Birds and Buck

I moved the bird feeder stand closer to the house last night.  Here are a couple of pictures I got this morning.  (click on the images to see the larger version)

This evening, while heading out to pick up my daughter from work, we saw a deer on the road, then another dashing across when we were almost home.

What I didn’t expect was to see one outside our window!  We got a visit from a young buck, and there was enough light out still that I was able to get a few shots.

When I first saw it, it was coming through the tall grass in the main garden.  It stayed and grazed by an apple tree, before making its way over towards the house.  Then it started enthusiastically eating some elm leaves!  It was here for only a short time when something startled it, mid chomp, and off it ran.

The deer are so much more brightly coloured, this time of year.  This guy is all legs! :-D

I am so happy to still be seeing them in the yard, and to actually get some pictures, too! :-D

Redwing Blackbird

For the past few days, we haven’t been putting anything out at the feeding station; there was no point in continuing to put out deer feed this time of year, so I didn’t bother buying more when we ran out.  When next we buy seeds, I hope to get mixed bird seed, and have a bird feeder out the living room window to put it in. :-)

There are still enough seeds left on the ground to attract birds, and today, I got photos of a male redwing blackbird (the females look VERY different).

2018-05-23.redwing.blackbird.male1

This particular bird has very little of the red showing through its wing.  Perhaps it is transitioning from juvenile to adult?

2018-05-23.redwing.blackbird.male2

The red is certainly there, though under black feathers.

I really wasn’t expecting to see them in our yard, since they prefer wet and marshy areas.

Not that there are much of those right now.

I’ve read in the news today that there are 3 fires threatening some communities to the west of us.  Not close enough for us to see any smoke.

We also got weather alerts today, for the heat.  Though our local temperature is at “only” 19C, the next town is at 29C.  I wish I knew where our local weather readings are coming from, because they seem to be on the low side.  I’d like to see the weather station and how it’s situated.  The station in the next town over is a class A station; about as perfectly situated as a weather station can be.

Stating tonight and through to Friday, there are possible thunderstorms but all for the southern and western parts of the province.  They will likely miss us, though I hope we at least get rain.  Temperatures are predicted to hit 23-25C, with humidexes of 31-35C.

From the weather alert;

Residents of and visitors to the above mentioned regions are advised to take the following precautions to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours;

  • drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.
  • reduce your heat risk. Schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day.
  • the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
  • Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.

And that is why we aren’t doing yard work during the day!

I think we might want to move the bird bath over to the East side of the house, too, once we clean it up.

There be Deer here

It seems that putting the feed out in the evening, instead of the morning, has been a good idea.  Three deer came by, about half an hour after I put the feed out, when none at all showed up during the day.  Which means they had plenty to eat, since the birds didn’t get a chance to eat it all, first! :-D

2018-05-14.deer1

I think it’s the same trio that showed up last time, but I’d have to compare photos to be sure.

2018-05-14.deer2

Just look at those little baby antlers! :-D

2018-05-14.deer3

This one has such a loooong smooth face.

The fur on all of them was looking pretty rough.

2018-05-14.deer4

This one had gone over to the edge of the trees and started nibbling on the new leaves on the wild roses, but it kept getting distracted.  Then its fur got all puffed out as it kept staring in different areas.

The other two starting checking out the distraction, too.

Eventually, the source of their agitation emerged…

2018-05-14.cat

It was funny to see Nasty Crime Boy start crouching down in stalking position while staring down the deer!

2018-05-14.deer5

When the deer showed up, I just started taking as many shots as quickly as I could, hoping I’d get at least a few good ones.  I ended up taking over 100 pictures in the short time they were here.  I got several of this deer making funny faces like this, with this one being the clearest.  The deer was chewing on something that seemed to be giving it a hard time, resulting in photos that look like it’s having a good laugh!

2018-05-14.deer6

There was the one deer with the long, smooth face.  Then there is this one, with the lumpy, bumpy face.

Too cute!

