Well, it was worth a try

We had a light snow last night. Just enough that it was worth shoveling paths clear while I did my morning rounds.

I made sure to include a path to the storage house, where I was sure there was at least one phone.

There turned out to be two.

Yes, they both work.

Yes, I tested the line with both of them.

Our landline remains “open”. Just a constant crackling.

Which means the problem is not our phone. We’ve also pretty much established that it’s not the jacks, or anything internal, so far as we can see.

Which means it’s somewhere outside. Possibly not even near the house.

Time to call 611.

    • If the damage is outside, we won’t be billed for it. If the damage is inside, we don’t get billed for their equipment failure. Of, however, it’s damage by, say, our cats, we would get normally charged for it. I believe the technician has discretion in determining that. We had our line cut out before, and the tech replaced the jack in my husband’s room. He called it equipment failure, but I suspect the cats had something to do with that failure. I don’t think we could get away with that more than once!

    • There is a small box (maybe 6″ square) on the outside of our old kitchen, about 6′ up. There are also larger phone company boxes in two places along our fence lines. I know those were recently serviced because the trail cam by our sign is just a few feet away. It recorded the tech stopping on the road and going to and from the box. I can’t remember the proper name for it.

      • If the box on the house has a set of screws that can be turned with a ‘regular screwdriver’, so that a cover swings open, then open it up and look inside. If there is a telephone wire with that little telephone plug that goes to a jack, then you can unplug that cord and plug a phone into the now available jack.

If the problem remains, then the issue *is* with the phone company equipment.

      • I remember the tech checking it, the last time we had issues. I’m not going to try it, though. I’d have to use a step stool or ladder and neither would be stable. My husband is tall enough to reach, but not in his condition.

        Ah, short people problems. 😆

      • My cousin….she is just over 200cm tall…….

She said middle school was not a lot of fun and went on to say that playing volleyball in high school made things a lot easier.

      • Too funny! When I was in high school, almost all three other girls in gym class were on the varsity team. They got so ticked off when I played just as good as they did.

I much preferred playing floor hockey or basketball with the boys.

  1. At least you eliminated the phone as the cause. Those old rotary phones never break, lol.

At this point, there’s not much point in speculating where the cause is, it could be anything. When I lived in the California mountains, we’d have phone and (dial up) internet problems because squirrels would stuff the junction boxes on the phone poles full of nuts and other stuff. You can’t make this stuff up, LOL. 🫤

Here’s hoping 611 is more useful than it’s US counterparts.
