Ensured about Insurance

After an hour on the phone yesterday, I have finally dealt with our home insurance.  It’s content insurance only, which is all we can get even here, since we do not own the property.  I cancelled our previous content insurance and, since we left almost 2 months ago, will be getting a credit on that.  We were still paying for an address we weren’t living in anymore.

New content insurance for our current location was set up at the same time.  We now have the same coverage as before, with only minor differences due to location and zoning (we can’t, for example, get sewer back up insurance here.  We have no sewers), and it’s going to cost us about $20 a month less than the new charges would have been with our previous location’s insurance, which was on automatic renewal, and was in the process of rolling over for another year.

Which led me to talking to my older brother, who had to get the property insurance on behalf of my mother, this morning.  Oh, the hoops he had to jump through to get it done!  No company wanted to touch an unoccupied property, for starters, and the amounts things are covered for are woefully inadequate.  No where near replacement value, if something happened.  Not all the buildings are insured, either.  It took him weeks just to get what coverage there is, so this is certainly not a complaint.  Any insurance is better than no insurance.

One of the things we agreed to do in exchange for living here is to take on the expenses of the place, including the insurance.  It will be up for renewal in the spring, so we have some time to figure that out.  A lot will change, with the place being occupied again, but we are also going to make sure there is adequate replacement value coverage.

Among the questions I was asked while getting our content insurance was how old the house was.  I couldn’t actually answer that.  I know the new part was built in the late 70’s, but the original, log cabin part of the house is far older.  I’m trying to figure it out, based on what little I know about when it was first acquired by a family member, then by my father.  It may well be 100 years old!  I wonder who in my family would know?  I’m now very curious.

The important thing is, it’s done.  We’re insured.  As it stands right now, it looks like we’ve got better content insurance than my mother was able to get for property insurance.

Meanwhile, I may have found out about what those seeds were that we’ve been finding in our linen closet and the couch.

My brother wasn’t sure, but his best guess is, it’s poison.  It seems there’s a type of mouse poison you can get that is in seeds that gets put where the mice might go. No photos I’ve been able to find match the seeds I’ve seen, but the pictures I’m finding are all much newer products than this would have been.  They now come in pellets or blocks, and/or are brightly coloured.

This would explain why it was found under the couch cushion, and under the linens, along with the mouse shit. It’s possible that my late father had sprinkled it under the couch cushion, though considering how long the stuff in the linen closet has been sitting there, whoever put it under there did it many, many years ago.

It’s a good thing I was already planning on taking precautions when cleaning up that linen closet.  Also good that I had made sure to vacuum up the seeds that had fallen onto the floor as I took things out of that linen closet so quickly, and that it’s currently so blocked off, the cats can get into it.  They have certainly been trying.

I have to admit.  Poison is not one of the things I expected to deal with while cleaning up and packing.  Not that I didn’t think poison was ever used; I know it was.  I just didn’t expect it to be sprinkled about so generously in the couch and closet.

Really?

As if it wasn’t bad enough my husband hasn’t been able to get one of his prescriptions refilled at all…

He gets one drug in two forms – instant release and extended release.  He was able to get one version, but not the other.

Today, he was going to open the new bottle of the one he got.

They screwed up the dosage.  Each tablet is only 1/3rd the dose it’s supposed to be.

Keep in mind that this is a medication he can only get in 30 day refills, and cannot refill more than a few days in advance of running out.  Not only that, but not all pharmacies have it in stock, or if they do, in only limited amounts.  They have to order in if they need more.

He phoned them up and they will fix it, but they won’t get the proper dosage tablets until Monday, when I will return the bottle he got with the wrong dosage.

I’m not sure he has enough left for two days.

Thankfully, my brother was a sweetheart and, when I asked about borrowing his van on Wednesday to take my husband to see the doctor, he told me to just take it home again and keep it until then.  So I actually have the wheels to go to the next town to take care of the prescription error.

Well, it’ll give me a ch20180113_163318515116999.jpgance to remember to bring the old prescription we found, from 1984, for proper disposal.

Four!!

I knew it was a matter of time before the rest showed up!

Our Lady came back with company today.

white.tail.deer.distance

This deer was at the far end of the garden, and never came any closer.  It is most likely a buck.

We could see the fourth one (pictured above) digging in the snow for forage, beyond the wood pile in the garden, before it moved along the line of shrubs to nibble on some branches.  It kept close watch in all directions in the process.

white.tail.trio

She’s keeping a close eye on me through the window! (You can see part of the window frame on the left, where you can also see a tiny bit of the fourth deer in the top corner.)

white.tail.twins

These are most likely her twins from last spring.

