Morning kitties!

Beep Beep seems to enjoy her retirement to indoor life. This is how I found her this morning.

She just loves this corner of the couch, so my husband has been making nests for her.

Because we’re not sucks when it comes to the cats. Not at all!

/sarcasm…

The kittens were out and about this morning, so I made sure to get some photos. These are for you, Silk! A bit of virtual kitten therapy. :-)

Rosencrantz sharing breakfast with a grandbaby!

I was going through some old photos last night and found photos of a cat I had forgotten about completely. They were taken last October. We were getting sudden visits from a white and grey tom. He didn’t hang around long, but I think he must still be around somewhere. He and Little Braveheart look very much alike!

Rosencratnz with… another grandbaby (or baby?)

I wasn’t able to get good pictures of Rosencrantz’s baby with the orange spots, but she was out this morning, too. :-)

I had to zoom in to take this photo, with the cherry tree between us, so as not to startle Butterscotch’s babies away from the food.

Seeing Susan watching them from the window is just too funny!

Gosh, these guys look so small compared to the other kittens!

Little balls of fluff is all they are! I was eventually able to sit on a step near them, without them running away, but the calico and and the orange and white one stayed hidden in the mock orange beside me.

This little guy seems very suspicious of me!

What a cutie!

I’m curious abut Tabby’s mark on her nose. I thought it was a scar, but there is no sign of an actual wound. It’s an unbroken line of white fur.

I just love the patterns or grey in her fur.

Kittens are always a great way to start the day. :-)

First treats

Last night, the outside kittens got their first taste of cat treats!

It got their interest, but not quite enough to come close. ;-)

They were enough to keep Tabby from running away, though!

If Little Braveheart got any of the treats last night, I never saw it, but she has been increasingly less jumpy around me in the mornings, and preferring to eat by the house.

Even Tabby is not running off quite so quickly.

As for Little Braveheart and Tabby’s sibling, we still hardly see it at all. It’s the same with Rosencrantz’s baby – and it appears there’s just the one left from her litter. I have not seen any sign of the other two, since that one day I spotted them at the pump shack. :-(

Another reason to socialize the outside cats as much as possible. They’ll stay closer to the house, where their chances of survival are higher.

One of these days, I want to break out the big guns.

Wet cat food! :-D

It’s a cat’s life

The cats are melting in this heat, too!

This was how I found David, yesterday.

This was how Cheddar was keeping me company while I was on the phone, this morning.

You can sure tell these cats feel safe with us! :-D

Morning kitties

Some smiles to share with you!

My daughter joined me this morning, to help with crowd control. Leyendecker promptly scaled her and settled on a shoulder.

Saffron, on the other hand…

… claimed her spot, getting her way with sheer adorableness. :-D

Turmeric and Nicco, meanwhile, had themselves a wrestling match!

Big Rig settled down to eat and be completely non-photogenic, this morning. LOL

What a great way to start the day.

Plans? What are those?

First, I wish to share with you this image of domestic bliss I get to enjoy from my office chair of late.

Just look at those blue, blue eyes! And the little guy, splayed on his back. We had been calling him Nicky Pants, but it looks like we’ve settled on Nicco for a name. Mini-BeepBeep, has earned a different name. She is growing much bigger than the other kittens, and is now known as Big Rig. :-D

One of the things I had scheduled for today was a quick stop at my mother’s. Originally, it was to hang up the beautiful flowers on the beautiful plant hanger my brother (who lives an hour and a half’s drive away) had bought her for Mother’s Day. Something lovely for her to see outside her window. I’d picked up some solar powered rope lights to wrap around it, so she could have something to see at night, too.

Well… to say that my mother was less than gracious about the gifts would be an understatement. Rude, angry, even cruel, would be better words to use. Now, I’ve reached a point where my mother’s behaviour can’t hurt me anymore. At least not in any tangible way. My brother, however is a better person than I am, and he still bleeds. When I spoke to her on the phone after the visit, and about my coming back to hang the flowers when it was supposed to warm up and stay warm, she continued with her ungrateful and hurtful comments.

So my brother drove the distance and took back the gift she made very clear she did not want. Keep in mind that my mother has always been an avid gardener, has two green thumbs, and was just complaining about how the caretakers had dug up all the annual flowers, including hers, and thrown them out. This gift was so that she could have flowers that the caretakers wouldn’t dig up.

The solar powered lights, she had told me, never turned on. It turned out there was a yard light outside her apartment, and it was simply too bright for the light string to turn itself on. When they were wrapped up on her couch, waiting for me, they did turn on, and she said they looked lovely – but she didn’t want them.

So my trip to hang up flowers became a trip to retrieve my unwanted gift.

I did, however, have a chance to talk to my mother on the phone about her behaviour and how hurtful she was. Her words may not have hurt me directly – I was not at all surprised by the behaviour – but to see how much she hurt my brother does make my heart ache for him. I tried to explain this to her. She is really big on people behaving “properly” (which typically means, they should act the way she thinks they should, dress the way she thinks they should, be interested in things she thinks they should, and not act, dress or think in any way she doesn’t like). So I told her that the proper way to respond when someone gives you a gift is to say thank you, and to be kind and gracious.

