Slowww….

A slow day for me today.  So… first, the fun stuff!

I wasn’t around to see if any deer came today, though from the looks of the feeding station, they were certainly here.

So instead, I have a cat picture for you!

20180208DaBoy

DaBoy sure loves the top of the piano!  His mom doesn’t go up there.  She’s not as good of a jumper, and there’s nothing close that she can use to take it in stages.  He was just so adorable, with his face hanging over the edge, I had to get a picture!

Yesterday, I spent a long time stirring a pot to make this…

20180208fudge

It is a delicious failure.  I’d doubled the recipe for a type of cream fudge I’d made recently, and I just didn’t cook it down long enough, I think, even though I’d cooked it for at least 45 minutes, stirring constantly.  It’s an attempt to recreate a type of Polish cream fudge that is so addictive.  It has a unique texture that is hard to match, and this doesn’t match it at all.  Leaving it overnight to cool and set didn’t change the texture as much as I’d expected. It still tastes great, though!

Once I’ve got it worked out, I will share the recipe.

Oh, dear!  One of my daughters just came by to share with me something that had happened upstairs.  They were talking and when she laughed, her sister could actually see her breath!

It’s just a touch chilling up there!!!

They moved the heater into the room they were in.

That upstairs needs a lot of work.

Meanwhile…

Today, I focused on doing something I have been letting stew in my brain for a while; figuring out what to do about the Co-op withholding our shares.  That resulted in my spending what ended up being about 4 hours, working on a letter.  Doing it meant having to revisit a pretty traumatic time, and has left me feeling drained.  Then after a break to help with the bread baking, I went back to it to add in something I’d forgotten, then go over it for typos.  It was difficult, and I am recognizing the damage living there has done to me, and that even though we don’t live there anymore, it is still affecting my mental health.

Now that I’ve written it, though, I have to do something with it.

I am not looking forward to it.

Moving away from there was supposed to end this toxic garbage.  Ah, well.  I’ve never been one to avoid doing the right thing, just because it’s difficult.

Must. Hold. The Kitty!

I have my van back!  Yay!

It was all I could do not to take a drive to the city, just because we can.

My cousin did a wonderful job.  Not only did he replace the water pump for me, but he noticed the power steering was sounding wrong, so he checked it out, too.  After topping it up (it was low again, yet he could find no sign of a leak.  I checked our garage after the van was gone and saw no signs of power steering fluid leaking, either) he got some air out of the system, which is something that might have been causing the noise it was making.

Since he had to take the belt off to work on the water pump, that’s on nice and tight now, too, so it shouldn’t be making noises anymore, either.

My engine.  She purrs.

Speaking of purrs…

My daughter and I drove my brother’s van back to his place.  He wasn’t home, so we stayed to visit his dog (who wouldn’t even sniff my hand, but did let my daughter skritch him a bit) and the outside cats that came to check us out.

Including one I’ve never seen before.

The others weren’t friendly at all, but this guy?

All. Over. Us!

What a sweetie!

Also, apparently, out hands taste very good, because he sure liked licking them!

Catching Up

I spent almost no time at all at the desktop, so I only managed to upload the one video from my phone, yesterday.  Alas, I was only able to get a couple of cat pictures at our feeding station with the Nikon before it died again, but I did get some other photos on my phone.  I wasn’t able to process any until today, though.  So I’ll just catch up now. :-)

The big news is that the moving company paid up!  We are now DONE with them!  I’ve sent off an email to the electrician we got the quote from to start arrangements.  I don’t know how often he checks his email, though, so I’ll follow up with a phone call today.  Even if it can’t be done until the spring, we have the money for it now, which is SUCH a relief.

It was another thoroughly entertaining day at the feeding station again.  It started out with Hungry Girl and Barbecue enthusiastically running over, Hungry Girl in the lead.

20180206.two.deer

It makes me happy to see her increased energy.  I like to think that the food that we are leaving out, in a safe location, is helping her get healthier.  I still wonder about the relationship between her and Barbecue, and why they are pretty much always together, even when Barbecue keeps striking at her with his hooves to drive her off.  At least now, she mostly just moves to another pile of feed.  Another thing I’m glad we started to do – put the feed out in many small piles, instead of one big pile.  Hungry Girl seems to be more comfortable going to the ones closer to the house than Barbecue.