Mama kept a close eye on us in the window, but she seems to be starting to get used to us being there.  As long as we don’t move too quickly, she stays.  Of course, deer are skittish and it doesn’t take much to send them running, but she was quicker to come back, and her dash away is not quite as abrupt as it was when she first started to visit.

And to think that was just a few days ago!

Prescription for Pain

When my husband had his first visit with a new doctor, one of the things he was able to get was a renewed prescription for one of his pain meds.  It comes in two forms; quick and slow release.  Because it’s an opioid, different rules apply.  Only hand written prescriptions, on a triplicate pad, are used, and they get signed for when they are picked up.  My husband had had a 3 month prescription, but could only get 30 days worth at a time.  As his files were to be transferred from his old doctor to the new, he got only a 30 day renewal, and was to book a follow up appointment for a month later.  That would be enough time for his files to get out here.

Well, the two versions aren’t in sync.  He was able to refill one of them right away, then the second one a couple of weeks later. Yesterday, the first one was one of several refills he called in to the pharmacy.  As he’d already used his 30 day renewal and didn’t have anymore refills left, the pharmacy needed to fax the doctor for a refill.  So I made arrangements to borrow my brother’s van to pick them all up today.

Except it still wasn’t there.  The doctor had never responded to the fax.

Even if he had, they could not fill it without the physical prescription.  Previously, the doctor had been able to fax the prescription to the pharmacy, but that’s not good enough, here.  They could get a fax and start it, but would not be allowed to give out the medication without the physical prescription.  This is one of those things that, once the doctor gives out the prescription, it must be brought to the pharmacy within 3 days. The clinic is close enough that the pharmacy can sometimes just send someone out to get it, though, which is good to know.

However, my husband is to see the doctor in less than a week.

Chances are, he’s not going to get the updated prescription until he sees the doctor.

Meanwhile, he’s out of the medication.  It’s one of the primary pain medications he uses.  One version of it is not enough.

Theoretically, he could have phoned the doctor and tried to make arrangements, but then I’d have to borrow the vehicle again to pick it up tomorrow, because it wouldn’t be ready by today.  Then I would need to borrow the vehicle again for the medical appointment a few days later.

What a pain.

For my husband, literally.

Testing Macro

Years ago, when we were more able bodied and had more discretionary funds, we were all quite into photography.  With changing technology, my husband acquired lenses for his smartphone camera.

The lenses are held in place by a magnet that holds it to a metal ring adhered around the phone camera lens. Last night, he placed a spare on my phone and this morning, I tested the macro lens.  This is one of the results.

I later tried to test the larger telephoto lens on the birds at our feed. Unfortunately, the weight of the lens was too much for the adhesive holding the ring in place, and it fell off before I could even zoom in to try for a photo.

I will have to figure something out for that, because I can see myself using at least two of the lenses, regularly.

I rather miss photography.  It would be good if we can get back into it, now that we’ve moved.  Our old equipment still works fine and is more than adequate.

Abundance

Sir Sour Alot got moved temporarily onto our oven recently.  I decided to leave it there after use and feeding, since it is a warmer spot.

What a difference a couple of degrees makes, as it overflowed in abundance.

As I write this, my younger daughter is making some sourdough cookies.  Later, I will transfer the starter out, wash the container, then return it.

And this is why I keep a bowl underneath. :-)

The Typo Demon

Okay, this one is an open thread for my fellow writers.

One of my pet peeves is writing a post, rereading it, editing it, reading it again, editing it again, several times over, hitting publish, reading the post again and…

Discovering more typos I missed.

More irritating than simply missing my own typos is when I write posts using my phone and discovering that my phone’s auto-correct had changed correctly spelled words into another word entirely.  Sometimes, I catch it before I hit post, but other times, I don’t catch it until much later.

Just today, one I caught before publishing, the word “care” was turned into “climate change.”  One I missed, “deceiver” was changed to “receiver.”

Moments ago, while rereading a post I’d just published, I found I’d missed “food” was instead “good”.

The Typo Demon had struck again, and I missed it, even though I’d read the post over at least 3 times before I hit publish.

So I’m turning this over to my fellow bloggers – or anyone, really – in the comments below.

How often do you do battle with the Typo Demon?

What are your worst/funniest typos?

Priorities

On bringing the cats food and water this morning, it was clear where their priorities are. One of the food bowls still had lots of food, but when I gave them warm water, that’s where they crowded around.

In these cold temperatures, warm water is more important than food.

Camera set up

This is our new set up to take photos of our feeding area.

Unfortunately, when the deer came this morning, she could see me through the window, taking the lens cap off, etc, and took off.

Also, in case you are wondering, yes those are marker flags in the plant pot.  They, and the yarn, are there to protect the avocado plant from the cats. They decided that this pot was a perfect bed and broke one of the branches off before I could rescue it.
