Yikes!

Good grief, check out that wind chill!

It’s past 11pm as I write this, and we are at -30C/-22F, and the wind chill is at -43C/-45F!

I’ve actually snagged a small heater to use in my bedroom/office, because the furnace just can’t keep up. Especially in my north facing, log walled room with the last drafty window that my mother refused to have replaced when all the others were done, before we moved here.

Time to curl up in bed and stay warm with about a dozen cats or so!

  1. Yikes. That is way too cold for me. As it is, I spent yesterday afternoon cleaning out the stove, the stove pipes and part of the chimney. I probably should have gone up on the roof and cleaned the chimney but I ran out of time. I’ve been having to burn wood that isn’t seasoned so everything needed the work. Once we get past this polar vortex and things warm up enough I’ll do the chimney as I still have dad’s chimney brush. I still ended up turning the furnace up a bit last night as I wasn’t sure the fire would burn. My wood stove loves to be obstinate when building a fire from scratch.

Hopefully this winter will end soon and we can get back to less dangerous temperatures.

    • Having both a wood stove and a furnace is a really good thing! My brother had to seal up the wood burning furnace or he couldn’t get insurance for this place. The section of chimney on the roof was removed when the new roof was put on, but we do still have a chimney for the wood cookstove in the old kitchen. The stove can’t be used, as it’s broken, but one of my goals it to replace it with another, smaller stove – properly installed to today’s standards, this time!
