An awesome Mother’s Day, pancake cat, soil comparisons and pretty things. :-)

I had a rather amusing start to the morning!

While heading out to feed the outside cats, I heard a noise from an unusual direction.

I had startled Nicky the Nose on the sun room roof!

I always get a giggle out of how he pancakes himself like that when he’s startled. As if he can somehow make himself small. :-D

Our cats never go on the sun room roof, that we’ve seen. They’ll go onto the new part roof, where they can look at the girls through the second floor windows, but it’s quite a leap to go onto the rest of the roof from there. It was a surprise to see Nicky there!

My daughters had a Mother’s Day treat planned out for me. In our tiny little hamlet, we have a small hotel with a bar and itty bitty restaurant. Well, with all the restrictions in place, they’ve had to change things up. About a month ago, the separate bar and restaurant was reworked as a single country style pub, and quickly got a good reputation for their excellent food. It’s a small menu for a small town, but we’re just excited to have options at all.

Of course, the government promptly pulled the rug out from under restaurants again, so they’re limited to take out, only. I guess the government isn’t done killing small businesses, yet. So we wanted to give them some support!

I saw them post a photo on their Facebook page for a platter that is not on their menu, so I had to ask about it. They were able to put together an appetizer platter for us, including deep fried mushrooms, which are also not on the menu yet. It was awesome! Even with 4 of us, by the time we were done, I could only manage one slice of the pizza I got for myself. My daughters ordered their cheeseburger platters, and were thoroughly impressed just by the size. There was enough there for two meals! And yes, they tasted really good, too! It’ll be much nicer to be able to order food from just a few miles away, instead of having to go to another town. Unless we want Chinese food. ;-) I’m glad we were able to order there today. Driving by over the past month, I was always seeing vehicles and people out front and, on nice days, people sitting and eating at the tables outside. Today, with the increased restrictions kicking in at midnight, there was nothing. Just two employees, and me, and I only heard the cook, but never saw him. So we’ll be trying to order food from there as often as our budget allows. Hopefully, lots of other people will be doing the same. Considering how few people live here, that still won’t be much, but it might be enough to keep them going.

In other things…

I had hung on to the soil samples from the tests done in them, and today I finally got some photos before getting rid of them. Here are the jars from the first two tests we did.

The first sample was from the soft soil uncovered when the old wood pile was cleaned up. The water is still very distinctly orange! The second sample is from the new garden soil we purchased.

These are from the third and fourth tests we did. The one that’s more orange and still cloudy is from where we’d planted potatoes using the Ruth Stout method, while the other is from the unamended soil that has never had anything planted there before. I find it interesting to see how clear – or not! – the water became, after letting the samples sit undisturbed for so long.

Later this afternoon, my daughters and I went out to do some watering, and to plant onion sets in the last of the beds in the old garden area. The 2 bags of shallots had only a dozen sets each, so they were planted in one row along one side, while the yellow onions were planted in a three row grid on the other. Later next week, kohlrabi will be planted in between the two. Besides that, there’s still half a bed left that will be planted with carrots. Aside from successive sowing the spinach, that will be it for those beds.

There were still maybe a dozen onion sets left over, so I’m thinking of interplanting them with the beets that will be planted near the garlic beds. Hopefully, they will help deter deer from going after the beet greens. If all goes well, that will be completed tomorrow.

Before heading back indoors and out of the high winds we were having, the girls and I checked on the flowers we’d planted in the fall.

We’re finding more and more of the teeny, tiny crocuses blooming! I know these are not large flowers, but I didn’t expect them to be this minuscule! I suspect, after they’ve had a year to establish themselves, they will come up a bit larger, next year.

