down.  Especially for the winter months.  Options that do NOT include heating with wood, since that will increase the insurance costs.  Add in the cost of buying wood, and there would be no savings at all.  Theoretically, we could cut our own wood, but even if we were all able bodied enough to do the work ourselves, it’s not worth it.  There are too many other things that our time, efforts and energy need to go to.  Like so many other things, it’s a balance of priorities, not just about dollars and cents.

Which is how we will be looking at all sorts of things as we clean the place up and learn what work it needs.  There is going to be quite a few things where we are simply going to hire people to come in and do it, rather than try and do it ourselves.  Sometimes, it’s just more efficient that way, even if it costs money.  I think some of the biggest problems we are finding now come down to the fact that no one wanted to spend the money to hire people to do it, but didn’t necessarily have the time, knowledge, resources, or skills to do it themselves.  Sometimes, the best way to save money in the long run, is to spend money in the short run.

Of course, that requires having the money to spend in the short run, which is always its own problem, too!

To complicate things further, we have my mother, who owns the place, and siblings, telling us about things that will need to be taken care of, like covering holes in shed roofs.  Which we do appreciate, since we haven’t spent a lot of time looking at the outbuildings, with our focus being the house and yard.  Then we go to look at what they are talking about, and all I can think is, this shed is not worth patching.  It’s not worth fixing.  It should be torn down and gotten rid of.  The stuff inside that’s worth keeping needs to be moved elsewhere, to protect it, and the rest needs to be turfed. Heck, some of the sheds I’ve gone into, I’m reluctant to even walk across the floors.  I’m no light weight, and there’s a good chance the rotting wood won’t hold my weight!  Meanwhile, things that could have been salvaged, like the log cabin out by the fire pit, has a roof that was allowed to cave into all the stuff that had been store inside it.

Ah, well.  Little by little, we’re figuring it out.

New Sparrow: updated

First off, a happy mother’s day to all the moms out there.  I hope you had a lovely day of it.  My own was nice and quiet, and I am quite delighted with my early mother’s day gift from my husband; an OBD II diagnostic tool that plugs into the van, with readings sent to an app on my phone via Bluetooth.

According to it, the van is doing just great.  In the near future, I’ll have to get my daughter to drive, so I can see what readings come up while driving.

My husband knows what makes my heart to pitter patter very well! :-D

We haven’t been seeing any deer lately, again, though the piles of feed I’m leaving out in the evening are gone in the the morning, so they do seem to still be coming out.  There is still plenty of scattered grain for the birds, though.  Right now, we’re still getting mostly fox sparrows and white throated sparrows, but today we saw a new one.

2018-05-13.bird1

There were only two of them, so we almost missed them among the other birds.

2018-05-13.bird2

Next to the white throated sparrow, you can see the bodies are almost identical, until you get to the head, neck and chest.  I’m guessing that means it’s also a type of sparrow, but a quick search for sparrows has brought up nothing with a head like that.  I’ll have to try looking some more later, but if you happen to know what it is, please feel free to let me know in the comments. :-)

Update: May 14

It looks like the new bird is a Harris’s Sparrow.

Beach Weather!

The girls and I had to make a run into town for them to pick up and sign their tax paperwork (no unhappy surprises for them, thank God!).  It was a gorgeous day, so when we took advantage of being in town to play some Pokemon Go, we also took advantage of a Pokemon Go gym being right at the beach.

It’s 21C in town, and the cool breezes off the lake made it perfect for enjoying the sun and sand!  There were quite a few people enjoying it.  Come summer time, when the tourist season kicks in, this beach gets quite crowded, so I much prefer to visit it now!

20180512.beach1

My younger daughter decided to go right into the water – as did others we saw on the beach.  The ambient temperature might have been nice, but the lake water is still ice cold!

20180512.beach2

You can just barely see it in the above picture, but there is actually still ice on the lake, way off in the distance – the tiniest patch visible near the top left of the photo.  To the right of centre, you can see someone in a power boat.

20180512.beach3

One of the places we regularly stop to play Pokemon Go is the parking lot for a park, the yacht club, and marina.  Today, there was a whole forest of masts on the hillside of the park, as people were bringing over tiny sailboats to prepare them.  We could see more being brought over as we played the game, easily carried by only two people. The parking lot itself was quite full of people tending to their boats, both for commercial fishing and for casual use.

The population of this town basically doubles in the summer, with all the people who come out to their cottages, some for a couple of months, others just for the weekends from the city.

