Red Sun

It was smokier today than yesterday.  Oddly, when I tried to go online and find local smoke advisories, I kept getting hits from 2014 and 2015, but nothing recent!  Strange.

From what I’ve been able to figure out, the smoke seems to be coming from the fires in California and BC right now.

When I headed back from locking the driveway gate, I found myself looking at the most amazing red orb in the sky.  The smoke had dimmed the sun enough that I could look right at it – it wasn’t even as bright as a full moon!

I tried to get some photos to capture the colour.  This first photo shows how much daylight there still was as I took the photo.

20180810.sun

I then played around with the white balance and ISO (who would have thought a phone camera would allow that, when they first came out? *L*) and got the sun to match the red I was actually seeing.  So imagine the daylight in the above photo, but with the sun as red as this…

20180810.red.sun

I expect we will have red suns like this every evening for some time, from what I’m reading about the fires out west. :-(

My reason for going out to lock the gate was at least a good one; it was after my electrician friend came over, with his daughter, with the new motor for our bathroom fan.  We now have a working bathroom fan again!  And didn’t have to pay to install a new one and cut things up to fit it.  The new fan will wait for when we install a second bathroom.

When they first got here and I went outside to great them, we heard the sound of kittens.  When his daughter commented, I told her about the two litters, and how we hadn’t yet been able to really touch them.

As I was at the bathroom door, talking to her dad, suddenly there she was – with the tuxedo in her arms!  She had meowed at it and it came over, then went for her toes.  She was able to pick it up!  It was obviously not too happy, but was also not freaking out and clawing, either.

My younger daughter ended up taking it out, along with a can of wet cat food, as a mollifying treat. :-D

Any day that involves cuddling kittens is a good day! :-D

Smoke on the water

My daughter had a slightly later shift today, so the sun was well up by the time I got to the beach.

During the drive in, we could see the haze of smoke, everywhere.  The lake was no exception.

20180810.lake.reflections.haze

Normally, I’d be able to see at least a bit of the other side of the lake from here.  Especially when the water is so calm.

(I believe there is an advisory against going into the water right now.  The birds are pretty, but their fecal matter can result in E. coli problems.)

20180810.beach.haze

The camera on my phone automatically “clears up” images taken in fog or haze.  The trees in the distance were not actually as visible in real life as in the photo!

While walking along the beach, a splash of colour caught my attention.

20180810.beach.painted.rocks

Someone left a bit of cheer for others to enjoy. :-)

I hung around town long enough for the post office to open, and for the postmaster to put out the mail, so I wandered over to the marina and sat by a fountain (and added a Pokemon into the gym that is there, which was controlled by my team at the time. :-D ).

20180810.frog.fountain

It still feels weird to see the bright green frogs.  They used to be just the brass, which developed a natural patina.

I still like them.  Because they’re frogs. :-D

I headed home shortly after this and was able to stop at the post office.  Sadly, my husband’s CPAP has not come in yet.  The company could only guarantee speed of delivery within the US.  Once in Canada, they have no control over how quickly something gets delivered.  Usually, packages get processed quickly.  Much faster than envelopes, anyhow.

Usually.

Evening antics

Yesterday evening, I went out to rake out the leaves and twigs where I had cleared away earlier.  There are too many twigs and pieces of wood to use to layer onto the garden by the house, so I got the fire pit going.

I also discovered the Butterscotch has moved her babies to the log shed by the fire pit.

I was watched, but none came near!

Later on, I did a walk around the yard and noticed the setting sun was an incredible red colour.  I wasn’t able to capture it adequately in this photo.

20180809.red.sun

Imagine the deepest red you can see was the entire ball of the sun.

The redness was because of the smoke of fires burning.  There are none burning near us.  The smoke may well be from another province!

That pile of wood in the foreground is part of what I’d cleared away earlier.

As I headed back into the yard, I discovered one of Butterscotch’s kittens in the area I had raked, dancing around.

