Critter of the Day: coming closer

It’s always funny to see the deer and cats interacting.

There is also a cat on the bird feeder that the deer is looking at.

Meanwhile, Slick is keeping his paws warm by sitting on a pile of feed.

Eventually, the deer wanted the feed he was sitting on, which was a bit more than he would tolerate! :-D

In the moonlight – and silly cats

I just had to share this picture, that I took out my bedroom window, just before 2am.

This photo has only been resized, and was taken with my phone on the auto setting.

I could not believe how bright it was out there! There was a partial lunar eclipse last night, though this was taken well past that, with a full moon and mostly clear skies. It was so gorgeous outside!

Then there’s this, taken from our bathroom window…

There is Nikki the Nose, on my dad’s walker, and Ferdinand, under the transfer chair.

We’ll have a bit of a mess to clean up in the spring, but it’s worth it to give them some shelter from the cold – and for the entertainment value!

Frozen

My older daughter took care of feeding the critters this morning, so it was an hour or so before I headed out myself.

By then, the outside water bowl was already mostly frozen.

When I first got there, Beep Beep was sitting with her front paws in the bowl, on the ice.

My phone distracted her. :-D

Then I used the ice scraper to break up the surface of the ice in the water bowl. Next thing I knew, there were three cats drinking out of it!

One of my usual morning rounds had been to pick up all the twigs and branches in the yard that had fallen overnight. Once the snow got deep, I left the smaller stuff for spring. After yesterday’s winds, however, I went around and picked up some of the larger branches that had come down.

Trudging through unbroken snow is much more difficult than it looks. :-D

The Re-Farmer

It’s a bit breezy out there

I took this screen shot at about noon. That was two hours ago.

It is currently -17C, with a “RealFeel” of -31C.

I’m glad I thought to check the temperatures before I headed out this morning, as the beautiful sunny day made it seem deceptively pleasant out there. And it was – on the south side of the house. As soon as I came around the corner to put out deer and bird feed, I got blasted with the wind from the north. It was blowing the deer feed away, as I poured it out of my bucket! At that time, it was -16C with a wind chill of -30C.

Which kind of changes my plans for the day.

Winter “fun”

You know, I’m really looking forward to being able to just pop outside at a whim. Although temperatures have become relatively mild lately (we’re at -7C right now, with a wind chill of -12C), when you have to spend several minutes just to bundle up in layers and heave on the snow boots, going in tends to involve more planning for efficiency. ;-D

Yesterday was not particularly efficient.

Huuurrrrhhhh…

flu%20clipart

So, things have been a bit quiet here at The Re-Farmer.

There is a reason for that.

A cold has slowly been working its way through all of us. Even my husband is starting to get it, despite our efforts to keep it away from him.

Sick or not, stuff still needs to get done. Today, that included a trip into town.

Visitors

I had a couple of visitors while doing my rounds this morning.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve heard one of these guys, and even longer since I’ve seen one.

What I found interesting is that, when it saw me coming, it just walked away, then stayed to watch me for a while, before finally flying off. Usually, I don’t even know one’s been around until I hear it flying away.

At one point, I was under a tree when some bits of bark and debris began falling on my head.

Why?

Because of this little lady.

Who was not at all happy to see our other visitor.

My brother’s dog came by, and even came over to let me pet him, without doing the “sneaking up from behind” shyness he usually displays. He still played a bit shy, but he seemed more interested in getting pets, instead. :-D

I just adore that dog. He is so sweet!