20180206.5cats

The next time I saw major activity out there was when there where 5 cats in the feed!  Then I saw 3 of them were after a mouse and was able to get the video I posted yesterday.  There have been a few times when I’ve seen one of the cats bringing a tiny vole with it when I put their food out, or the remains of one by the food bowls outside, but this is the first time I’ve seen them go after something as big as that mouse.

Eventually, only The Hand kept after the mouse.  As I worked in my crochet corner, I could see her sitting there, then start batting at something in the snow.  Then I would see the mouse moving around a bit.  It seemed to figure out that if it didn’t move, The Hand would leave it alone longer.  At one point, I thought she was sitting right on it.  At another, I saw her suddenly leap into the air, clearly having been bit by the mouse.

Then Mama and the twins came by.

As you can see in the photo with the cats, there wasn’t much food left for them by then.  It took them quite a long time to get to it at all, though.

It was a standoff!

20180206deer.cat.standoff

(I look forward to when it’s warm enough to properly clean the windows on the outside!)

The Hand is the cat closest to the trees on the right.  I can’t tell if that’s Butterscotch or Beep Beep beside her.

The deer were all nervous about the cats, stamping their hooves into the ground and throwing their heads.

The cats?

Not the least bit intimidated.

Eventually, only The Hand was there, playing around with the poor mouse, completely ignoring the deer.  Mama and the twins eventually worked their way around to the feed, but it took them quite a long time.  They didn’t stay long.  After a while, The Hand got tired of the mouse and left, then Trüllbus took over, eventually finally eating the poor mouse.

It was quite the thing to watch while I worked.  I FINALLY finished off a double ended crochet potholder I was making.  The stitch I was using makes for a very thick fabric, but it also, unfortunately, stresses the hand and causes pain in the palm under the thumb.  I found I had to set it aside for days at a time.  I regularly do the recommended stretches and exercises to prevent injury (yes!  There is such a thing as crochet injuries!), but sometimes, the only thing that can be done is to put it away.

Among the other things that got accomplished yesterday was to drop our van off at my cousin’s, so he can work on it today.   I look forward to hearing from him soon!  It felt SO good to be driving my own van again, even with the noise the engine was making.

Then I found out my daughters were planning on going into the next town to see The Last Jedi.  The nearest town has a 1 screen theatre, and only 1 showing a night.  Most smaller towns that have movie theatres are basically second run, but this town is considered a resort town, so the owner (someone my husband and I graduated high school with) is able to pick first run movies.

I had wanted to see the new Star Wars movie, too, so I invited myself along.  Unfortunately, my husband’s pain levels were too high for him to join us, too. :-(

We left early, so we could take advantage of the trip into town and run some errands.  My younger daughter and I ran into the grocery store, where I ran into an old friend.  It was funny to hear her describe it to her sister.

“We were walking along when this guy reached out and touched Mom on the shoulder.  I thought it was weird, but then Mom hugged him, so I figured it was okay.” :-D

It was really good to see him again, and I finally got to meet his girlfriend in person, too.  Funny how you can be friends with someone on Facebook for years, without ever meeting them face to face.  Then, when you finally do, it doesn’t feel like meeting a stranger at all.

It turned out to be a really good thing I’d come along for the movie, though.  For all our searched online, we couldn’t find out what the admission cost was (turned out to be $10), but when we got to the ticket booth (with my old Math and Law teacher behind the glass!), we discovered they didn’t take debit.  Cash only!  Which, thankfully, I had, since I’d gotten cash to pay my cousin for the new water pump he’s going to install for me.

Somehow, I thought they wouldn’t have at least gotten a debit machine after all these years!

The movie was quite enjoyable.  It’s our first moving outing since well before the move.

A nice end to the day.

As for today, I’m mostly waiting on word from my cousin to pick up our van.  I should probably move my phone to someplace where I can get some signal, in case he chooses to text me again.