I then spent some time tending the seed starts in the sun room. The gourd pots got moved to the sun room awhile ago, but there is still nothing of the Ozark Nest Egg, Thai Edible Bottle gourd, and birdhouse gourds. I am hoping it’s just because they take so long to germinate normally. I probably should have started them earlier. It’s the squash and melons that I’m eyeballing more. They haven’t been in the sun room long, but I was hoping the increased warmth would help. I’m happy to say that I did see a couple of seedlings trying to push their way through, but most show no sign of any germination. I keep second guessing myself about what we used to plant them in and all the things we did differently this year, thinking that maybe I’ve gone and killed them off somehow. :-/ It’s still just under a month before we can transplant anything outside, so there’s lots of time yet for them to germinate.

At least, that’s what I keep telling myself!

Oy. Today has been a really bad day for internet connectivity – as happens every time we have high winds. This post took forever to get done! Time to stop trying to do internet things for a while.

Hmm… I still have lots of my Mother’s Day pizza left. Maybe a late snack is in order? :-D

Ginger, Nutmeg and chives

I had some spicy company this morning!

Ginger was quite enjoying his morning stretches. :-)

He had been rolling and stretching next to me so enthusiastically, he rolled right off the edge of the bed. Whereupon he looked up at me, as if to say, “I meant to do that!”

His brother was also keen for attention this morning, even to the point of demanding face pets instead of scarfing down breakfast! He followed me around a bit while I was doing my rounds.

He decided to roll in the dirt next to the chives. :-D

If you look past him, you can see rhubarb coming up, too.

When we plant in this garden, we know not to plant around this particular tree. It’s one of their rolling spots. They don’t roll around under the other one, likely because this spot gets more sun. :-)

The brothers are very much alike in personalities! :-)

The Adventures of Ginger

Yesterday, Ginger discovered the joys of bedding being changed!

The cats tend to react two ways when the sheets get changed. About half the cats see what’s happening, and are all “YAY!!! IT’s party time!” and promptly make it very, very difficult to make the bed.

The others go into a panic and run away like the world is coming to an end.

Ginger, it turns out, is the party type.

There turned out to be three cats in this picture. :-D

Time to cover the freshly washed blanket in fur again!

Time to defend territory!

No worries about Beep Beep. Every now and then, she gets in a bad mood and goes after whatever cat happens to be nearby. Ginger handles himself just fine!

I should put the freshly washed blanket into the shelf, but I’ve discovered the cats love a folded up blanket on the corner of the bed, as a bed of their own. Ginger is no exception!

We’ve been closing the other cats out of this room at night, just so Ginger can get a break from the crowd and get some sleep on the good spots. ;-) The other cats are not happy with this. As I write this, there are currently 7 cats sprawled all over my bed! :-D As soon as I open the door in the morning, they all rush right in. Next thing I know, my bed is covered, they’re circling Ginger’s food and water bowls as if they didn’t have oodles of them elsewhere in the house, and take their turns using his litter box – also as if there weren’t several others on different floors available for them! LOL

As promised, here is a picture of David for Leenda. :-)

David is just as hefty as is brother, Keith, but looks like he should be all light and fluffy.

Well. He is fluffy… ;-)

Also, he has pants. Thick, fluffy pants. When he walks by, his tail is like a huge banner with wiggling pants below.

Which is a much better view than what all the short haired cats insist on giving us, every chance they get! :-D

Well now! I was hearing the sounds of a cat playing behind me as I wrote this, so I took a look. It’s Ginger, running around and batting a cat toy around! Yes, he’s found a way to run and bat at a toy with his one front leg, at the same time!

He has adapted so well, so quickly. :-)

I have awesome daughters!

When we moved out there to take care of the property for my mother, our adult daughters could have stayed behind. Instead, they chose to give up their jobs and move out to the sticks to help me in caring for their father, as well as the property. They gave up a lot, though considering what’s going on in the world right now, it turns out to have been the right decision on a level no one could have expected.

One of the things I love about them is their sense of humour. Especially when it comes to mundane things.

Like descaling the kettle.

Our well water is very high in iron and minerals, so it doesn’t take long for the bottom of the kettle to get thickly coated. I decided it was time to do the vinegar treatment. After scrubbing out as much as possible by hand, the kettle is half filled with a vinegar water mixture and brought to a boil. The mixture is left to sit until the water has cooled down to safely give it another scrub. Rinse and repeat. It had been way too long since we did this, so I planned to leave the vinegar to soak overnight.