I don’t think it ever did catch the moth. :-D

I raked up 3 wheelbarrows full out of that area.  I’m going to have to clear the ashes out of the fire pit again!

Clean Up, West fence line

After dropping my daughter off at work this morning (and a quick visit to the beach), I continued clearing the west fence line, working away from the fire pit area.

When I did my evening walk around the yard last night, there was still enough light to rake up the dead leaves and twigs where I had been working last time. It was not really something I’d intended to do yet, but I had issues last time that I wanted to check out.

This morning, with enough light to see, I checked it out.

20180809.cleanup.firepitarea.neargate.triphazards

Yikes!  No wonder I kept stubbing my toes, tripping and twisting.

I had cut those lilacs and caragana to as close to ground level as I could at the time.  I didn’t take into account the thickness of years of dead leaves.  Once raked out, I could see that I was no where near ground level on these!

Thankfully, I did not need to go over this area again today, because I didn’t want to use up what little time I had before the heat hit, cutting it down shorter.

This is the next section I worked on.

(Click on the images to see larger)

There’s one before picture, and two after pictures of the space around the two elms.

I did end up taking down some caragana and lilac growing together that I’d originally though I could leave.  You can see it to the right of the two elm trees in the before picture. However, to clear the fence line, they had to go.  Like so much else, there was a lot more dead in there than I expected.  Even after I’d already cut away dead sections, some time ago!

Here is how it looks now.

20180809.cleanup.westfenceline.2.after.lilac.caragana

I had no energy to cut it down closer to the ground than this.  By the time I’d got to this point, the heat was already getting to be an issue.

I also needed to clear it to get to the next section, which I had not expected to get to this morning.  Here are some before pictures.

The first two are around a bigger maple with three trunks.  The third picture is of some maple next to it.  All dead, it turned out.  When I grabbed the first piece, preparing to cut it, it just broke loose immediately!

Here is how it looks now.

Two of the three trunks in the bigger maple turned out to be dead.  I will take them down, the next time I’m working in the area.

On clearing away the smaller maple, I found the remains of an old, rotting stump under the leaves.  What I cleared away had been the suckers growing out of a maple that had been cut down long ago, that did not survive for very long.

The next section I will be working on will include that big willow in the background.

Of course, while clearing and cleaning, I found questionable things.

The first was…

20180809.cleanup.westfenceline.found.sock

A single sock, buried in the leaves.

When I first saw fabric, I figured it would be a painter’s glove, like the many I packed away from various places as we put my parents’ things in storage.  Nope.  A sock.  Just one.

Then there was the barbed wire.

20180809.cleanup.westfenceline.found.barbed.wire.1

The first being this rolled up wire on a fence post.  You can also see the end of the cable that extends from the gate post.  I can’t quite figure out why it’s there.  It doesn’t seem to be actually supporting anything.

Note the post itself.  It’s basically just a piece of tree someone cut to size and used as a fence post.  Untreated wood like this cannot last long.

Most of this fence seems to be made up of this sort of post. :-(

On the next post over, there was more barbed wire.

20180809.cleanup.westfenceline.found.barbed.wire.2

Just a length of barbed wire, with worn out twine at its end, dangling there.

I’ve left the lilacs and caragana growing through the fence at this point, to hold the fence up.  It’s no longer even attacked to some of the fence posts at the top anymore.

It wasn’t until I had cleared around the bigger maple that I realized what I was seeing.

20180809.cleanup.westfenceline.found.barbed.wire.3

Someone wrapped a loop of barbed wire around the trunk to hold up the fence post.

A temporary fix like this, I can understand.  But the whole point of temporary fixes is that they are… well… temporary.

That maple trunk is the one that’s still alive of the three trunks growing together.

I don’t think I was out much more than and hour, working on this, before I had to get out of the heat.  We’ve got heat wave warnings for the rest of the week, across the prairies.  As I write this, we’re at 31C (87.8F), with a humidex of 35C (95F).  It’s not expected to start cooling down for the evening until about 7pm.  At least we’re not supposed to go any higher, today.  By Saturday and Sunday, we’re expecting to get temperatures of 35C with a humidex of 41C (105.8F).

