Critter of the day, plus apples for my mother

Yesterday I was finally able to grab the step ladder and pick some of the last apples that are pick-able for my mother.

The cats were VERY interesting in the bag! Especially Cheddar! :-D

I was able to pick all the crabapples from the one tree, where the apples were the biggest and they had finally gotten sweet. Previously, they had almost no taste at all; not even the usual sour taste of crabapples, but now they have that delightful sweet/sour taste crabapples are the best for. There weren’t very many, so I picked some from the tree next to it. You can really tell which apples came from which tree! This tree had quite a lot of little apples that are more sour, but still quite edible.

Since I was there, anyhow, I took advantage of the ladder and cut away dead branches. The one tree with the bigger apples has a main trunk that is basically dead, but I did see some leaves on some of the branches at the top, so I just cut away the ones I knew for sure were dead. I pruned dead branches off a couple other trees, too, but I will save a major pruning for the spring.

I was able to bring the crabapples to my mother pretty much right away, and even get a little visit in. She was very happy to see them. Usually, there is someone who leaves their extra apples in the lobby where she lives, free to whomever wants them, but there were none this year. So now she will be able to make herself some apple sauce and compote that she likes. I also brought one each of the different flavoured jellies I’d made. I even remembered to bring an extra knife sharpener we has, as she was looking for one while we were out before. She was looking for a file, actually, so I brought her what I thought would be much easier for her to use.

I didn’t realize she wanted it for the hoes provided for the little community gardens where she lives. LOL I have, however, discovered that she has a knife sharpener with an antler handle, that matches the meat fork we found here. She tells me there used to be a knife as part of the set, but it’s one of the things that disappeared over the years.

I’m glad I was able to bring the sharpener I have, though. In the process, I discovered my mother has no good knives. At all!

Something to take care of for her, soon!

The cold, meanwhile, is already starting to show.

For the past while, I’ve been doing my rounds in grass sopping wet from dew, but this morning, it was all frost! The furnace has even been turning on regularly during the night.

We still have lots to do before winter!

Critter(s) of the Day: on the beach

Insects count as critters, right?

While walking the beach not long ago, there were a surprising number of lady beetles all over.

So many, in fact, in some places, it was impossible not to step on any.

I also saw a couple of these guys…

At first, I thought this one was dead. Especially when a wave reached its wings and it didn’t move. It wasn’t dead, though, and I was able to move it a short distance, where the waves could no longer reach it.

Critter of the Day: snakes alive!

One good thing about living in the middle of nowhere. When I see a snake on the gravel road, I can stop and shoo it off.

It’s that time of year when the garter snakes are heading north to the dens where they spend the winters. Sadly, many never make it as they try and cross the roads. Especially on the highways. It’s almost impossible to avoid them. Often, they can’t even be seen until it’s too late to even try.

Shroooommmsss!

While bringing food out to the Pump Shack kitten this morning, something in the trees nearby caught my eye.

Some of the biggest tree mushrooms I’ve ever seen have shown up in just the past day or so!

They are bigger than my hand.

As I continued my rounds this morning, I kept an eye out. With the rain we’ve been having lately, I found quite a few more.

Some were quite high up, but large enough to spot quite easily. Others were hidden in holes in trees, but still large enough that I could spot them from below, even when high enough that I had to really stretch to get a photo!

Even another of the maple logs has sprouted a bunch!

These mushrooms are all growing only on maples. None on the elms, spruces, willows, etc. Just maples.

Except this one.

I almost missed it at first, thinking it was a pebble! The stump it is growing on is from an old spruce tree. This mushroom might be a puff ball mushroom. I haven’t seen one of those in many years! I used to see them quite often in one particular area, when I was a kid. My later brother and I used to have a blast, finding the ones that were ready to spawn and stomping on them, causing them to explode in clouds of spawn that would drift away.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this one to see if it really is a puff ball. I hope so.

Critter of the Day: a story in pictures

Lately, Beep Beep has been very aggressive about wanting human attention.

She has very sharp claws!

After we made our trip to my medical appointment yesterday, the girls and I ended up going for a walk-about beyond the outer yard.

Beep Beep followed us.

My friend watches over me

I made one of my rare excursions to the second floor to talk to my daughter. While there, I found myself admiring one of her tiny paintings.

So she gave it to me.

I now have a little friend, watching over me as I type.

I love her robots!

Critter of the Day: just jogging (plus bonus mystery critter)

We haven’t been seeing deer much lately, though as fall approaches, we are starting to see them in the fields as we drive by again.

Once in a rare while, I will see on in the trail cam, going down our driveway and jumping the chain. I haven’t seen any since the gate got replaced.

Until I checked the files, yesterday.

The motion sensor was triggered by this lone deer, jogging down the road! :-D

I also saw something interesting flash by during the night.

Critter of the Day: I know there’s food here, somewhere!

We started leaving food out for Junk Pile Kitten and his mom beside the junk pile, since the other cats crowd around the food bowls by the house, and sometimes chase them away.

Then the other cats discovered we leave food there.

In fact, it’s now become routine for the other kittens to follow me as I put food out, ignoring the food by the house and eating the food being left at the junk pile.

I’ve taken to leaving little piles of food on the ground beside the bowl, and even on the log I’ve set up as a seat. I started doing the same thing by the pump shack, too, since not only have some of the kittens started following me there, so do Butterscotch and Beep Beep!