20180207.2.whitetail

Meanwhile, we’ve already had a very enthusiastic visit from Hungry Girl and Barbecue again.  We also got a visit from a woodpecker!  A “hairy woodpecker”, I believe the variety is called. No chance of a photo, though.  They’re not attracted to seeds, so it was quite a surprise to see one at one of the piles, even if it was for just a few seconds.

Hmm.  I wonder if Mama and the twins will be back again today?

A Little More Progress… and not

So today was the day our van was finally going to be fixed.

Except it didn’t.

Turns out there was a miscommunication.

When it was talked about, my cousin had mentioned picking up our van.  This was after I’d mentioned I was concerned about driving it with that grinding noise it was making. I wasn’t sure how he planned to do that, but no alternative was mentioned, so I waited on him to arrive.

Meanwhile, my husband phoned in some prescription refills, plus needed more distilled water for his CPAP.  So I left the keys with him while our younger daughter and I went into the next town to get some non-Costco shopping done at the grocery store, after hitting the pharmacy.  I made sure to text my cousin to let him know about the keys.

It wasn’t until he answered that I found out he’d expected me to have dropped our van off some time ago.

*sigh*

Which means he won’t be able to work on it until Wednesday.

I’ll be bringing our van to him and leaving it there, Tuesday night. :-D

Just a couple of days longer.

Meanwhile, a bit more progress was made with the unpacking.  I should have been working on the boxes in the office, but I decided to continue in the living room, instead.  I was getting tired of looking at the aquarium, all wrapped up in the corner.  So I took off the foam sheets duct taped around the outside, then had to use a stool to be able to get all the accessories from inside the tank and store them in the cabinet under the tank.  Then I could take out the foam pieces that were protecting the inside.

That done, I tucked the lights between the tank and the wall, along with the power bar we’ll eventually be using in that corner.  Got the ironing board put away.  There was also a taped together bundle with an umbrella, 3 shinai and a jo staff.

Curious, I took the stickers to see what these were listed as, on the sheet.

20180121_174912.25%The bundle with the umbrella and shinai was labeled “Anberallas”.  Or maybe it says, “Anherallas”.

The ironing board was listed as “Airlen Board.”

It hurts just to try and type that out. LOL

Now, all I’ve got left in that little corner to get rid of is my sister’s carpet shampooer.  A visit will need to be arranged, after our van is fixed. :-)

The only other thing left in that area that I need to figure out what to do with are the baskets of light bulbs on our piano bench that weren’t supposed to be packed.  They’ll likely just have to go to the basement. :-/

The next step for the area is to get a nimble daughter to climb over the piano and install the antique mirror of my mother’s that matches the piano so well.

We were planning to put some decor items on the piano itself, but one of the cats really loves it up there.  We’ll have to be careful what goes up there!

I’m totally procrastinating over the boxes in my office.  Totally.

We’ve got some progress in another thing that we had a delay on.  We’d done the paperwork to transfer our medicare coverage away from the province we moved out of, to the one we now live in.  We’ve had coverage here before and were even able to include our old health care card numbers.

The forms all came back.

They wanted ID. The girls each got their own form, but the one for myself and my husband had a handwritten note saying that we needed to include copies of ID for all the family.

Thankfully, my younger daughter was able to find her birth certificate that had gone missing – it turned out to be still in the suitcase.

Now it’s just a matter of signing the new form attached to the old ones, and send them in with the photocopies.  At least the postage is pre-paid.

While it doesn’t matter much for our daughters, who have no medical appointments or prescriptions to deal with, it might be an issue for my husband and I.  Our old health care numbers ensure coverage for up to 3 months after moving to another province.  We have doctor’s appointments (I made a “meet and greet” appointment with the same doctor for myself) in the middle of the month.  For me, that’s just a few days after my 3 months is up, but my husband got here 3 weeks earlier, so he’s already past the 3 months.

I’m not sure how that’ll be dealt with.