New Sparrow: updated

First off, a happy mother’s day to all the moms out there.  I hope you had a lovely day of it.  My own was nice and quiet, and I am quite delighted with my early mother’s day gift from my husband; an OBD II diagnostic tool that plugs into the van, with readings sent to an app on my phone via Bluetooth.

According to it, the van is doing just great.  In the near future, I’ll have to get my daughter to drive, so I can see what readings come up while driving.

My husband knows what makes my heart to pitter patter very well! :-D

We haven’t been seeing any deer lately, again, though the piles of feed I’m leaving out in the evening are gone in the the morning, so they do seem to still be coming out.  There is still plenty of scattered grain for the birds, though.  Right now, we’re still getting mostly fox sparrows and white throated sparrows, but today we saw a new one.

2018-05-13.bird1

There were only two of them, so we almost missed them among the other birds.

2018-05-13.bird2

Next to the white throated sparrow, you can see the bodies are almost identical, until you get to the head, neck and chest.  I’m guessing that means it’s also a type of sparrow, but a quick search for sparrows has brought up nothing with a head like that.  I’ll have to try looking some more later, but if you happen to know what it is, please feel free to let me know in the comments. :-)

Update: May 14

It looks like the new bird is a Harris’s Sparrow.

The Return of the Deer

It’s been a while since I got deer pictures!

Some days, we’ve seen none at all.  A couple of times, I’ve seen a lone deer in the evening, slow to come over, quick to run away.  My husband sometimes sees them around dawn, but none have been coming over during the day, and none of the regulars.

Tonight, however, we had visitors!

I spotted them as I went into the living room, coming in from the opposite direction we usually see them.  Two smaller deer in front, and a larger one somewhat behind.  Unfortunately, my coming into the living room startled them, and they ran off – the two smaller deer one way, the larger one the other.

The smaller ones didn’t go far, though.  I managed to position myself and the camera as they slowly came in.  Eventually, I could see the third one, going into the spruces from the other side of the pallet pile, then making it’s way through the trees to the garden area, before finally coming around from the other side.

The first of the little ones was looking very rough!

2018-05-03.deer1

Aside from the burrs, there appear to be missing patches of fur, and it looks like his ribs are sticking out!

Notice the antler nubs?

2018-05-03.deer2

The second deer made its way over, and in this picture, is watching the third deer going through the trees.

2018-05-03.deer3

The male doesn’t look as beat up on this side!

The third deer came around and they fed for a while, but they were very nervous and kept looking out way, as well as at what I figure were cats around behind the house.  Unfortunately, with our light on, there was nothing to hid our own movements.  My husband moved an arm to pick up his water bottle, and off they ran!

Once again, though, they did not go far.  I could see them grazing on the far side of the wood pile and…

Was that a fourth deer?

Sure enough, it was.

After a while, all four of them came over to feed.  By this time, it was too dark for photos, but I could still see them fairly well.  There was something familiar about the battered face of the fourth one.

It wasn’t until I uploaded the pictures that I was able to confirm that yes, these are deer we’ve had before!

2018-05-03.deer5

There’s the little one with the scars on either side of its snout.  The fourth one, with the battered face, is the one I’d identified as her mother, the last time they were here.

I’m happy that they came back, though they do look the worse for wear!

Though I’d put plenty of feed out in the morning, the birds had been at it all day, so there wasn’t a lot left by evening.  Since the deer are coming very early in the morning, and in the evening (if they come at all), we’ve decided we will start leaving more feed out in the evening, instead of the morning.  That way, the evening visitors will get feed, but there should still be plenty in the morning, since the birds won’t be eating it during the night.

So after the deer left, but before it got too dark, I went to put out a bucket of feed.  As I was coming around the house, I was startled by the weird, loud, breathy cough, and the sound of hooves.  All for of them had been in the garden area!

As they ran off in opposite directions again, and this is clearly a family group, I expect they’ll make their way back to join each other.  Maybe even back to the fresh feed I just left out! :-)

No Deer Today!

I saw only one deer today, and it took off before I had a chance to take it’s photo.

Sadness.