When it’s quiet like this, I like to keep on the lookout for interesting rocks, such as “fairy stones” (rocks with holes in them, typically bored by local bivalves, the shells of which also dot the beach) and sometimes small fossils that get driven onto the beach by the tides as the ice melts.  Yes, this lake is large enough to have a tide.

This is one of the things about the move back that I am looking forward to enjoying!

Deer Visitors

It was almost too dark to get photos, but I was able to get some of a trio of deer visitors!

When I saw three of them, I thought it might be Mama and the Twins, but once the antler nubs started to show, we could see that her twins were 1 male and 1 female.

Today’s visitors included two young males.

2018-05-10.3deer

You can see the antler nubs on the two deer feeding in the photo above.

2018-05-10.2.male.deer.feeding

I had put out 8 little piles of seeds this evening, and they moved around a lot, from pile to pile, making it hard to get photos in the failing light.  I got a lot of motion shots! :-D

2018-05-10.2.male.deer

I don’t think I recognize them at all.

While we’re not seeing deer as often anymore, now that the snow is gone (though from the disappearing feed, I’d say they’re coming over throughout the night), the ones we do see are looking rather rough, with all sorts of patches missing in their fur, and looking quite thin, as well.  It may be they’re losing their winter coats, but the patches in their fur don’t look like they are from shedding.

2018-05-10.male.deer

They didn’t stay long, nibbling at the piles of seeds while constantly on the alert.  After a while, they headed out into the garden area and started grazing by the remains of the wood pile.

With spring finally showing some greenery, any feed we put out is basically a treat.  They should be finding plenty of food in the bush, now.

New Heights

With the new hospital bed installed, we still need to figure out what to do with the king size mattress.  The first thing I’ll need to do is get a king size mattress cover before we can store it anywhere.  Until then, it’s in our dining room, leaning against a wall.

The cats are in heaven.

20180509_141400-25%

They just LOVE the height.  The fact that it’s also soft is certainly being taken advantage of, too!

20180509_141408-25%

DaBoy is absolutely languid.

20180509_154651-25%

Mother and son; a matched set.

20180509_154711-25%

They are just too cute for words!

Meanwhile, I phoned the electric company, since someone had come in to check the lines while I was in the city, to find out what their assessment was.  The woman I spoke to looked up the notes, and talked about how, if we hired an arborist to clear the line to the house, they would come out to shut off the power, and drop the line, if necessary.  What about the lines to the other pole? I asked.  There was nothing in the notes.  I described our set up, and how the lines from the main pole in the outer yard run through trees in the inner yard to reach the pole in the garden, before continuing on across the road.

20180507.power.lines.trees2

You can barely see the power lines just right of center at the top of this photo.

There was nothing in the notes about it.  This might be on me; when I called, I was thinking of the line to the house.  It wasn’t until after I arranged for the assessment that I walked around and noted the lines to the garden.  The guy that came out may have only been told to check the line to the house, which is our responsibility.  The house line runs below the lines that lead to the pole in the garden.

Just to be sure, she wrote us up for another service check to assess, and hopefully included her own notes about where it needs to be checked.  I hope that, this time, I’ll be home to talk to the assessor when he arrives.

The Re-Farmer

That was quick. Also, deer!

Early this morning, I saw a pair of deer coming into the feeding area.  Unfortunately, because we haven’t had them coming by in the last while, I hadn’t put any feed out the night before, so there wasn’t much there for them.  Still, I got a few pictures, even through the reflections in the window. :-)

2018-05-08.two.deer

They are both looking pretty rough around the edges!  I do think they’ve been here before.

Notice the little antler buds on the deer in the foreground? :-)

2018-05-08.deer1

The female has some nicks out of an ear, and it looks like some scarring on her snout, too.

2018-05-08.deer2

Aside from the missing patches of fur on the male that can be seen in the first photo, he’s looking pretty thin, too!

Just before I went to put more feed out tonight, I spotted a single deer through our bedroom window, making its way through the maple grove to the feeding area.  The noise of me going outside would have scared it off, though.  I hope it comes back later.  :-)

This morning, my husband’s hospital bed was supposed to be delivered between 10 and 11 pm.  So this morning, we dismantled our king size bed, which has been resting on a pair of queen box springs until we could get a proper bed frame again.  The mattress just got leaned on the wall at first, and the box springs went into the dining room at first.  Then I went out to feed the cats.

Beep Beep stood up to say hello! :-D

20180508.beepbeep.standing

Then, with the help of one of the girls, the box springs got moved outside, just to lean on a tree until they could be taken to the shed.

The outside cats were very curious about this!