Well, she had all sorts of excuses to justify her behaviour, but I kept coming back to, “you can still be kind.”

Then we talked about when I could come over, and for her to meet me at a particular exit, since her building will remain locked down to the general public and most visitors for a while, yet. She was in need of some groceries, so I drove her over and she took advantage of having access to a vehicle and stocked up on more than her usual week’s worth of supplies. I helped bring all the bags to her apartment, and then left right away, but before I did, my mother seemed to make a real effort.

She thanked me. Then she talked about how grateful she was that I, and my siblings, help her out so much, and how thankful she was that we do.

Now, if only she would do this with my oldest brother! Of all of us, he is the one she has been the most unkind to. She had certainly tried it with me, since we moved out here, but it doesn’t work, so she has largely stopped.

*sigh*

So the whole thing went longer than planned, which would not have been much of an issue for what I wanted to get done today, had something else not changed. Today was supposed to be the day things started to warm up.

It hasn’t.

The forecast is still saying we’re supposed to reach of high of 11C (51F) with a “real feel” of 10C (50F) today.

They lie.

It’s been cold and damp and very unpleasant out there.

So instead of working outside and prepping the potato beds, I decided to focus on warm things. Like slow roasted ribs in BBQ sauce, and a massive batch of scalloped potatoes in a cheese sauce in the slow cooker. Both of which are being cooked low and slow.

The house smells amazing.

Oh, my timer just went off! Time to check on supper! :-D

The Re-Farmer

No, I didn’t forget!

After an oddly sleepless night and a fair bit of running around, I just didn’t have the energy to post earlier today.

I did, however, get kitty pictures! Here’s a bit of cuteness to make you smile. :-)

That one smooshed kitten… :-D

Creamsicle was very demanding about being picked up this morning!

The Potato Beetle is a trusting soul. Trusting that when he flings himself to the ground in front of my feet and start rolling, I won’t step on him!

The cuteness. It just oozes out everywhere! :-D

Finding Goats (video)

I went to check out the goats at our gate after seeing them on the security camera – and they came to check out the weird human with the shiny thing in her hand…

As I write this, it’s 1C (33F), with a “real feel” of -5C (23F). It’s supposed to drop down to a low of -1C (30F) and feel like -7C (19F).

Not only do I have the light we’d used to keep the cats’ water bowl from freezing last year in the mini-greenhouse to keep the planting trays warm, but I just made a shelter for the goat outside our door, using the saw horses and the crochet’s blankets we’d used in the sun room for the cats.

Yes. I made a blanket fort for the goat.

I don’t know if she’ll use it. She is really dedicated to standing at the door.

I think I know why. The person who originally owned her had a pen built up against the house, where there was a side door. When we lived in that building, that door led to what was a shed to store inventory for when the front of the building was a general store. The shed is now here at the farm, being used to store my parents’ old belongings, and there is now a set of stairs under that door. I remember driving by and the only time I ever could see the goats was when one of them was at the top of the stairs, at the door. The set up we have must feel familiar to the goat!

But it is so chilly out there, and she won’t leave the door to go to any of the places around that she could bed down in. I am really hoping she’ll use the shelter I rigged up for her!!

Morning kittens – with company!

The kittens have been getting noticeably more mobile, of late. I found this one – the only kitten without its eyes open, yet – trying to squirm out of their nest!

For the most part, though, they spend their time in a big, sleepy pile.

For the past few days, I’ve been letting upstairs cats into the basement while I tend to Beep Beep and the babies.

This morning, I decided to just leave the basement door open.

Oh, the excitement that created!

Even DahBoy crept his way down to sniff a bit, though he didn’t stay – and his mom had zero interest in leaving her perch in the living room. :-D

Of course, the things that interested them most were the things they couldn’t get at! Like the old basement, and the unfinished bar/storage area.

Keith was the only cat that showed any curiosity towards the kittens, and sticking his face around the corner was as far as he got.

We didn’t leave them down there, yet. After a while, they were lured out and the basement door closed up. In time – when the kittens are bigger – we’ll move all the food, water and litter boxes down to the basement, and keep the door open all the time. For now, they’ll just get to visit. ;-)

I think Beep Beep liked having some feline company.

Furry worms

I just can’t help it. I have to share!

Just look at that pile of furry, squirmy wormies!

Beep Beep came out for some pets while my daughter and I checked on her and her babies. While my daughter kept mama distracted, I was able to sneak a quick shot of the babies. :-)

We saw Butterscotch on the way back from the van, and she let me pet her. I tried to feel around her belly, and could feel one swollen teat. Just one. I don’t know if she moved away because it was painful, or because she just didn’t want that much attention, but I couldn’t get more than a quick brush of her belly. She still has no interest in coming inside to suckle her baby, which is just as well, I suppose.

Beep Beep, on the other hand, is quite loving the extra attention she has been getting. :-)
