I got to pet her!

Yes, her…

Brussel!!!

I’ve been able to sneak a touch while she was eating on the cat house roof maybe twice before. She’d panic and run off.

Today, she was at the water bowl in the sunroom as I came in from outside, her back to me. I started to pet her back, and she just kept drinking! A couple of other friendlier cats started to push in on either side of her, wanting pets, too, so she started looking around. That’s when she finally looked behind her and saw me, still petting her back.

She moved away immediately, but not in a panic, and not in a run. She just went under my husband’s walker and watched me.

So I started petting other cats, and saw the fluffy tortie was in reach, so I picked her up. Her response was to immediately start purring! She still wanted down, but she enjoyed some cuddles, first.

I even got to pet Sad Face (AKA: Shop Towel) for a bit.

I’m just so excited to finally pet Brussel. It’s only taken a couple of years! She’s been hanging out in the sun room a lot more, too.

Now, if only her short haired sister, Sprout, would start coming to the sun room, too. I’ve stopped putting food under the shrine, so she at least had to come to the kibble house to eat.

Progress!

If I fits…

… I sits.

I had intended to put this box in the shelf shelter, as the cats have broken and torn off most of the insulation “walls” I put across of fronts. It’s too big, so I stuck it in the water bowl house. It didn’t take long for Judgement to discover it!

It’s becoming quite warm out there. Yesterday, we reached 0C. Reports to the road conditions group I’m on described icy roads and even rain!

Today, we’re supposed to reach a high of -1C. We are already at -3C, with a “RealFeel” of +1C. In a few days, we are expected to reach highs several degrees above freezing for almost a week. I’ve even seen a forecast of +6C, but only from The Weather Network app on the TV, that we get through our Roku device. That’s the only one that’s connected to the Government of Canada data.

Speaking of the Government of Canada, the past few days has seen news that even filtered its way through the social media censors. It took this long for a federal court to rule that our Prime Dictator’s use of the Emergency Act against the trucker protests 2 years ago was, in fact, unconstitutional. Of course, everyone who read the Act knew that already, just like we all know all the mandates and restrictions were unconstitutional and illegal. There are still four political prisoners rotting in jail, once again denied bail.

Of course, our Supreme Leaders admit no wrong and plan to appeal. Why not? They don’t have to pay the course costs. We do. Listening to various Liberal and NDP politicians lying through their teeth in their responses is as disgusting as ever. Their paid media is having difficulty covering for them, but they do it, anyhow. Without all that government money flowing, they would have collapsed years ago. Only the independent media is reporting on it fully. At least, in beteen getting arrested or assaulted for asking questions.

I’m thankful to be out here in the boonies, and not in the cities right now. Aside from the increased costs, we are largely untouched by their shenanigans.

It’s getting really hard to afford to feed the kitties, though.

The Re-Farmer

(Dangit. I wrote this post this morning, and I was sure I published it. It’s now late evening, and I just found it in my drafts.

Oops!)

I think it worked

Yesterday evening, we finally got a good look at the cat stuck in the old kitchen!

I put the big cat carrier on the freezer, with food and water. We had a small packet of a wet catfood treat left from a donation a whole back. Just enough for one cat, so that got squeezed into a small dish and stuck into the back of the carrier. I even put some cat nip in there.

It took a while, but eventually, the cat came out. I spotted it in the carrier, digging around the blanket inside, the food dish empty, and almost pushed out the door! As soon as the cat saw me, though, it ran off.

It didn’t quite run away, though. When I saw a pair of ears, just barely visible behind the kibble bin, I waited. Of course, one of the teenage cats inside wanted attention, and I ended up with Ghosty in my arms.

Well, that got his attention! The pair of ears became a pair of eyes, then a whole head, as the cat stretched its neck to see Ghosty through the window. Which got Ghosty’s attention, too!

For the next whole, I would stand at the window in the door, holding a different cat. The cat in the old kitchen seemed to be more comfortable seeing cats instead of just a human. I could see it was wanting to get back to the food and water on the freezer, so I didn’t interrupt too much. The way the door is oriented to the stairs, my daughters could monitor things from the top of the stairs. We did not try to go into the old kitchen to let it out, though, since we knew it would just disappear again.

This morning, while feeding the outside cats, I made sure to leave both doors between the old kitchen and sun room wide open. A daughter was stationed at the window to see if the cat left.