20180508.beepbeep.boxspring

Well, hello, again, Beep Beep!

I had to head out at 11:30.  My mother registered her vehicle, effective this morning, so I drove her car out to meet my brother at her place, as a surprise.  I was going to accompany them for a medical appointment in the city, which was also a surprise.

It turns out my mother doesn’t like surprises.

Ah, well.

It was a long and draining day for all, but we got the information we needed, then took the time to explain it again to my mother on the way back.  My brother, sweetheart that he is, drove me home before driving the 1 1/2 hours back to his place.  It was a VERY long day for him!

While I was gone, much to my surprise, someone from the electric company came out to check the power lines!  I was told they’d have someone out within 2 weeks.  I wasn’t expecting someone the very next day! :-D  I will have to phone them again to find out what their assessment was, since not a lot of information was shared while the guy was here and my daughters were buy hauling box springs to the shed and cleaning up the yard.

As for the hospital bed, it did finally get delivered and set up, several hours later than expected. Once that was done, my daughters got the king size mattress out – I have no idea where we’re going to store that thing! – then set up the spare twin bed up for me.  I had had other plans for it – plans that can’t be done with the king size bed – but… oh, well.  Thankfully, the master bedroom is quite big, and there’s more than enough room.  I hope it works out better for my husband.  At least he won’t be losing his balance trying to get in and out of bed anymore, since he can adjust the height to exactly where he needs it.

All in all, I’m really happy about how quick things got followed through on, both for the bed, and with the electric company.

Power

Today I had a talk with the electric company.

Within the next two weeks, they’re going to send someone out to check out our power lines and the trees, to assess what equipment they will need to safely cut the trees away from the power lines.  That is such a relief!  And, it will be done at no cost to us.

With that in mind, I did a once-around the yard, before my daughters went out to start working on the wood pile in the garden, and do some yard clean up.

20180507.woodpile

This is what the pile looked like, before they started on it today.  Much, much smaller than it was.

Right now, it’s down to mostly leaves and dirt, which makes cleaning it up harder.  They took a break from it to start raking some leaves up from a pile in the yard that got snowed on before it was cleared away, plus starting on some of the flower gardens.  The leaves and, later in the year, grass clippings, will be methodically added to the garden area to begin the process of building up the soil.

20180507.power.pole

The main thing I wanted to check out was this power pole in the garden area.

The main power pole is on the opposite side of the house, outside the yard.  That is the one that has the power line to the house itself.

This pole?

I didn’t know anything about it.  I just found out more.

The power lines attached to it run across the road to a power pole on the neighbour’s side of the ditch.  In the other direction, the lines run to our own main power pole.  These are the lines that supply power to the main pole, which then has lines running to the house, pump shack, the garage (up until the movers ran into it), and in the past, the barn as well, which will be set up again when we replace the broken power pole at the garage and get the electricity hooked back up, there.

We’re talking more than 4000 volts running to that post.

20180507.power.lines.trees1

Then through the maple grove.

20180507.power.lines.trees2

Straight through some of the branches.

Can you see the lines?

Trust me.  They are there.  Barely visible.

I had been concerned about the more visible line running to the house.  These ones, however, are at far more risk!

I suspect there is going to be quite a lot of tree trimming, once the assessment is made.

We’ll have some of our own clean up to do through there, too.  It seems someone did already start to, at some point.

20180507.cut.trees

A few dead trees had been cut, then the pieces cut up a bit.

Then just left there.

I don’t know when this was done, but it can’t have been more than a couple of years, if that.  I used to be able to mow the lawn in between these trees.  It used to be very park-like, clear and open.

I hope to return it to that state.

It will make a big difference, to have the electric company coming in to take care of the trees that are endangering the power lines.  Also on the list of things to happen soon, the septic service company will be out at the end of the week to empty the tank.  I think we’ll all be feeling much better once that’s done; there has been this sort of dread in the back of my mind for some time, despite assurances by the septic service company, that the tank is too full and might back up into our basement.  That would be quite the disaster.  My oldest brother has already had to deal with that happening, when it broke down and he had to hire an excavator to dig around the tank so it could be fixed on this inside, as well as the mechanisms in the basement.

My brother had come out on Friday to put the battery back in my mother’s car for her and, while out and about with other things, noticed a single on the Old Kitchen had lifted up.  At first, it looked like a single had been lost, but on closer examination, it seems to have basically folded itself up.  A trip into town today included picking up some roof tar, which can be applied with a caulking gun, so we can gently fold them back and stick them in place.  The problem will be getting to it.  It’s right under the peak of the roof, and about as far to the outer edge of the roof as can be.  Getting to it is not going to be easy, nor very safe.