With that in mind, when I started the process, I make a sticky note to leave on the counter for the other household members to know what was in the kettle.

I decided to get cute about it.

Did I mention our water is high in iron and minerals?

As the vinegar mixture came to a boil, the liquid turned a very nasty rusty-orange colour, and was completely opaque.

The girls came down to use the kitchen while it was in the cooling down stage.

They added to the note.

Too funny!!!

The daughter that added the hilarious doodle is having a birthday this month. We don’t tend to celebrate birthdays on the actual day, but prefer to do things for the birthday person throughout the months, so she got her gifts from my husband and I already.

Her younger sister has been spending the last several weeks working on a gift for her. Today, she finished it, and it is amazing!

Who doesn’t want an octopus for their birthday!

I just love the eyes!!!

Also, she made this completely herself, including the pattern.

She taught herself to sew about a year or two ago, and starting making plushies using patterns she could find for free online, as well as clothes for herself.

Me; I baked a cake from a box.

At least the icing was home made. :-D

In the pink

We are having some beautifully mild weather right now – the forecasts are still predicting we will hit a couple of degrees above freezing! (and I’m already seeing people “blame” it on climate change, as if we’ve never had warm Januaries before… *sigh*).

Our hard wired security camera is set to take a photo and email it to me when the motion sensor is triggered. With the infrared flash, that often means I wake up to a lot of pictures of precipitation. We had neither rain nor snow last night. Instead, this morning, I found a whole lot of very cloudy, out of focus pictures.

Yup. We had fog heavy enough to trigger the motion sensor last night!

I discovered something about the new trail cam. When the lens gets frosted over, we get this.

That is one heck of a pink! :-D

Even after the frost is brushed off the lens, there is a pink hue over everything.

The other cameras would go greyscale, or blue.

I find this unexpectedly cheering… and I don’t even like pink. :-D

Special delivery!

Look what I found this morning.

I had actually checked the tracking status last night, and was surprised to see it listed as delivered.

In the city.

It wasn’t visible from the security camera live feed, because…

… camouflage! :-D

At least the UPS driver found us! :-D Checking the trail cam video later, I saw him pull in, dash out the side of the van, slide the box under the gate, and dash off again.

So… among our projects for the summer is to build a person gate on the side of the main gate, and set up a box for deliveries. :-)

This is our new trail camera, to replace the one that’s gone funky and isn’t recording anything. It’s still trying to work – on some of the night videos on the other camera, I could see that the infrared flash was triggered, but there was nothing on the disk. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t

The new camera is up now, and I’ll be doing an unboxing post, next. :-)

Ceramic heating soaks…?

This morning, my daughter asked me if I’d read the packaging for the terrarium heater we got for the cat house.

I had not, so she read it to me, and I just have to share!

In case you can’t see or read the image for some reason, this is what is says, in “Engrish“.

Reptile Products
Heat Emitter

. The ceramic heating soaks is one kind of infrared source, has one kind of similar natural sunlight heat radiation.

. The radiator produces the long wave infrared heat radiation can effectively the warm reptilia animal.

. Has promoted in the rearing tray temperature.

. Infrared hot may penetrate the skin organization, expands the blood vessel, thepromotion blood circulation, the enhancement health and accelerates to be restored to health

. Can provide the quantity of heat for reptile, provides the heat source is nonluminous, the service is 10000 hours.

Surface temperature is too high.
do not directly touch during use

It sounds like it was put through Google translate or something! :-D I love it!

In thinking about putting this heater into the cathouse, I remembered we have something that will be useful.

We have a spare smoke detector.

I found it in the kitchen junk drawer, still in its package. We’ll test it to see if it works (it should, but I have no idea how long it’s been sitting in that drawer). We can then install it (or a new one, if it doesn’t work) in the cathouse. That will add some piece of mind for us, in the unlikely event something goes wrong with the heater.

