Getting Creative

I got the desk and computer set up in my “new” office. This is where the satellite cable comes through the wall.

Before moving the desk, the router was set up on top of a couple of boxes to get a stronger signal.  We still had to set up our signal booster in the master bedroom.  After moving the desk, I put a folding table that will eventually be a work/photography space, in the corner. The router was moved to the table, propped up on the boxes again.  Before going to bed, I popped an unpacked box on the table.  This morning, my husband found that box was enough to disrupt the signal.  It seemed just having it more in the corner was causing signal strength issues, too.

So we got creative and did this.

It looks awful, but it works, so who cares?

The girls have been joking about the squid on the wall since they saw it.  Especially since neither of them had their glasses.

Update: our router now has a name. Benevolent Internet Bot.

Casualty of the Move?

Well, after many attempts, it looks like we have a confirmed casualty of the move.

My husband’s desktop computer.

It came with us in the van, in the same box as my own.  We hooked mine up to the TV because it is newer and could connect to the Bluetooth keyboard.  As my daughter moved her system upstairs, he borrowed her keyboard and tried his.

It won’t even start up. It turns on, then just spins. It never gets past the point where the logo first appears.

Several more attempts have been made.  We even found the box with the keyboards and monitor stands.

Nothing.

We are unsure of the cause.  It was working fine before we packed it.

This really sucks.

Meanwhile, I need to put a priority on setting up my office and inventory.  I need to print out a shipping label and mail off a purchase.

We have Internet!

I am now posting this using our new internet connection!

The top speed is supposed to be 10mbps, but the guy says average is 6-8mbps. My husband has a speed tested on his phone.

He was getting 14.

Yay!

We still need to be careful, as our plan maxes out at 100g of data per month. So no World of Warcraft. But my daughter will be able to upload her art.

Now we can reduce the extremely expensive data plan on our phones that we were using to connect with (only my husband’s LG phone got a strong enough connection for the WiFi hot spot).

No more waving our phones around in the corner of the living room, trying to get a signal.

I’m so excited! Finally!!!

Try Again

Today will be our third attempt to get internet.  The installer should be here within the next hour or so.

With the living room carpet done, we have started to put things where we intend them to stay.  The tv still needs to be set up again, though that will be changed when our console arrives.  I just cleared the table it was on, of my big umbrella tree. Before I even put it down, the table became occupied. Lol

Mine, now.

Also, it turns out we almost have satellite tv.

We got an unexpected visit from my brother to work on our hot water problem.  It took much longer than anticipated.  We actually had sparks flying in the breaker panel and the hot water tank. Continue reading

No Internet… yet

So the guy came out and did a site survey.

He couldn’t get a signal.

That spruce grove that protects our home from severe winds and snow build up, also prevents us from getting any signal at all. We would need to get at least a 60 ft tower.

Since all our money is going to pay for the movers, we don’t have the $1000 or so that it would cost.

My husband is on the phone now with a satellite based company. It will be more limited, but my daughter will be able to work again. That’s the most important thing right now.

Oh, and that breaker is still giving us issues.  So we have sporadic hot water.

Of all the problems we expected to have, trees blocking internet options and lack of hot water were not among them.

Good Times…

So for the last twenty years or so, I’ve been at the he center of everything technological. Cell phones? I had the original brick, the palm pilot, a series of Blackberries, etc. Computers? I remember paying $1700 for a brand new *True Blue* computer with less processing power than my current watch. The true blue label indicated an “authentic IBM and not one of those evil clones that would come to dominate later.

Flash forward to today. Our new home has no cell coverage, no internet access so far, though we’re still working through that particular hurdle and I’m finding more and more excuses to come down to the local town’s Timmie’s to enjoy actual connectivity… (not that I’m going through withdrawal… I can quit anytime… I just don’t want to is all.

Oh, and if you look closely on the right, by the water bottle, you’ll notice my latest acquisition. It’s a phone modem. You see, The laptop I brought with me is relatively up to date, so it’s never even heard of dial up. I actually had to go looking for this thing fairly deeply.

The good side of all of this is that I’m *much* closer to family, on both sides, I’m getting a chance to say hi to one or two <COUGHSEVENCOUGH> barn cats and I’m catching up on some reading I’ve been putting off for a long time.

All in all, Life is good :)

The Best Laid Plans…

Our decision to move to the farm was not an easy one.

BeepBeep

My husband popped back into the house for a moment, came out to find his walker occupied. One of the farm’s semi-feral cats, now named Beep Beep, likes walkers.

Before we could even say yes to moving at all, we had to make sure changing provinces would not affect my husband’s disability payments.  He is, after all, still considered employed.  It took some time for the answer to come through – apparently, no one had asked the person he spoke to this question before.  Then, just to confuse things, his employer changed their insurance provider.  Because he was already on long-term disability, anything to do with his injury, such as physio, is still with the first company.  But everything else, such as his prescriptions, dental coverage and my own coverage, is now with another company.

In the end, we did find out that we would still be covered the same if we moved to another province.

So after several months, this past spring, we could finally tell my mother that yes, we could move into the old farm-house. Continue reading