Of course, there was a major rush of other cats going into the old kitchen, and this time, we just left them. I finished my morning rounds, then checked with my daughter.

She did not see the cat leave, though all the others had left.

In the end, we decided to leave the doors between the old kitchen and the sun room wide open for a few hours. We did have to make extra sure the door into the rest of the house was securely closed. That one has been known to pop open, if we’re not careful!

Well, I just got back from checking the old kitchen. It seemed empty, so I went in.

I moved cat carrier to the sun room for the cats to get used to, since we plan to “trap” a cat in it for cheap spay/neuter day. I had to pull the inner old kitchen door – the one with no window – closed behind me, to keep cats from going into the old kitchen again.

I couldn’t see the cat that had been stuck overnight anywhere, but I didn’t go outside. I did stay to pet the crowd of cats swirling around my legs, vying for attention.

But not this one.

This is the one female we can be pretty sure to be able to catch for the cheap spay day, but she was not allowing contact, today!

She and her two siblings from the last litter are still so tiny! Hard to believe they are 7 months old! I did get to cuddle her fuzzy black and white brother, but her fluffball tabby sibling it the shiest of them all.

While petting the cats, I heard a commotion from the old kitchen. Thinking it could be the stuck cat, I checked. No sign of a cat – until I looked at the inside door.

Mitzy looked back at me!

She had scrambled her way up the door and was hanging off the window! What a monkey!

So it does look like the stuck cat has finally gotten out. We will keep monitoring, just in case.

Come spring time, we will have to empty out the old kitchen as best we can, fpr clean up. There was no litter box in there while the cat was stuck!

At least for now, the room should stay more or less freezing, so we shouldn’t need to worry about smell. We are at only -2C . By the end of the month, we are expecting several days at +3C. Things will be melt7ng outside!

What concerns me about the warm weather is, the ladies might go into heat early… and there’s nothing we can do about it, since we can’t catch them to get them spayed.

*sigh*

For now, though, it at least looks like the trapped cat is no longer trapped.

Should be easy, and kitty problems

First, the cuteness!

Brussel is such a gorgeous cat! I want to snuggle her!!! Alas, she still won’t allow us to get close.

This afternoon, I was planning to head into town to cancel the insurance on my mother’s car, until we can get it taken in. My husband was going to come with me, to finally get his photo ID. Unfortunately, the change in his medication is still causing intense intestinal distress. He was up almost all night, dealing with it.

Also on the to-do list was a stop at the grocery store for more toilet paper. !!!

Needless to say, he wasn’t up to the outing today.

So I headed out shortly after doing my morning rounds.

We have a problem right now, though.

When I go into the sun room with the kibble, I often get a rush of cats coming through the door. Sometimes, I can close the inner door behind me as I go through and stop it, but other times, they’re just too fast for me.

So I leave the doors open.

Usually, by the time I finish putting out the kibble and warm water, they’ve come out on their own. Sometimes, they need a bit of encouragement. Every once in a while, a cat hides somewhere. We check through the window of the inside door until we see it, and usually, it will run out after we go in and open the door to the sunroom.

Yesterday, when I did the evening feeding, I was stampeded by cats who were more interested in exploring the old kitchen than food. In the end, I left the sun room doors open so they could go out on their own, because they were too excited for me to get them out.

When I opened the door to go into the house, though, several made a run for it!

A couple of hours later, my daughter came up to me, asking if I knew there was a herd of cats in the old kitchen. I’d forgotten to tell her about it! I explained what happened, and she went and got them all out.

Except she wasn’t positive it was all of them. She left the light on, so we could check through the window.

Some time later, my husband opened the door and scared the heck out of a cat.

It hid somewhere, on the opposite side of the room from the doors.

My daughters caught glimpses of it throughout the night, but I never saw it. It was one of the “printer babies” – a white and grey.

When I did the cat stuff this morning, I left the old kitchen door on the sunroom side just a little bit open, hoping it would come out, but others would not go in. I did see a white and grey slink out, but this was a friendly one that loves pets, not the scaredy cat that ran away. The friendly one had snuck through into the sun room after I left the door partly open.

I even set out cat treats and catnip in the sunroom, in hopes of luring it out.

No luck. I did, however, finally catch a quick sighting of it as it disappeared under the plastic couch we have in there.