Ah, Canada.  Where the summers can get as much above freezing as the winters can get, below freezing! :-D

Morning on the lake

The lake was so very calm this morning!

20180809.beach.sun

I had the beach to myself, except for the seagulls and a woman doing yoga in the sand, while oriented to the sun.  The sand looked like it had just been groomed, too.

I found some pretty rocks while I was walking, including one larger one I might try painting on. :-)

It almost makes me want to be a morning person.

Almost.

Gzzzzzz……

Bribery will get you everywhere

We have had little success in getting the kittens more comfortable with us, though we have been able to touch the odd one.

This evening, we resorted to outright bribery.

Wet cat food.

It worked.  Kinda.

Beep Beep and her kittens were out, and we started off with a can of paté.  They quickly finished it off.

So I brought out a second can of chunks in gravy cat food.

I even found a broiler pan in the old garden shed to put the food on.

Why there was a broiler pan in the garden shed, I have no idea.  But I will leave it there to put the cat kibble on, instead of in the dirt, until the kittens start regularly coming around the other side of the house to the food bowls there.

My daughter was able to pet BOTH of Beep Beep’s babies!

20180808.kittens

Once their bellies were full enough, they were no longer willing to let my daughter pet them.  The tuxedo is a little more willing, but it will step back and hiss when touched.  The tabby just runs off.

They are getting so big. :-D

We won’t be able to keep this up, since canned cat food is so much more expensive, but I hope we’ll eventually get them associating us humans with good things, and that they will become more socialized.

Bog Princess

I have learned many things from my daughters.  They have very eclectic interests, and happily share them with me.

Sometimes, I get treated like a princess because of it, too.

Somewhere on the vastness of the internet (I have not been able to find a link), they read about a bog mummy that had an intricate twisted hair style.  Basically, it was the oldest known hair style in the world.  Those studying her apparently couldn’t figure it out.  Then photos were released and stylists said, “oh, this is how it was done.”

Since I am the only person with long enough hair in the household, I then got to be experimented on.

When heading into the city today to visit their grandpapa, my younger daughter was sweet enough to do my hair up like she read about, adding in a lovely peacock hair/shawl pin to make it look really special.

20180808.hair

I doubt the bog mummy was a princess, but I sure felt like one. :-)

When it hits the fan…

… the fan eventually gives out.

After some 40 years or so, our bathroom fan gave out.  Yesterday, our electrician friend came by to take a look.  I had asked him if he could install the fan my husband bought, and how much it would cost.

It turns out the motor for this fan is still manufactured.

So he took it out to take home and see what he could do with it.  It’s likely unfixable, but he would be in the city today and would look for a replacement motor, which would be much cheaper than having him install the new one.  I am expecting to hear from him some time tonight about that.

Meanwhile, this is how it looked.

20180807.fan.space

To be honest, I really expected it to be worse. :-D

I’ve since cleaned it out as much as I could, and washed the other parts and pieces.

20180807.fan.pieces

I figure, if he does find a new motor for it, this is probably going to be the only opportunity to clean all this out for… oh, who knows how many years!

It’ll be nice to have a fan again.  One that doesn’t scream when we turn it on, even. ;-)

Soon, I hope!

Power Mapping

Today, I spent some quality time with our breaker panel.

If all goes well, our electrician friend will stop by on his way home from his job in the city to look at our dead bathroom fan, and the one my husband bought to replace it.

Electricity Clipart 011511» Vector Clip Art - Free Clip ...

I am not sure we’ll be able to use it, because it is supposed to have heater lamps in it (the bulbs need to be purchased separately) and there might not be enough power load for that.  Plus, we would likely want to have a third switch installed so the fan can be operated without the heater lamps.  If it’s not appropriate for use, we’ll get another and save this one for when we get a second bathroom installed.