Today was a day I ended up spending mostly on the computer, though I did manage some time outside enjoying some manual labour, working clearing up the pile of wood in the garden.  It seems we can only go so far, then have to pause for the day, so that newly uncovered ice and snow can thaw, and we can get more out.

I do, however, still have some critter pictures for you to enjoy.

First up, this dapper little gentleman.

2018-04-14.squirrel

Oh, those adorable little hands!

Then I found these pictures on the card, that my daughter took.  Too funny!

2018-04-14.cat12018-04-14.cat22018-04-14.cat3

What, after I’ve posted these, and now that it’s getting too dark, a whole herd of deer will show up. :-D

Silly Deer!

I’ve been getting daily photos of deer for quite some time, now, and you’d think I would be tired of it by now.  After all, they are often quite similar in pose and expression – and really, there isn’t a lot to differentiate one deer from another.

Then I upload the photos and see them on the monitor.  The photos themselves often pick up details I simply cannot see from the window; the zoom lens makes all the difference.  It’s so amazing to be able to stand in my window and have a deer looking at me from less than 20 feet away.  Then, I upload the photo of that same deer, looking directly into the camera, with such detail and clarity that I can see our home reflected in its eyes, and count the eyelashes.  It’s amazing!

Best of all are the split-second shots.  Those fleeting moments, captured in a still shot, that often have me laughing out loud.  Especially the tongue shots.  Those just crack me up!

Today was filled with such photos.  Here are some of my favourites.

First, we start with Barbecue, being all rude and stuff. ;-)

2018-04-04.deer1

She looks like she’s giving someone behind the house the raspberry!

Taking photos from the living room has its other challenges, though.

Like cats.

2018-04-04.deer2

Cats who like to walk on the window ledge, right in front of the camera.

That’s the mama cat’s tail, blocking what would have been a great shot of Hungry Girl. :-D

She looks like she had opinions about that.

2018-04-04.deer3

“Hey, cat!  You messed up my picture!  You know what I say to that?

pptthhhhppptthh!!!”

2018-04-04.deer4

“So there!”

This next one is something extra special, though.

2018-04-04.deer5

That’s some 3D, jumping right out atcha, dynamic action tongue going on there!

And look at those teeth!

There were more funny shots today.  Too many to post!

Later on, Detail and her boy came by.

2018-04-04.deer6

I really tried to get some closer shots of her boy and his growing antler nubs, but the light was starting to fail.  With a zoom lens, it doesn’t take much.  You can’t really tell in this photo, but it looks like the antler tips are just, just starting to show through the fur.

Looking forward to taking more pictures tomorrow! :-D

Snoozing

After our vehicle troubles yesterday, I’d intended to stay close to him today.  I had to go to the post office before noon, and that was the only thing on my list that required driving.

I ended up out three times today, first to pick up the mail, next to pick up prescriptions, and finally to get a few more groceries.  I tried a different town this time; one I haven’t been to in probably 2 decades.  It’s a half hour drive away, and I was hoping it would be more of a stocking up sort of place.  I was wrong.  Ah, well.  Live and learn.  It did give me a chance to test the vehicle out – and be totally paranoid, constantly checking the gauges and the heat, and listening for any unusual noises.

No signs of any leaks.  I checked under the van in the garage, to see if there was a sign of puddling that I’d missed before, but the ground (the garage is just over packed dirt) has had so many spills over the years, I couldn’t tell if what I did see was old or new.  Since I was in and out so many times, though, I could compare from within the day, and there is no sign of any leaks.

Of course, I’m still going to be paranoid!

For now, I get to share adorable photos with you.  I give you…

Sleepy kitties!

2018-04-04.sleeping.cat

Nasty Crime Boy was back in what seems to be a favourite spot, causing us to spontaneously melt into puddles of awwwwwww….

2018-04-04.two.cats

Then Trülbus the Crime Eater joined him, for double awwwwww….

I even got some bird pictures today; here is one of them.

2018-04-04.redpolls

They seem to like the new feed, too. :-)

They also were completely ignored by the sunning cats. :-D

We haven’t been seeing the grosbeaks for a while now.  They seem to disappear for a while, then come back in droves.