The other cats, however, were sure happy with the treats and nip

I’ve since gone to town and back, and it’s still in there. I finally put a cat carrier on the freezer, with some food in it. If nothing else, it’ll have a warmer place to curl up in. The door into the old kitchen is so loud, though, there is no way we could sneak up on it if it were asleep in there.

Meanwhile…

My first stop in town was to the auto insurance place. Not the one we usually go to, but the one I went to to insure the truck. It’s just easier to park at.

While going in, I made sure to check and, while they don’t have the automated doors, the place is barrier free, so my husband will be able to get in and out with his walker, with no trouble.

After canceling the insurance (we’ll just redirect the money to savings, to go towards potential repairs), we were chatting and I mentioned that my husband was supposed to come in for his photo ID, and we talked a bit about accessibility. It reminded me to ask what he needed to bring to get his ID.

I’m so glad I did.

I told her about when he tried before, and how since his name on his old file, and his (at the time, still valid) driver’s license did not match the name on his birth certificate, they wouldnt allow a transfer. Never mind that he’d never used any other name, even while in the military. The provincial insurance provider would not accept it and would not allow him to transfer his driver’s license. We were actually told that he would need to legally change his name… to his legal name.

It was surreal.

Unfortunately, all the hassle and waiting to fund this out left him in massive amounts of pain. We later made some calls to an ombudsman, and were told he just needed to bring some mail with his full name and current address on it, and they could work with that. He just never made it back to do it. So that had been what he intended to do, today.

The woman that was helping me was not impressed that this happened to us. I had told her how I’d had to get my marriage license from vital statistics to get mine, and it was months before I could finally get my driver’s license transferred. She told me she had a similar issue. She had a 93 yr old widow who, with changes in the ID laws, had to get a photo ID for the first time in her life. The provider wanted her to get her marriage certificate – many years after the death of her husband – to prove her name change, so she could access her pension money. !!! The woman telling me this said she fought it and got it done, but it took three months!

Bureaucracy is insane.

She gave me a printout of what my husband could bring to prove his ID, and a form for third party identification. That one can be signed by a doctor or pharmacist, or a post master. When I tried to use that form, years ago, the insurance provider would not accept our local post master, saying she wasn’t really a post master. I guess that certificate on the wall at the post office that says she is, is just for decoration? A pharmacist would be better for my husband, anyhow. They know him very well, by now.

That form allows for a physical address only, so he will need his health card as well, as that has the postal address on it. Then, he just needs his birth certificate. All they will need to do is change the name on file to match it to what’s on his birth certificate.

That’s it. One thing to change on his old file. No other hoop jumping.

This is how it should have been, 6 years ago!

Getting the card is only $20, too, since it’s not a drivers license. My husband talks about getting his license again. He shouldn’t drive, with all the meds he’s on, but he would be another emergency back up driver. He’ll have to start from scratch, though, and do the tests all over again. Which he’s willing to do.

Maybe after he gets his new glasses, though!

So it was good news, and I’m glad I remembered to ask about it. It’s just a matter of when he will be physically up for the trip.

So that’s all done.

Now I’m going to go see if there’s a kitty in a carrier!

The Re-Farmer

Staying home today!

I’m going to enjoy not going anywhere today. 😁

A good day for gardening videos, like this one.

We still have not been able to start seeds indoors. I need access to the aquarium greenhouse, but we’ve got too much shoved in front of it that we don’t know where else to put. Like an armchair that needs repair. It will probably have to get moved to the storage house, but there’s too much snow in the way to carry something like that.

We really need to get those onions started soon, though!

The Re-Farmer

Cleared

When I came out to feed the yard cats this morning, I found quite a few things knocked about! It wasn’t too bad, this time. Unfortunately, they’ve knocked everything off the counter shelf a few times. Even the sheer of insulation I added, so they wouldn’t be sott8ng on the metal surface, as well as to block the gap in the back, at the window. Come springtime, it’s going to be quite a job to clean it all up. Especially the various containers of screws and other small stuff like that. I have no idea how they managed to knock some of this stuff off

This morning, I counted only 23 cats, including this beast.

He even let me pet him, though he ran off when one of the socialized males came over, demanding pets. Looking through the bathroom window a little while ago, I could see him in the upside down box that is supporting one end of the platform. I’m amazed he could squeeze into there, he’s such a big boy!

I really hope we will be able to snag him for the cheap spay/neuter day next month. We have kept the large carrier in the sun room many times, but I have never seen him check it out. He’s so big, though, he wouldn’t have a lot of room in there! It’s one thing to have Leyendecker in there, as he’s pretty calm about the whole thing, and quite another to have a big cat that’s still pretty feral!