I also picked up a tube caulking that can be painted, to seal the screw holes from the satellite dishes that had been attached to the side of the house before we upgraded to the ones now mounted on the sun room roof.  I want to see if those need to be sealed with roofing tar, too.

I really don’t want any more leaks happening!

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day.  I will be going to to help my brother take my mother to a medical appointment in the city, so I can start getting informed and, in time, take over from him in taking my mother to these appointments.  Meanwhile, just before I have to leave, my husband’s hospital bed is going to be delivered.  I will have to leave it to the girls to set up a second bed for me, once the hospital bed is installed.

Little by little, it’s getting done.

I’m going to be so happy when all of these are finished!

What is this? A guessing game

Here’s a question for you, dear readers.

Can you guess what this piece of equipment is?

Here is a view of most of it…

Domesticity

It’s been a lovely day today!  Enough that we’ve actually opened most of the windows in the house.  We even got the inside front door open again.  I’d tried to open it while my brother was here, to show him how the outside screen door was stuck, as if it were painted shut (it isn’t).  I had managed to get the top unstuck, but not the bottom.  I wasn’t able to show him this, though, as the inside door wouldn’t budge.  He tried it as well, but we both stopped because we didn’t want to break the door knob.  When I tried it again this morning, I discovered it wasn’t the door itself that was stuck; it was the knob!  For some reason, it turned only part way; far enough that we didn’t notice, but not enough to get the tongue out of the groove.

Looks like we’re going to have to add “door knobs” to the list of things to replace.

Then, I set up our little step ladder in front of the screen door.

20180505.cat.perched

Yeah, I’m a suck when it comes to the cats, but in this case, without it there, the cats keep trying to get onto the dining room window, which involves jumping up onto shelves that hold a bunch of plants, coffee pot, kettle, etc.  All stuff that can be knocked over by our less then elegant (amazingly clumsy) cats, too easily! :-D  So, the lady gets her own perch, to look out the window at the birds.

I had hoped to get more work done on the wood pile in the garden, but today ended up being more of a day of domesticity.  Things like cleaning the bathroom took priority.

It’s remarkable how different something as basic as cleaning a bathroom changes when you are on well water that is so rich in iron and minerals.  Regular household cleaners don’t cut it – literally – while the specialty cleaners need greater care, like making sure windows are wide open!  At least they’re septic friendly.

That’s another thing that’s reaching the top of our to-do list.  The tank hasn’t been emptied in 2 years and, while the house was empty, it was still used now and then.  No way of knowing how full that tank was, but with 4 people now living here, it’s bound to be overdue for emptying.  The ground should be thawed enough for it too be done.  After this, we’ll go back to the usual emptying of the tank in the late fall.

I did make a point of going out and starting my mom’s car again, to make sure all is well, after yesterday’s troubles when the battery was put back.  All was well.

Except for the bird, trapped in the garage.

Though the main door stays open right now, until we can replace the handle, the bird stayed in the rafters and wouldn’t fly lower, though the wide open door.  When I later found it bashing itself into the window in the lean to my mother’s car is parked in, I went around and opened the back door from the outside.  That seemed to do that trick.  I heard it flying out before I got much more than 10 feet away.

My brother was sure the new door handle we got would work, even if the cable doesn’t go through the squared post like the old one did, so I took another look at it.  I think he’s right.  One end of the cable was woven through a hole in the plate, the squared post, and then a second hole in the plate, before being tied to the cable from the other side.  I managed to get the knot undone.  The end of the wire cable that threaded through the holes is fraying, however, so it took some doing to get it undone.

I’m only bleeding a little bit.

I’m going to have to put tape or something on the end, to be able to thread it back through the second hole in the plate.

As for the handle itself, it was intended for a wooden door.  The screws it came with are wood screws, and short.  I’m going to have to look around for some nuts and bolts in the appropriate size.  There are jars and tins of screws, nails and who knows what else, all over the place, so I should be able to find something, somewhere.

That squared post is still a bit of a problem, though.  It’s a couple of inches longer than the old one.  Which means the plate won’t be as close to the back of the door as it was, before.  I’m hoping that won’t actually make a difference, since the whole thing freely turns to pull the cables.  It should still be up against the door, though.  Ah, well.  We’ll see how it works once I find some fasteners for the handle.

The cables, themselves, could probably use replacing, too.

So does the entire door, really.  It’s definitely the worse for wear!

More things to add to the list!
