Belated Canadian Thanksgiving dinner

The Thanksgiving family dinner we had planned last month got rescheduled to today.  Since moving here, we did have one large family dinner, before Christmas or so, so it’s been almost a year.

I think it turned out rather well.

I think Doom Guy agrees. Continue reading

Bird feeder

I recently picked up some more mixed bird seed and added it to our feeder.

I find it interesting, which seeds get eaten right away, and which get left behind.

And the lengths some birds will go to, to get their preferred seed, while ignoring other seeds that are easier to get to.

Like this nuthatch.

All the birds seem to prefer the same seeds.  Which is weird, as the seed blend is designed to appeal to a variety of birds.  Our visiting birds don’t seem to want variety in their food!

The above photo was taken yesterday, before the snow fell.  (I got some others, I will post over the next few days.)  Today, they were digging through the snow to get at the seeds.

They were being watched, as they did so!

The Outsider was very interesting in what they were doing up there!

Gosh, he’s an adorable cat.

When it gets dark out, we can still see the white of the hanging bird feeder, but the rest of the platform and stand is barely visible.

Last night, while sitting in my crochet corner, I noticed the hanging feeder swinging away and thought it was getting quite windy!  Then I saw some movement, as the stand itself seemed to move.  We’ve had wind gusts strong enough to knock it over, so that got my attention.

Which is when I saw the black shadow, moving around on the platform feeder.  A splash of white came into view, and I found Doom Guy, looking back at me though the window!

Too funny!

That makes three of the kittens that we’ve seen up on the platform feeder!  Makes me wonder how often it happens, when we’re not there to see it. :-)

Feline Followers

Any time we are out and about in the yard, it’s not unusual for us to have at least one or two cats following us around.

Since Doom Guy has discovered he likes humans, he tends to get underfoot – literally – fairly regularly.

20181101.following.cats1

These days, my morning check around the yard has gotten more extensive, since I’m now looking for more than just downed branches.  This morning, while walking on the far side of the big garden, I had Butterscotch, Rolando Moon and Beep Beep following me.  then Doom Guy caught up and joined his aunty in trying to trip me up! :-D

20181101.following.cats4

Rolando Moon tends to keep her distance, though if I stop walking, she might come over for a quick pet.  Usually, she just tags along and meows at me.

20181101.following.cats2

With Butterscotch and Rolando Moon around, Beep Beep kept her distance, too.  Usually, she is underfoot and trying to get me to pick her up.  Not today!

What was adorable was the other kittens.  I could see them making their way through the tall grass in the big garden area, following at a distance.  Bob, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, from what I could see through the grass.  Possibly Jim, too.

The kittens didn’t continue following me was I checked the fence line though the spruce grove.  Just the adult cats came along.

20181101.following.cats3

Poor Butterscotch!  She was underfoot for the most part, but when I paused for a bit, Rolando Moon came over Rolando is the cat that is the most aggressive towards the other cats, though it usually is just a bit of hissing and the odd batting of the paw.  This morning, however, she actually went at Butterscotch!  Butterscotch ran off further into the spruces, but Beep Beep was there.  Beep Beep then attacked Butterscotch – only to have Rolando Moon attack Beep Beep, as if she were protecting Butterscotch!

So weird!

Plans? What are those?

The hard part about making plans is, they get disrupted so quickly! :-D  Even scheduled appointments and the like often get changed at the last minute.  Even the medical appointment we had for my husband this morning was one that had been rescheduled twice before – and that turned out unusual. You WILL pay attention to me, says the cat

Walking around the yard in the mornings, it’s not usual for me to have a cat or two, following me along.  This morning was no exception.

Butterscotch, however, was much more demanding of attention than usual!  Especially when I stopped to try and get some photos.

I did manage to get a couple photos of lichen on some trees that were worth posting.

20181029.bark1

I just love those textures.

20181029.bark2

Even when I was a kid, I was fascinated by the look of lichen!

When I started walking around, Butterscotch was her usual self.  Dashing around my feet, trying to trip me, then running ahead.

20181029.catcompany1

When I paused for a few moments, she started rolling in the dirt, being thoroughly entertaining.

20181029.catcompany2

The Outsider followed along for a bit, though when he got close to Butterscotch, she started to hiss and bat at him.

Even Rosencrantz or Guildenstern started to follow along, though he hid behind a crab apple tree, when I tried to get a picture.

As I continued along between the spruce grove and the apple trees by the garden, Butterscotch got more insistent.

20181029.catcompany3

Yeah. She started climbing the back of my leg, too.

I ended up picking her up and carrying her for a while.

Her little feet were damp and cold.  Maybe that’s why she wanted up?

While I stopped to get photos of tree bark, this happened.

20181029.catcompany4

That is a very trusting cat.  If I so much as leaned backwards, down she would have went!

20181029.catcompany5

Look at her twisting and turning!

Look at that expression on her face. :-D

20181029.catcompany6

Then she decided to eat the bottom of my zipper.

Silly kitty!

The dangers of kitties!

From when the kittens tried to kill my husband. !!!

Oh, those kits!

The outside cats are certainly entertaining.

First, they tried to kill my husband this morning.  !!!  As he went out to feed them this morning, they were all at the door.  The usual tripping hazard!  As he started to step down from the concrete stairs at the door, Doom Guy dashed under his foot.  He moved to avoid stepping on him, and ended up stepping on one of the glazed bricks that are along the side of the entryway.

It was slippery.

Down he went! Continue reading

Visiting

Today was a day for visiting.

We even got a visit from my brother’s dog, this morning. :-)

20181026.visiting.dog

I think we need to add “dog” to the list of critters we’ve been feeding – he does seem to enjoy the cat kibble! :-D

Then it was time for me to go and visit my mother. Continue reading

Getting feisty!

Part of my morning routine, weather willing, is to walk around the yard and check on things, such as looking for fallen branches, or seeing if anything broke or blew over during the night.

Having been able to clear as much of the spruce grove perimeter as I have, I now include that as well.

So I finally got a photo this morning, of the lonely little cedar tree, cleared of the poplars that were starting to crowd it.

20181026.cedar .

I will have to do some research to find out the best way to care for this little guy.  :-)

Beep Beep has taken to following me, as I walk around.  Sometimes, Butterscotch as well.

This morning, I had both of them.

Beep Beep, we’ve noticed, has been getting feistier and more aggressive to the other cats.  This morning, she went after Butterscotch!20181026.catfight1

It’s one thing to be growling at the other cats, and maybe batting at them a bit.  Rolando Moon has always been like that.

20181026.catfight2

But this morning, she was ready to start a fight with Butterscotch!

20181026.catfight3

And Butterscotch is definitely the more passive of the two.

I broke them up and ended up carrying Butterscotch for a while.

Poor thing. :-(