For the non-Canadians reading this, Canada’s medicare system is federally funded through our tax dollars, but provincially managed.  Each province is slightly different than others.  While the basics, like regular check ups, treatment, hospital visits, most medical tests, and specialists are covered, some things covered in one province might not be covered, or only partly covered, in another.  For example, when my husband was first diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea, we were living in this province, and the CPAP machine, humidifier, hoses and masks were fully covered.  After we moved, however, there was 0 coverage.  We’ve come back just in time for this province to change from full coverage to partial coverage.

Thank God for private insurance!

Yes, we in Canada do still need private insurance.  Especially for dental, eye care and prescriptions, which isn’t covered by our medicare system.  I know of one province that also has its own “pharmacare” for prescriptions.  There is a deductible, then the province covers the rest.

In a nut shell, we have medical coverage, but it isn’t “free”; we just pay for it through our taxes, like a group insurance program.  Some provinces also charge premiums.

It also isn’t universal as, while certain essentials are covered, each province maintains its own services.

It also isn’t all government run.  While there are certainly provincial health care clinics with both medical and support staff, many of which also include labs for blood-work and equipment for Xrays, we also have private doctors with private clinics (they bill the government for covered services), and private companies that provide a mix of services that can be covered by the government, private insurance or the patient gets billed.

Which can make things pretty convoluted, when you have complex health concerns, as my husband does.  Most of his medical care is covered by our medicare system, and the rest by private insurance.  So far, the doctors have managed to keep his prescriptions among those that are covered by private insurance.  Thankfully, my husband has a very good plan, so there’s a long list of approved prescriptions.

Did I mention, Thank God for private insurance?

I think I’ll just say it again, anyways.

Thank God for private insurance!

Five!

This morning, things were quiet at our feeding station.  Basically, just a few birds.  Then, after I put more feed out, I was able to get this shot…

2018-02-05.butterscotch

Butterscotch, in the middle of a pile of seeds, watching the birds flying in and out around her.

Sadly, those were the last photos our Nikon was able to get today.  Though I took more shots, and some even showed up on the preview screen, as they normally do when they’re saved to the memory card, none were actually there when I looked at the card. So even when it seemed to be working, the camera wasn’t working.

Which left me using my phone for any other shots I managed to get when the deer arrived, shortly before noon.

My goodness, what a show!

I could see some movement through the spruces, into the garden, letting me know that a deer was coming.  Then, as that one started dashing around the edge of the trees by the garden, I could see more.  Soon, there were FIVE deer, all running over around the corner of the spruce grove!

Hungry Girl had been in the lead, but the other four soon drove her off.  She stayed by the compost pile near the garden for a while, as Barbecue, Mama and the twins began eating.  Then Mama chased away Barbecue, who went over by Hungry Girl and stayed.  After a while, Barbecue started come come closer, only to get chased away by one of the twins!  As if that wasn’t surprise enough, Hungry Girl not only stood her ground, but chased the twin.  It worked out to chasing it back to the feed, but still, it was good to see Hungry Girl standing up for herself.

20180205.five.deer

Farthest away on the left, Hungry Girl, with Barbecue nearby.  At the feed, the twins are in front, while Mama is behind one of them.

Then Mama chased them both off.

Over the next while, there was all sorts of back and forthing, as the deer chased each other to assert dominance (Mama is the Alpha.  No question!).  Then I saw the twins running around, thinking at first that they were going after Hungry Girl and Barbecue, but no.  They were just playing!

Eventually, Mama and the twins left, and Hungry Girl came running in for her turn at the feed.  Barbecue came around, too, and started to chase her off, but she instead moved to another pile of feed, and they ate together.

It was just incredible to watch them!

My husband and I are now talking about getting a motion sensor camera outside, to record some of the activity out there.  It was something I’d considered already; a system something like what my older brother has around his out.  Plus a remote control gate!  If we set one up at the corner of the house by the living room window, we should be able to get all kinds of cool activity. :-)

All in good time.

Things quieted down when the feed was pretty much gone.  The birds still found enough to come back.

Then this guy showed up.

20180205.little.deer

This tiny little guy was very shy and nervous coming over, alone.  After looking closely at the photos, this is either a new visitor, or one of the twins, come back on its own.