Now, the electricity in this place is quite inadequate to modern needs.  Not enough outlets, and it doesn’t take much to trip a breaker.  For example, we can’t have the coffee pot or tea kettle and the toaster going at the same time.

The breaker panel had not been labelled, so my older brother figured out which were which, as best he could, and printed out a list.  Some were pretty obvious.  When he had the new electric furnace installed, it got its own breaker.  Same with the drier when the entry was made into a laundry room.  Beyond that, he just turned things on and off and figured it out the best he could, printed out the list and put it up on the panel.  He even put it in a plastic sleeve, rather than affixing it directly to the panel, so we could add to it as we needed, since he wasn’t able to find everything.

Since we’re looking at getting electrical work done in the bathroom, I figured it would be good to know which breaker the light and fan switch plate is hooked up to.  I turned on the bathroom light, which I can see from the breaker panel, and checked the list.

Nothing was labelled for bathroom.

There’s one labelled “unknown”, so I tried that first.

It’s still unknown.

I then tried the one labelled Old Kitchen.

I then got an alarmed question from upstairs, asking why we lost power.

There is a breaker labelled “Upstairs”, but it turns out that’s just for the two newer outlets, which the girls’ computers are plugged into.  The old outlets, which their fan is plugged into, is on the same breaker as the Old Kitchen light.  Which means that, while my daughter was working on her computer, the fan turned off, and she thought we’d lost power until she realized her computer wasn’t affected. *phew*

Okay.

I then tried the one labelled Old Kitchen Plug.  That turned out to be the one our freezer is now plugged into.

Nope.  Not the bathroom.

Then I hear my printer restarting itself and my daughter is asking, why did we lose the internet?

Okay.  So the breaker labelled Old Kitchen Plug is also for my office.

We then shut down our computers (thankfully, my power bar protected my computer from being affected by the breaker being switched off).

I then started working my way through the other labels, trying to figure out which one would be the bathroom, testing different ones that seemed they might include the bathroom.  That included one labelled NW Freezer, which is the outlet in the old kitchen that our freezer used to be plugged into.  (At the time it was labelled, there were two freezers in there.)

Nothing.

Finally, I started trying the less logical ones, like one labelled for the basement, or the fridge, etc.  I even tried the one labelled Septic Pump.

Nothing.

Going through the list again, I found one I hadn’t tried yet.

Living Room TV.

The bathroom light turned off.

My daughter and I were just shaking our heads.  These rooms are about as opposite in the house as you can get.

In the process, I realized we don’t know which breaker the master bedroom is part of.  My husband was asleep, so we couldn’t check at the same time.

Also, while we do know about one outlet and light switch in the old part basement, we don’t know about any of the other switches and outlets in the rest of that basement, or the new part basement.  Plus, since we’ve got extension cords coming up from holes to the basement, there would be breakers hooked up to places in the basement that would affect power cords on the ground floor.

It is so strange.

The Old Kitchen has a light and two outlets, each on different breakers.  I now know one of those outlets is also on the same breaker as the office.  Or at least the two outlets.  The light wasn’t on at the time, so that might be on a different breaker.  Also, it’s one of the rooms with an extension cord coming up the floor, along with a TV cable (this became my dad’s bedroom as his mobility decreased, and a TV was set up for him to be able to watch from bed), which is likely on another breaker. What is sharing the breakers the other old kitchen outlet and the light are on?  I didn’t have the light on in the sun room to be able to tell which one it’s on, either.

We’re going to have to do more mapping in the future.

The old part of the house may not have had running water when I was a kid, but it did have electricity.  When the new part was added on, aside from the stove being on its own breaker, everything else would have just been extended from existing lines.

I would so love to get this place rewired, top to bottom, with each room on its own breaker.

But if we were going to start tearing out walls to do that, we’d be renovating the house from top to bottom at the same time.

It certainly needs it, but we’d have to win the lottery or something, first!

Until then, we’ll just have to keep trying to map things out and add to the list as we discover them!
