Bonus Critter: watch out!

My daughter removed this from the sun room.

This is a Bald Faced Hornet.

Which isn’t actually a hornet, but a type of Yellow Jacket Wasp.

Our Chinese Elm are just buzzing with these guys. Typically, they are high up and, if we leave them alone, they’ll leave us alone.

One got into the sun room and was busily giving itself a concussion on one of the windows when my daughter first saw it, as the girls were putting the kittens into the sun room for the night.

Unfortunately, the kittens immediately started going for it.

Since she didn’t want a stung kitten, she got it out using a glass and a piece of paper. After very carefully putting the glass on the step near one of the Chinese Elm and removing the paper, she figured it would leave.

Apparently, it was thoroughly stunned from bashing itself against the window for so long, and took its time exploring the inside and outside of the glass. Which allowed me to get this photo.

Thankfully, it soon disappeared.

They seem to be attracted only to the Chinese Elm, not the other types of elm that are around.

Another reason to eventually take those trees down. Along with everything else he has to deal with, my husband is allergic to stings.

Clean up: the old wood pile – a bit of progress

It’s been a while, but I managed to get a bit of progress on cleaning up the old wood pile.

This is almost how it looked when I left off last time.

I didn’t realize I’d neglected taking a picture after we shifted the doghouse aside and I took away the pallet it was on.

Today, I started digging and pulling up what I could of the rotted out pallets.

On a more positive note

While doing my rounds last night, I found Junk Pile Kitten at the stack of maple wood behind the house, playing with other kittens.

He let me play with him!

At a distance, of course.

This photo was taken yesterday morning.

I had let the kittens out early, since my husband and I were heading out to get our lab work done as early as we could, so I could put an end to my 12 hour fast. As I went to bring the van over to the house, I found kittens watching over me. Literally! LOL

These kittens bring such joy to our lives.

It’s been a few days

I haven’t made a solid post in a while, so it’s time to catch up on things.

The short version is pretty simple.

I’m tired.

So tired.

Which is actually one of the reasons I bit the bullet and saw the doctor a few days ago.

Making mead, part 4: transferring for second fermentation

We’re back to making Meeeeeead, Baby!

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

We are actually a bit late on this. After 10 days in the fermentation bucket, when we should have started sanitizing things and transferring the must to the carboy, we were instead dealing with hot water tank problems.

Pretty sure it’ll be fine. ;-)

Unexpected Finds

So… it’s been interesting lately.

While moving the chimney blocks from their stacks to where the retaining wall is going to be, we found an old aftershave bottle. My daughter did some research, and estimates that it’s from the 1980’s.

It turns out there are collectors for these out there! *L*

So she gave it a good washing, including trying to clean the inside.

See that stuff in the sink in the back ground?

Some manual labour, and getting things started

After dropping one daughter off at work, my other daughter and I did a whole bunch of manual labour around the yard.

The first thing we did was haul away the stuff I’d clean up in the old wood pile area, including moving the pile of debris to the back of the outhouse, and sorting through the pile of found objects and garbage.

We have a trailer… sortof

Yesterday, being Sunday, my daughter had a short shift and I was planning to stay in town again. I ended up meeting with my older brother and his wife, and we were able to spend a couple of wonderful hours together.

They are such great people!

At one point, we got to talking about how useful it would be for us to have a trailer, and how expensive new ones are. Apparently, there had been a small trailer by the garage, but it disappeared before we moved here.

Then they remembered.

We do still have a trailer.

Sort of.

They told me where it was, so when I did my evening rounds before it got dark, I went looking for it.

There it is!

Night Time Visitors

My daughter and I headed out last night to close the cats up in the sun room (the 6 remaining kittens, Beep Beep and, lately, Doom Guy).

The first thing we saw was a skunk running off towards to storage house.

Which meant there could be…

… yup…

A second one was inside the sun room, eating cat kibble.

It took a while to convince this one to come out.

They both ended up under the storage house. I find myself wondering if they’ve got a “nest” under there or something.

I’m just sort of assuming that these are the same pair we saw before.

Gosh, they’re cute.

Clean up: old wood pile, progress

I was able to get about an hour of clean up in the old wood pile area. I made sure to check the temperature before I headed out, and it was only 22C. Thank God it wasn’t any hotter, because even that felt way too hot.

Y’know, I’ve always wanted to travel, and go vacation on some tropical island. I still want to do that, but I am realizing that I’d just die in the heat! :-D

So this is where I left off, yesterday.