Either way, it’s so cool!!!!

Vanilla Sugar

This is one of the things I tried a few years back and now keep handy all the time.  Making vanilla sugar is super easy, too.  I keep mine in a quart jar in the cupboard, and when it starts to run low, I just top it up with more sugar, give it a shake, and leave it for a while before using it again.

vanilla.sugar

Ingredients for 1 quart jar

1 vanilla bean pod
granulated sugar, to fill

Take the vanilla pod and carefully cut into it, lengthwise, to split it open.  Cut the entire pod into 3 or 4 pieces.

Pour sugar, with cut up pod pieces, into the jar, leaving an inch or two of head space.  Seal the jar tightly, then shake thoroughly to distribute the pod pieces throughout.

Set jar aside for a week before using.  Shake occasionally.

If you wish to use the sugar in baking, which can be done to replace vanilla in a recipe that uses both vanilla and granulated sugar, make up a larger batch.  If you went up to a gallon (4L) size container, two vanilla bean pods would be enough.

The vanilla bean pods will continue to flavour the sugar for a long time, as fresh sugar is added to the jar to refill.  I’ve had mine for about 3 years, give or take a few months, and am just now thinking of refreshing the vanilla bean pieces.  I rarely use it for baking, but then, we don’t bake sweets very often.  Instead, I keep a separate sugar bowl for vanilla sugar on the table for our tea.

That’s it!  Easy peasy!

Stocking Up for the Month

This morning, I got word that the parts for our van are in, but the work won’t be done until Monday.

I had hoped to do our big monthly shop with our own vehicle instead of my brother’s.  We aren’t out of food, but running low on things and have made a few trips into the next town to get enough to tide us over.

Unfortunately, doing that is murder on the budget.

My husband and I headed into town earlier in the day – his first real outing in some weeks – and were able to trade in his sharps container.  I had to decide whether or not to make the trip into The City, though.  Costco isn’t open on Sundays, so it had to be today, or we’d pick up some more “tide us over” stuff before coming home, then do the big shopping on Monday.  Assuming the van can be worked on early in the day.  Which I don’t know.  If it didn’t get worked on until evening, the shopping would be done on Tuesday.

So it was decided to use my brother’s van for another trip to The City, today.  The only thing we picked up on the way home was a couple of bags of deer feed, which only cost $12 each.  I considered picking up more bird feed, too – we’ve still got half a bag – but decided to check out what Costco had.

We’ve been working on an extensive list for the past while, knowing that we won’t actually be able to get all of it.  It all depended on what was left of the food budget.  So after double checking the numbers, both girls joined me for the 1 1/2 hour drive to Costco.  We didn’t go to the closest one, because it sucks – very tiny, terribly designed parking lot, and very hard to get in and out of.  There’s a third one we will check out one of these days, but not on this trip.

So to give an idea of what we get when stocking up for a month, here is a list of what we actually got, as opposed to what was on the list.

Dry cat food – three large bags (for the outside cats)
Wet cat food – 1 large case (for the inside cats, to supplement their dry cat food)
Bird seed – their bag of songbird mix was only about $11; cheaper than the local, single variety seed, bags, but also smaller.
Cat litter
large package of yeast
Milk – 4L homo milk (none of this low fat/no fat stuff! *L*)
Whipping cream – 1L
Butter – 6 pounds
Old Cheddar cheese – one of the giant blocks
Hummus – 2 pack
Peanut butter
Eggs – 5 dozen package
Frozen berries
Frozen vegetable mix
Rye bread – 2 loaf pack (for a baking break!  Plus, I haven’t found a place to buy rye flour, yet)
Tortilla wraps – the big pack of plain wraps
Tortilla chips
Potatoes – 20lb bag of Russets
Carrots – 10 lb bag
Sweet Potatoes – 3 lb bag
Yellow onions – large sack (can’t remember the weight)
Meats.  For this, it’s based on whatever is cheap or on sale.  This time, we got pork breakfast sausages, honey and garlic fresh sausages, a pork loin (aka a meat slug), beef stew, lean ground beef, ground pork, ground turkey, pork roasts (package of 2), pork chops (pork tends to be cheap, so we get a lot of that).  For the bigger package/cuts, they get broken down into smaller pieces to last at least a couple of days.
Laundry detergent
Shampoo/Conditioner
Toilet paper
Tax software
Package of 6 giant, super colorful, gorgeous mugs.  Like we need more mugs!  But they were only $20, and my daughter said she’d pay me back.  Not that I intend to let her!