Of course, it’s a moot point if he’s not around that morning. We shall see.

In other things, little Spewie got quite a workout yesterday.

I’ve driven through the snow to reach the house a couple of times, so I used the tire tracks to decide how much to clear. The truck might be good for getting through, but we still need to be able to walk around it.

We now have enough space to drive in, turn around, and get close to the house. I even cleared more towards the sun room, so that it’ll be easier to unload the kibble bags straight to the old kitchen.

Or, to load the truck from the old kitchen. We are overdue for a dump run. At least it’s not as much of a problem to store the garbage bags in the old kitchen until we make the trip, this time of year. The garbage bags all freeze. Summer is a whole different story but, barring the vehicle troubles like we had last summer, we can make the dump run more often in the summer.

The dump is open for longer hours today, so I plan to head out this afternoon. First to the dump, then to the pharmacy. My husband told me he needed more insulin by Saturday (today). What he neglected to tell me is that he’d already called it in. If I’d known that, I would have picked it up before getting Soot Sprite from the vet!

Communication? What’s that? 😆

Anyhow.

Now that the vehicle lane in the inner yard is cleared, I’m hoping the much warmer weather we’re supposed to start getting next week will have some actual melt and clear even more. When we do our big shopping at the end of the month, I want to be able to get as close to the house as possible to unload! Using the wagon to drag load after load from the garage through snow covered paths, as we’ve done the past few winters, is not fun at all!

Warming up

While it’s still -23 or -24C right now, with no wind chill, our high today is supposed to be a balmy -15C this afternoon. By the middle of next week, we are supposed to reach highs just below freezing!

For well insulated cats like Brussel, here, it doesn’t seem to make much difference how cold it gets! The less fluffy cats prefer to hang out in the cat house or the sun room. 🌞

My goodness, Brussel does look permanently angry, though! 😆

Speaking of warming up, the upside cats were so happy to have access to my room – and bed! – again last night! My attempt at napping before getting Soot Sprite was disrupted by their antics, so I was really flagging. I finally gave up and went to bed at 8:30, which is insanely early for me. I barely got under the covers before I was surrounded by cats snuggling against me, with 2 or 3 right on me. Butterscotch was in her usual corner on my bed again – she quite enjoyed her night with only Soot Sprite in the room, and wasn’t impressed that they were allowed in. She did allow Cheddar to cuddle next to her, while she used my hand as a pillow, and even tolerated our greasy grandma slithering off my hip and squeezing herself between them and my face, demanding pets. She is a skinny cat, and likes to take advantage of all the body heat she can borrow!

Unfortunately, she makes the most disgusting noises while grooming. 😆

I was so tired, though, I still managed to fall asleep and stay asleep until about 5:30! I can’t remember the last time I got more than 4 or 5 hours of sleep in one stretch.

That I managed to fall asleep at all, never mind sleep all night, is very unusual!

As for Soot Sprite, he commandeered my daughter and slept in her arms for a couple of hours. My daughter is, unfortunately, paying for all the squirming and crawling around under the kitchen sink the other day, and couldn’t lift her arms above her shoulders, then got stuck cuddling the little voidling for hour. He’s another one that has to borrow body heat from others!

I look forward to things warming up again.

The Re-Farmer

Dropped off

Well, Soot Sprite is at the vet right now, getting his nibs nipped.

While we are expected to reach a relatively mild -18C this afternoon, it was -23C with a windchill of -29C when I headed out to start the truck and let it warm up, first.

I am so grateful to have a garage!

Original source unknown.

Normally, we’d plug in the block heater if overnight temperatures are expected to drop below -20C. With the truck needing to have the cord replaced, I would have waited until the afternoon before going anywhere.

The truck started just fine, though, and had no issues with the drive in.

I was concerned the Soot Sprite might be too small for the procedure, but he weighed in at just over 5 pounds. With so many bigger cats, he feels like a feather. I honestly wasn’t sure if he was over 2 pounds, which is typically the minimum weight they prefer.

Oh!! I just got a text from the clinic! Everything went well and he is resting. Pick up time is at 2pm!

Considering no one else was there besides staff when I dropped him off, and I dropped him off a bit early, they most have got started on his as soon as I left!