When getting the mail, I picked up some more of the previous deer feed, that’s mostly sunflower seeds.  I plan to mix them about half and half for the next while.  That way, there will be a wider variety of seeds for the critters.

There are deer pictures for today, too.  So many have me laughing out loud!  I will share some of those in a separate post, once I’m done resizing them.

Animal Activity

Today, things got quite cold; we hit -20C, with a wind chill of -26C in the morning, though our high of the day was around -5C.  It was also bright and sunny, with little wind, which meant that some of the ice and snow still managed to melt a bit, and the animals came out to enjoy the sun.

Not that I was there to see most of that; our adventures of the day will be for another post.  Here, I give you cute animal pictures!

This morning, my younger daughter got some pictures in – it was the first time she’d used this camera!  Mama and the twins had come by.  She managed to get a few good shots, in spite of the massive reflections on the glass.

2018-04-02.deer.watching

Here, Mama and one of her twins are very intently watching something.

What where they watching?

2018-04-02.cat.walking

I think that’s Squishum.  It could be Rolando Moon, but looks too small.

I was home for a while and got a few shots of Hungry Girl and Barbecue.  Hungry Girl is the one that comes closer to the house, so I can get really good shots of her face.  Barbecue hangs back, so I don’t get the good shots like this one…

2018-04-02.deer.profile

I got a few really good ones; it was hard to choose which to post.

Then Hungry Girl obliged me with a funny one…

2018-04-02.deer.tongue

Mmmm…. nummers…

While my younger daughter and I were out in the afternoon, my older daughter got some photos for us, too.

2018-04-02.deer.and.cat

It was Hungry Girl and Barbecue again … and cats!  Can you see Beep Beep, hiding in the grass?

The Hand also came out to enjoy the sun.

2018-04-02.the.hand

Awwww… look at that face!

Others came by, as well.

2018-04-02.nasty.crime.boy

Nasty Crime Boy came over to luxuriate in the sun, where he was joined by Butterscotch…

2018-04-02.butterscotch.nastycrimeboy

… who looks most displeased! :-D

Deer visitors – and a surprise guest!

This morning, we had a WHOLE lot of activity out our living room window!  Detail and her boy were back, as were Mama and the twins.  Sometimes, they’d be eating peacefully together, other times, Mama would chase them off.

Then we saw more activity in the spruce grove and realize that Hungry Girl and Barbecue had tried to come over, but they were getting chased off by Detail’s boy!

Getting photos was rather difficult, though, as the sun was shining into our living room, and there was a lot of reflection of us in the way.  I did manage to crop most of that out of this image I got with my phone.

20180401.deer.drama

You can actually still see my husband, and part of the book he’s reading, in the reflections. :-D

Later on, something big went flying by, and I had to check it out.  That’s when I saw a huge raven, over by our compost pile.  It didn’t stay anywhere for long, so the best I was able to get was this photo of it in one of the maples. while leaning up against the window as far as I could!

2018-04-01.raven

I remember, in my younger days, reading about ravens and descriptions of them.  We never had them around, so that’s all I had to go by.  It seemed to me that they were kinda like big crows.

Then I moved to Victoria, BC, and saw a raven for the first time.  I couldn’t believe how massive these things get!  And that noise they’d make.  Yikes!

Usually, the biggest birds we see are blue jays, crows, magpies and grouse, with the grouse being the biggest.  Red tail hawks are not much bigger than crows.  Once in a rare while, I’ve seen owls and eagles.

This raven?  The only birds I’ve seen locally that are bigger than this was a great horned owl and a bald eagle, many years ago.  This thing was massive, even compared to the ravens I saw on the West Coast!  They are not at all common around here.

Early this evening, we got visited again by Hungry Girl and Barbecue, for a little while.  I’m glad they came back, because they sure didn’t get a chance at the feed this morning!

2018-04-01.deer

Barbecue looks like he’s giving me the stink eye!

Or should I say “she.”  No sign of antler nubs!
