The things I’ve been finding

I’ll start with the things I found today. :-)

The first thing I found this morning was a Pump Shack kitten! After opening up the sun room to let the other kittens out and get some cat kibble, I turned to find him at the door, waiting to see if he could sneak past me for some food!

He never did come in while I was there, but after I put food out by the junk pile and pump shack, I came back to find him, with Junk Pile kitten and Rosencrantz (his mom), sharing food with Doom Guy and Keith.

We rarely see Rosencrantz these days, and we haven’t seen Guildenstern in ages. Same with Jim, Bobby and Rolando Moon. I hope they are okay, wherever they are.

While checking the yard for any fallen branches or damage, I found…

One of the tree mushrooms had fallen.

That thing is really big!

I looked around for the others I’d spotted a few days back; they are not only still there, but bigger than ever. All this rain is definitely mushroom weather!

The final find of the day was something my daughter had to point out to me, or I would have missed it entirely.

During the night, I kept hearing the kittens getting onto the dining table, where they are not allowed to be. In coming out to chase them off, they were usually already down, but I could see the cords from our ceiling fan swinging. They were getting on the table to try and play with them!

A friend of mine has had success with using aluminum foil to get her cats from doing where they are not supposed to, so I figured I’d give it a try, leaving sheets of them in front of each chair that they are using to get onto the table.

As you can see by the paw prints, it didn’t work!

Another find I made was a few days ago, during my rare times to the basement. I needed a washer of a particular size and hoped I could find one among the various drawers and cabinets down there.

I found this.

20190919.things.we.find.syringe

The old syringe my dad used to use to treat cattle. I remember it used to be stored in a case, together with needles of various sizes, but there is only the syringe, now. Check out the inner chamber, that would be sterilized and reused, again and again – as did the needles! They certainly don’t make them like this, anymore!

Interestingly, we found these just the next day.

I found them with my feet. These are the sorts of medicine bottles that would have been used with that syringe.

Knowing my brother was coming with some wheels to try on the old trailer frame in the hay yard by the barn, my daughter and I went to pull it out of the grass. It’s really heavy, so we were not going to be able to drag it out of the old hay yard, through the barn, and into the outer yard, as I’d hope we might be able to, but we didn’t want to just leave it in the grass again, either. Leaning against the barn were some old tires, so I dragged several out to put under the frame. While pulling out the first tire, I stepped on something that my foot slipped on, and found an old medicine bottle, half buried in the dirt. I moved it aside but when I came back for the next tire, I stepped on another one!

We took them into the barn. I don’t know what we’ll do with them, but I want to keep these! :-D

Slowing down, and cats, cats, cats!

With all the rain we’ve been having, life is starting to slow down on the home front lately. After the various trips made in the last while, we’ve got a couple of “days off” to just stay home.

It’s been either too wet or too windy to do the junk wood burning I had hoped to do, so there has been no progress there at all. While there are a number of things I want to do around the yard, they are not things that should be done in the rain. We’re supposed to warm up over the next few days, and even start approaching 30C by Tuesday, so I hope to get a chance to work on those.

Yesterday was a quiet day in which I got to spend some quality time with my hooks. My husband requested a pair of warm and cozy slippers for winter, so I picked up some blanket yarn while in the city for my medical appointment. I wanted to try something different, too, so I basically made up the pattern as I went along. I am very happy with how they turned out, so I plan to pick up more of the blanket yarn and do different sizes for myself and the girls.

We had rain all night and most of the morning, so it was pretty damp when I did my morning rounds.

The cats inside even seem to be feeling it. This is what I woke up to.

Critter of the Day: a story in pictures

Lately, Beep Beep has been very aggressive about wanting human attention.

She has very sharp claws!

After we made our trip to my medical appointment yesterday, the girls and I ended up going for a walk-about beyond the outer yard.

Beep Beep followed us.

Critter of the Day: just jogging (plus bonus mystery critter)

We haven’t been seeing deer much lately, though as fall approaches, we are starting to see them in the fields as we drive by again.

Once in a rare while, I will see on in the trail cam, going down our driveway and jumping the chain. I haven’t seen any since the gate got replaced.

Until I checked the files, yesterday.

The motion sensor was triggered by this lone deer, jogging down the road! :-D

I also saw something interesting flash by during the night.

What are you looking at?

I was sitting, facing the window, for several minutes before I realized my stuffed cat had company.

David isn’t much bigger than his plush buddy, and he was sitting there, perfectly still. :-D

It’s like he’s wondering what the stuffed cat is looking at so intently out there. :-D

Clean up: old dog houses moved

Brrr, today has turned out to be chilly!

With some help from my daughter, though, I was able to get a lot more done outside than I expected.

First on the list was to move the old dog houses to what I hope will be a permanent – or at least long term – location.

Unfortunately, things are really level in the area I wanted to put them. After discussing it a bit, we decided which space was the most level, then hoisted the dog houses over.

Bonus Critter: bald eagle!

While driving to town yesterday, we startled some birds. About 5 or 6 ravens burst out of the bullrushes in the ditch, along with some large raptor. We couldn’t see it well enough, but figured it was some type of eagle.

On the way home, as we neared the same location, out of the rushes burst a HUGE bald eagle. It flew into the trees nearby and settled onto a branch, watching as we drove by.

My guess is, there was something hidden in the ditch at this location that was being scavenged. So when I was driving home from dropping my daughter off this morning, and saw I was coming up on this spot, I was already slowing down. Just in case.

I was well rewarded!

Once again, a massive bald eagle burst out of the rushes, flew into the trees, and watched as I went by.

I stopped to get some photos, but the digital zoom on my phone’s camera is awful. This is the best I could get (I highlighted the eagle, since it was hard to pick out).

It’s hard to really get how big that bird is from the picture!
