Still messed up

Well, I really did a number on my right rotator cuff yesterday. I can’t raise my arm at all in two directions, with limited mobility in other directions.

During the night, I heard a commotion on my craft table and discovered Ginger peeing on it. Getting up to chase him off was quite difficult, and I ended up having to put weight on the injured arm. By the time I was done getting him off and cleaning the mess, I was in a cold sweat and feeling ready to throw up.

Yes, I did take painkillers. In fact, I went so far as to take one of my husband’s prescription pain meds.

It made no difference at all.

After a couple more hours of attempted sleep, things have improved. I will probably need to see a doctor, but I’m not sure where to go. I don’t really have one, and my interim doctor isn’t in the clinic on Fridays, anyhow. I really don’t want to spend hours waiting in an emergency room, either.

My daughters are taking shifts to be available to help me. My younger daughter has the day shift. She fed and watered the outside cats and tried to do a head count. She counted about 20 or so, which has been typical for our warmer days of late.

My daughter is cooking breakfast for me now, so I will have to de-cat myself and get up. I have been trying to at least lie down, if not sleep. Oddly, lying on my left side has been more painful, and not just because of my arthritic hip. I just can’t find a good position for my right arm that doesn’t strain the joint. Lying on my right side, I can at least find a position that supports the shoulder, rather than strains it.

I really, really don’t want to go to a doctor.

  1. I did something similar to my right shoulder last year. My idiot former chiropractor was useless also. What ultimately fixed it for me was putting my shoulder up against a door frame or corner of a wall and just leaning in. That popped it back into place and the pain immediately decreased by half. Took a few days for the pain to totally clear up, but it worked for me.

    • Oh, ow! I’m glad that worked put for you!

My shoulder is definitely not dislocated. I think I may have damaged some tendons. I think if I’d actually torn anything, I think I would have been in a lot more pain, right from the start. Hard to tell, without getting Xrays.

Some years ago, the younger of my brothers was on a stack, getting hay, when he slipped in between two round bales. He ended up needing surgery and now has titanium pins in his shoulder. I don’t think I’m at that point!

      • It didn’t hurt actually. I just stood up against the corner of the wall and leaned in, giving a little push. Nothing like Mel Gibson’s antics in Lethal Weapon. My shoulder felt like pulled muscles also. The way my chiropractor told it (keeping in mind he actually couldn’t fix anything, lol), is that the shoulder isn’t a true ball and socket type mechanical joint. It’s more a floating joint. All I know is a little nudge and I was golden.

      • am reminded here of help I got during lockdown even from online physio Bob and Brad – they gave fantastic advice for all manner of pain and injuries – try them while you are making your mind up about doc, in any case. I avoided hip op at least partly because of their approach.

  2. Oh dear.. 😩 Sorry to read that. Time and self (and God) are my usual healers, and since you feel it’s not a worst case scenario, and when or if you can countenance the thought, you could try this (preceded by a hot shower and a couple of anti-inflammatories, maybe). Daughter sent me printouts from her physical therapy home exercises to do. I tried one exercise and it worked so well for reducing pain, loosening up, I tell other folks maybe try it. Stand a (bad shoulder) arm-length away from a wall; with the arm straight out, trace the alphabet letters on it in capitals. Work slowly over days until you can make giant sized letters. Either way, tho, good luck🌷. Hope the pain lessens to at least a comfortable sleep position soon!

    • Thanks!

At the moment, I still can’t lift my arm straight out, but I can now lift it forward, so that’s a huge improvement.

Your exercise reminded me of what a physiotherapist got me doing, to help my feet. Have my feet off the edge of a bed, and trace the alphabet in the air with my toes. It did help a great deal!
