Early Valentine’s Day present?

Well, my husband, darling that he is, has ordered me a Valentine’s Day gift.

I’m getting a new computer.

Which I’m both happy and sad about, since it meant he’s basically maxed out his new credit card. Which means, after he gets his eyes tested later this month, he won’t be able to get new glasses.

So we’ll be working on paying that down as quickly as possible!!! I’ll be getting a caregiver tax credit that I was going to put towards his glasses, anyhow, so that’s going to his credit card.

I’ll be getting a SkyTech mini-gaming computer. Since I will be doing more photo and video work, a gaming computer will have the system requirements I need. A few things will probably need upgrading; it has only 500gigs of memory storage, for example. My current computer has 1.79T, plus I have a 3T external hard drive – which I currently can’t access on my current machine. But that’s easy enough to work around. The important part is having a machine that actually works!

Speaking of which…

I’ve downloaded a free version of the Advanced Systemcare software recommended to me, and have been trying to install it.

The installation bar shows it at what looks like 99% installed, and it’s been like that for over 10 minutes now.

The order for the new computer has just been placed, so we don’t have an estimated delivery date yet. Hopefully, it won’t take long. The way things are going, I won’t be surprised if this thing starts smoking or something!

    • Thanks.

I’ve left it trying to install, since it can’t be closed while in the process. Looks like it won’t stop until I shut down the computer. Assuming I *can* shut it down properly!

      • TaskMgr (Ctrl-Alt-Del) can be used to kill it.
I highly highly recommend it on the new pc. I run it after every single session to wipe out lingering data and fix anything thatgog broken. It also has a great option for complete sw uninstall, including all the little bits of sw that are usually left behind and can cause sw conflicts. I usually buy about 5 of their sw apps but am onky running 2 right now, ASC and the advanced un-installer.

      • Nope. Task manager didn’t work. Nor did it allow a proper shut down again. Lots of things just aren’t doing what they should.

Estimated delivery on the new machine is the 12th. A Monday. Which means it has a high chance of actually arriving on Friday.

        Here’s hoping!

    • Well, this is interesting!

The “installing” popup never went away when I shut off my computer last night, but it seems to have worked, anyhow! When I turned it on this morning, I got a pop up giving me info, including the number of things it couldn’t do anything with. 😂

When I get a chance later, I’ll set it to scan my system and see what comes up.

  1. Well, I guess I don’t have to worry about that suggested refurbished machine after all, lol.

Given what current level gaming computers are capable of, you should be well beyond good for simple videos and picture management. Even Nvidia 3060 cards are designed for 120 FPS 4K gaming. :)

      • I knew they were likely a Chinese company, and I hate to say it but…

They apparently have a HORRIBLE reputation for reliability and honoring their warranty. There are other fake review sites up that aren’t as harsh, but most of the big name independent sites do NOT like the brand. I’d advise cancelling before Amazon ships and ordering something else.

FWIW, I’ve used MSI computers for the last 2 decades. They’re relatively affordable and last a long time. The laptop before my current one was running fine after 10 years when I finally sold it after upgrading. Amazon carries them also.

  2. Well, crap. And my husband would not have looked that up before buying. I had been perfectly willing to wait or get a refurbished one, but he told me about it after it was already ordered.