One down, several more to go! The February spay clinic will have Soot Sprite’s siblings and The Beast (who is as tiny as he is) and Wolf Man (who is not tiny at all!). I’m more comfortable bringing The Beast in, now that I know Soot Sprite weighed what he did.

I wonder if I can get away with a nap before picking him up. I was awake most of the night. Butterscotch and Soot Sprite enjoyed being in my room, without the other cats. The other cats, unfortunately, where either clawing at my door, or all over my younger daughter as she tried to sleep.

I’ll try for a nap. I don’t want to be falling asleep while driving to bring Soot Sprite home!

The Re-Farmer

Finally fixed!

The hot water tap on our kitchen faucet has been dripping for quite a while.

When we replaced the entire tap and faucet set, choosing a design that allowed us to fit out large stock pot under it, the cold water connector hose needed replacing. There is a lack of shut-off valves in our plumbing, so when I got a new connector hose, I made sure to get the type with a built-in shut-off valve, and hot one for the hot water, too.

The hot water hose, however, was fine and did not need replacing. So the second new hose, with the shut-off valve, was set aside.

You probably see where this is going.

In order to fix the leaking tap, we would have to close the main shut-off valve from the pressure tank. Which means no water for the house.

Which is why the drip didn’t get fixed.

We even took advantage of it and would put containers that needed to soak before washing, under the drip, where the container would soon be filled.

The drip, however, has been getting worse and eventually became more of a trickle than a drip.

So the first thing that needed to be done was to replace the connector hose with the new one with the built-in shut-off valve. That way, the hot water to the dripping tap could be closed, but the rest of the house could still have water.

Of course, this was not an easy job. It should have been, but it wasn’t.

You see, someone – most likely my mother, in her younger days – painted the inside of the cupboard under the sink.

Including the copper water pipes.

And the connectors.

My daughter had to cut through what turned out to be layers of paint to cut the copper pipe. The connector hose may still be good, but it’s painted into place. This was old, oil based paint, too, which gives an idea of how long it’s been there!

Once the connector hose was cut off, she then spent at least half an hour trying to scrub the paint off the end of the pipe, as well as smooth the inside edges of the pipe, which were too jagged from being freshly cut, to install the new connector hose.

My daughter is the only person in the household physically able to crawl under there, but she’s pretty broken, too, so it was quite painful. All I could do was hand her things and keep the kittens away.

It did get done, though. I turned the main water back on so it could be tested, and everything worked.

She could finally shut off just the hot water, and start taking the tap apart.

This is the cartridge she pulled out, AFTER I scrubbed it in the bathroom sink.

The part between the two black O rings was completely black, like what is still in the crevices of the white plastic. The metal inside the hole is supposed to be silver.

When we shock the hot water tank with hydrogen peroxide, which requires shutting the water off to the hot water tank and partially draining it, the water runs black when we next use it. Not only was this cartridge all black, but the space it sat in was all black, too. My daughter cleaned out as much of that as she could, while I cleaned the cartridge.

There was the possibility that it would stop leaking after getting all cleaned up, so after I took a picture of the cartridge, plus the numbers on the bottom, she put it all back together, and turned the water on.

There was nothing.

She turned on the cold.

Nothing.

She had mentioned that the pressure was low when she first tested it, but now, nothing was getting through at all. In fact, she had thought I’d turned the main shut-off valve, off again.

On a hunch, I started taking off the end of the faucet, where the aerator is.

Though the taps were off, water started to spray out as I unscrewed it! Once I got it off, we could see the problem. The screen inside was completely full of black gunk!!

Without the aerator, suddenly water could flow again!

I went and scrubbed the aerator in the bathroom sink while my daughter fiddled with the kitchen sink.

Once the aerator was returned, we ran the hot water for a bit, then shut it off.

Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

*sigh*

Well, it was worth a shot. At least it wasn’t a trickle anymore.

After all that, my daughter went to shower while I headed into town.

There are 2 hardware stores in town. One, I won’t go to anymore, after they kicked me out for being medically exempt from wearing a mask during the illegal lockdowns and mask mandates. (Yes, they actually were illegal, and there are many court cases going through the system now. I don’t think the governments have won one, yet.) I didn’t even want to go into the store to shop, but had gone to the cash desk by the doors to pay for a car wash. The location got blacklisted as unsafe to go to by many others who could not wear masks. After how badly they treated their loyal customers, none of us are going back there anymore.