The grand total was just over $530, but I also had my rebate coupon, which finally came to the right address, so that took off just over $90, leaving me with a grand total of just under $440.

What we DIDN’T get, that was on the list.

Cold drinks; I was hoping to get at least a case of V8.  We also sometimes get a case of Coke Zero.  No room in the flat cart, and for this month, not really room in the budget for it, either.  At some point, I want to stock up on canned drinks, just so I have something to offer visitors besides tea.
Coffee; my older daughter is the only coffee drinker, and she said she still had enough.
Flour; again, we ran out of room on the flat cart.  I’ve also found it at a better (sale) price at the regular grocery store we go to, so we’ll get more from there again, instead.
Crackers; need to have something for the hummus, right?  No room.  We do try to have some sort of snacks or treats, as much for the psychological benefits of having a “treat” as for the actual snack.
Olives; my husband had asked me to get nacho fixings – I got the chips, but didn’t see their big containers of green olives.  Not that we had room for it, anymore.  I’ll pick up a smaller jar from the regular grocery store, instead.
Black olives; for more bread baking.  Will be purchased at the regular grocery store.
Oil; I had intended to get a Costco sized container of vegetable oil, because of all the baking we’re doing, but not only did we run out of room, I never found the size I was interested in.
Popcorn; dang.  Completely forgot that one.  Not that we had room for it.
Canned tomato soup; we like to have canned soups for those days when we need to make something quick, or want something light for a late night snack.  It also works well as an ingredient.  No room.  Mushroom soup and New England Clam Chowder are also canned soups we like to pick up every now and then.
Apples; for things like fresh fruit and vegetables, we tend to get them at the regular grocery store, rather than Costco.  Their quantities are usually too large for our needs, and we’d rather get smaller amounts with more variety than giant bags of things.  Now that we have a root cellar, though, I was able to get the large bags of potatoes, carrots and onions.  They will be okay for the month.
Rice; we still have some, so it can wait this time around, but when we do get more, we like to get Basmati rice.

For the list of things we didn’t get, we likely won’t be able to get much of it this month, anyhow, for budgetary reasons.  As long as we have the basics and ingredients, we manage without.  We also already had a good stock of things like soup, toothpaste, dish detergent, etc.  Other personal grooming/hygiene products will have to wait for either a Walmart trip, the next time we go to The City, or the regular grocery store.  We might be able to get better prices in The City, but not enough to warrant the cost of gas to make the drive.

Next month, I hope to have enough room in the budget to hit a Bulk Barn for things we are starting to run low on.  I prefer to go there for dried goods, as they tend to have a greater variety of choices.  It’s always handy to have things like split peas, lentils, barley, etc.  Especially for slow cooker meals.

So with the big monthly trip, plus supplemental shopping later in the month (we’ll for sure need to pick up more eggs and milk by mid month, for example), we’ll be spending about $700 total, for the 4 of us.  Normally, my budget would be higher, but those “tide us over” trips kyboshed that pretty good. :-(

That’s food, household goods, personal hygiene products, pet supplies, and extras, like the software and those mugs we got, for 4 people, for 1 month.

What I find interesting about that is going back to what I read at Dining with Donald and his Joe Average Buys Groceries challenge.  This is based on the statistic that the average Manitoba spends $241 per month for food.  Times that by 4 and, for our household, that would be $964 average for just food, per month.

I honestly can’t remember the last time we even had a budget for that much food for the 4 of us for one month.  At our highest, we were spending about $1200 a month for everything we got at the grocery store/Costco.  Taking off for non-food items, it was probably more like $800 a month, average.

I’m not sure if that’s “good” or “bad”. :-D
