A Good Day – and critters!

Before I go into today’s events, I wanted to share this photo from a few days back.

2018-10-robinsI had been watching the birds at the feeder and noticed some much bigger birds under the apple tree.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many robins, all together (there were several more that I was unable to get in a photo) .  I also didn’t know robins like to eat crab apples!

Between the birds and the deer, any fallen apples get cleaned up, real quick!

Today was my day to drive my mother to her follow up appointment with her surgeon.  I’m getting slightly more used to driving her little car instead of our roomy van. :-D

I did go in early to make a quick stop at the RCMP to file a report on the vandalism.  There’s nothing they can do about it, but at least there will be official documentation.  That went very quickly, so I was able to get a good hour’s visit in with my mother before we had to head out.

The appointment went very well.  My older brother was already there and waiting for us, and we were all able to go in together.  We found out that the surgeon found it a difficult surgery, which had not come up before.  My mother, however, was doing much better than he expected.  I am not surprised.  She is a very resilient woman!  Unless something weird happens, she should not have to see him about it again.

This was the first time I actually met the surgeon.  Nice guy. :-)

My mother won’t need to go back but, next week, I’ll be back at the same clinic to see a different doctor with my husband, to go over some test results.  No idea what to expect, there!

After the appointment, my mother, brother and I went out for a light lunch and to just chat.  I always enjoy spending time with my brother, and was glad we could take the time to do it.

While I was away, a deer that visited us before came by, and my older daughter was able to get a whole bunch of excellent photos.  Here are a couple of them.

She first spotted him through the spruces – last winter, we would barely have been able to see him at all, through the low hanging branches.  I’m quite happy with the increased visibility, after the pruning was done!

The deer made its way over to the one apple tree that still has lots of crab apples on it – the same one that the robins were enjoying the fruits of.

The deer ended up coming closer, but I will post those pictures over the next couple of days. :-)

We have acquired a trail cam to record our front gate; a temporary measure, until we can get a full surveillance system.  When that is done, I’d like to set it up by the house to record the feeding area.  It should be interesting to see what it picks up.  Especially at night. :-)

That snow on the ground is gone already.  We’re supposed to warm up, and even hit about 12 or 13C by Thursday.  One last day to finish up around the yard, before we’re done for the winter. :-)  There may be more warmer days later, but I’m not going to count on that.

Hard to believe we are entering our second winter here.  In less than 2 weeks, it’ll be a year since my husband and younger daughter arrived.  It’ll be a year for my older daughter and I, in the middle of November.

It’s been quite an adventure, that’s for sure!

I try to make a point of telling her that. She’s never gone though anything this major, and I think her expectations were a little off as so how quick recovery would be. At 87, she’s recovering faster than people half her age! Probably faster than me, when I had my laparoscopy 8 years ago, which wasn’t anywhere near as invasive as hers!