The other hardware store, however, was fantastic, so I go there all the time now, even though they are a smaller store and have a much smaller inventory.

When I got there, I had someone offering to help me right away, and I showed her the picture of what I needed. She found the part for me on the shelf. The package number was different from the number on the cartridge itself, but they were in clamshell packages, making them easy to open and confirm the numbers there. To my shock, one cartridge cost almost $25!!

Then she realized it was a Moen product.

Moen has a lifetime guarantee on their products.

Which means I should be getting a replacement cartridge for free.

She ended up getting the manager over to talk to me about it. It turns out they have a stock of replacement parts that are sent to them for free, to be used for these sorts of times. What was on the shelf is stuff they have to pay for, so they couldn’t give those out.

He looked in their supply, but they did not have the cartridge I needed.

He then recommended I try the other hardware store, or another place I’d never been to before. As far as I knew, they were mostly a lumber and landscaping place.

When I said I wouldn’t go to the first place, he didn’t even blink, and said to try the other place. I’ve had this manager help me a number of times, and I get the impression he hears that a lot.

Well, I’ve been wanting to check this place out for a while, and if they had plumbing supplies, this was as good a time as any.

Oh.

My.

Goodness.

This is going to be a dangerous place for me to go to, with money!

Yes, their focus is definitely on their huge yard, filled with lumber and landscaping supplies. The store itself is relatively small, but covers all the bases for basic hardware supplies. I had no idea there was a third hardware store in town! And I’ve known about this place for years. I’ve even gone to their website, which turned out basically be a single splash page.

I didn’t see the cartridges I needed in their plumbing section, so I went to the counter. I explained what I needed, and that the other hardware store thought they might have inventory of the free replacement part I needed.

It took him a while, but he did find the part. He’d never had to check the number on the cartridge itself before, and they are darn hard to see when you can’t open the packaging!

Then he asked me how many I needed. I’d hoped to buy a spare, until I’d seen the $25 price tag, so I told him I needed one, but if I could have a spare, that would be great!

So he gave me two! Since I didn’t have the packaging product number, he said to try it out, and if it didn’t fit, bring it back and he’d help find the right one.

He was really nice about it, too.

That done, I ran a couple more errands, then headed home. As soon as everything was put away, my daughter started on the tap.

Which was easy to do, now that it has its own shut off valve!

It took some fussing, but she got it in and put back together. Then there was the test!

She ran the water for a bit, then shut off the tap.

Drip.

Nothing! It’s fixed!!

It was a big, messy, painful and frustrating job for my daughter, but she got it done. I’m so grateful for her being able to do it. Otherwise, we would have had to call in a plumber to replace that connector hose, or keep having to shut off the main water valve and leaving it off until it was fixed.

She did a great job!

As for me, I want to get a look at that aerator and see if I can take it apart to clean it, like we have to do with the one in the bathroom. That one builds up with scale and rust. This one would have that, too, but now we know the black stuff that’s in the pipes after we shock the hot water tank is more of a problem in the kitchen.

Ah, the joys of being on a well! 😆

Winter fur, and updates

Would you look at this gorgeous lady!

She still will not let us near her.

I want to burrow into that fur!!

I just got back in from morning rounds. We are at -27C right now, but the windchill is at -29C. I’d really love for those winds to die down! I had to clear a bunch of paths, not because we got much snow last night, but because the winds filled them in with hard packed drifts.

I got through to my mother about coming over today, and brought up about her saying she would be willing to climb into the truck. She told me she checked and has enough cash, so we can try when it is warmer.

So… spring??

No matter, for now. As long as I get her groceries. Going to the bank is the one thing I can’t do for her!

I want to talk to our mechanic, in person, about my mother’s car, but we won’t have any budget for repairs for a while. I’m considering putting the insurance on hold until we can get it in, which likely won’t be until the spring. The truck and other things have priority in the budget. After having to cancel my husband’s eye appointment at the last minute because we were at -30C with no block heater, my husband really wants to get that done.

Of course, it can’t be a generic cord. GM has their own cord with a built-in thermostat that has to be used. Generic ones won’t work right. Which I would prefer, anyhow. Our van had one of those, and I liked it. These cords shut themselves on and off as needed, so you don’t have it heating constantly. I just got a text this morning with an estimate. Replacing the cord will cost under $100. Replacing the block heater part, however, would cost almost $300. !! As far as we know, it’s just the cord that needs replacing, since finding the plug ripped off the end.