Since we’re taking out the light source to do this, I’m thinking of getting an LED night light for in there, with a red or blue bulb that won’t affect their night vision. The light would be for us to see inside through the windows at night, and make sure it’s cats in there, and not a skunk! :-D

All aglow, and yard helper

The cat house we now have to provide the outside kitties shelter for the winter has power to it. There are two outlets inside, one of which has a light plugged into it. We’ve never been able to plug it in. The nearest source of power is in the old kitchen. We’ve got an extension cord going through the window that we use, but it wasn’t long enough to reach the cat house.

Yesterday, I was able to pick up a new outdoor 25ft extension cord.

It just barely reached!

But reach, it did!

The problem is, I’m not sure how much the cats will use it, all lit up like that. It’s a 100 watt bulb (under a protective, waterproof cover), so it will also help with warmth a little bit, but I am thinking we might want to find some way to create a shaded area more conducive to sleep.

As for warmth, we’ve been looking at different possibilities, but the biggest issue is one of safety. Most types of heaters would not do well enclosed in a small space full of flax straw and a bunch of cats that like to scratch and dig. My daughter, however, thought that maybe a terrarium heater might work. When clearing out the shelves in my mother’s old bedroom, I did find a red heat bulb for chicks, but it’s a 500 watt bulb. We could get a terrarium bulb in black or blue, that’s 100 or 150 watts – or a no-light ceramic heater that screws in like a light bulb. Like this. (not an affiliate link) I think that would be much safer than some of the warming mats we’ve been looking at.

In fact, I just interrupted writing this post to ask my husband to find a ceramic heater type on Amazon Prime to order. This is not something we would be able to find locally.

Solution found! :-) I think the cats will be much happier with that. Since the cat house has three windows in it, they will still have daylight, or even moonlight, rather than being blinded. We still have a couple of sheets of rigid insulation we can add to the walls or under the roof.

Maybe not the walls. They like to use it as scratching posts! :-D

Meanwhile, we still need to replace the skid under it. When we do, we can move the whole thing a little bit closer to the house, to give the new extension cord some slack. I’ll also be picking up one of those waterproof cord protector boxes, since it will definitely end up buried in snow at some point.

I left the cat house plugged in last night, to see if the cats would use it while lit up. When I came out this morning, I didn’t see any cats in it – though I did see cats on it! :-D Unfortunately, looking through the window, I did see that the cats have been pooping in a corner. *sigh* That didn’t take long! :-(

This little baby looks ready to help me with the yard work!

She was actually hunting leaves blown around by the wind. :-D

I was actually able to pet her, Rosencrantz AND her brother this morning, while feeding them!

I’ve been calling this one Little Braveheart, but the girls have named her Tissue, because she looks like tissue paper blowing in the wind as she runs across the yard.

What do you thing? Braveheart or Tissue?

I’ve been calling her brother the oh-so-original “Tabby”, but the girls have been calling him Nostril, because he had one black nostril. I was telling my husband this, and he immediately went to “Nostril-damus.”

I think we have a winner! :-D

The kittens disapprove

Butterscotch’s kittens disapprove of me.

Or maybe they disapprove of the dropping temperatures!

Especially this one.

We get quite the giggle over how all four of Butterscotch’s kittens – including the camera shy calico – have these matching expressions!

Scene of the cat crime

There are areas around the house that we do and do not allow the cats. For example, they are not allowed on the kitchen counter the sink it in, nor where counters were food is prepared, but there is one small counter by the window they are allowed on, so they can sit and look out the window.

The dining table is another place the are not allowed.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to enforce this when we’re asleep.

This is what I found this morning.

The bowl of carrots and potatoes were scrubbed last night, to be cooked today. The cucamelons are kept out for snacking.

It turns out the cats like to drag off the carrots.

Shortly after I took this photo, I spotted Saffron running by behind me.

Then she dropped a pilfered cucamelon she had been carrying, and started batting it around.

Nasty cat criminals! :-D
